A union-level BNP leader shot dead in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna district on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Biru Molla, 60, son of late Abul Molla and convener of Luxmikunda union unit of  BNP. Victim’s son Rajib Molla said, on Tuesday night local Awami League Zahurul Molla, also cousin of Biru Mollah, along with his son Al Amin Molla, forcibly cut soil from Biru Molla’s land for use in a brick kiln. When Biru Molla went to ask Zahurul Molla about the soil cutting at around 9:15 am on Wednesday, Zahurul and his son Al Amin became enraged and immediately shot Biru Molla in the head with an illegal firearm. Biru Molla collapsed on the spot and was rushed by locals to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty physician, Dr Tasnim Tamanna Swarna, declared him dead. Former Ishwardi upazila BNP member secretary Ajmal Hossain Sujon said those responsible for killing his party leader must be brought to justice immediately. 2 youths die after consuming alcohol in Pabna “This is not a party issue. Deceased Biru Molla was the first cousin of the accused Zahurul Molla. The incident occurred over soil cutting,” he added. Mominuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station, said that necessary legal action would be taken following investigation. “As of 3:30 pm on Wednesday no case had been filed,” the OC added.    

The Election Commission (EC) has called for equal opportunities for all candidates in election coverage on Bangladesh Television and private TV channels. Creating a congenial environment is crucial for free, fair, and credible elections, said an EC statement signed by Md Ruhul Amin Mollick, director (public relations) of the organization, on Wednesday.  State and private media can play a key role by providing equal access to information for all candidates, ensuring balanced coverage during election-related programs, interviews, talk shows, and dialogues, the statement reads. Referring to rule 25 of the Political Party and Candidate Code of Conduct-2025, the statement highlighted that candidates or their representatives may participate in televised election dialogues but must refrain from making personal attacks against anyone. All television channels and other media outlets have been requested to exercise caution, provide equal opportunities to all candidates and avoid broadcasting any remarks or statements that demean or disparage any party or candidate, said the statement.  

Vehicular movement on the Rampura–Natun Bazar road resumed on Wednesday evening after a two-hour blockade enforced by July Oikya, demanding the return of those allegedly involved in an attempt to kill Osman Hadi, spokesman of Inquilab Moncho. July Oikya activists blocked the Rampura-Badda road in the afternoon, marching towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to press their demand for the extradition of the suspects. After keeping the road blocked for nearly two hours, the organisation announced the end to its programme. Earlier, at around 3pm, a procession led by Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair started from Rampura Bridge and advanced towards North Badda. The demonstrators later staged a sit-in on the road in front of Hossain Market in North Badda after facing police resistance, chanting slogans such as ‘Delhi or Dhaka, Dhaka is Dhaka’ and ‘Why was my brother Hadi attacked?’ Addressing the gathering, Zubair said they had no intention of advancing further with the procession and only wanted to convey that no one would be allowed to impose dominance over Bangladesh. “There is no fear. We will not attack the Indian High Commission. Our protest is a non-violent one. But if anyone tries to maintain hegemony over Bangladesh, they will not be spared,” he said. Due to the blockade, severe traffic congestion gripped the entire area. With police barricades on both sides of the road and protesters occupying one side, all types of vehicles remained halted from Natun Bazar to Rampura for nearly two hours. July Oikya blocks Rampura-Badda road over Hadi attack attempt Vehicular movement on the Gulshan–Badda link road was also suspended during the blockade, causing immense suffering to commuters. At around 5pm, July Oikya announced the end of its programme. The protesters warned of tougher movements ahead if the alleged attackers of Hadi are not brought back. Although traffic resumed on the Rampura-Natun Bazar road after police removed the barricades, heavy congestion persisted across the area due to pressure from stranded vehicles.    

BNP senior leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan on Wednesday said Bangladesh cannot afford to return to a fascist path again in the future. “We don’t want Bangladesh to be known again in the world as a fascist state. We want to build a humane Bangladesh,” he said. The BNP leader made the remarks while speaking at a discussion organised by the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) at the Jatiya Press Club. Dr Moyeen, a BNP Standing Committee member, said Bangladesh is now one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and by 2050 Dhaka is expected to become the most crowded large city. “How we will run such a city is a matter to think about. Though we are not economically strong yet, we are surviving on an informal economy. Those who will run the country in future must work on these issues,” he said. The BNP leader said the Awami League, instead of serving the people, created a system of self-serving power groups, which he termed an “oligarchic structure.” “As a result, the poor have become poorer,” he observed. The BNP leader said even after 54 years of independence, the nation is still searching for democracy. “For democracy the people fought the Liberation War in 1971. They fought for economic rights and dignity. Those who led the country in the past and those who are leading now must answer why they failed,” he said. Tough days ahead as conspiracies persist, warns Tarique Rahman Dr Moyeen said every authoritarian ruler in Bangladesh faced resistance whenever they tried to take away freedom of speech. “Modern state systems can be cruel because they make people numb and ignore human feelings. Those who come to power in future must make this clear,” he said. DAB President Prof Dr Harun Al Rashid chaired the discussion, which was attended by BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council members Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Prof Dr Forhad Halim Dona, and DAB Secretary General Dr Md Zahidul Islam Shakil and others.      

July Oikya on Wednesday blocked the Rampura-Badda road while marching to encircle the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, demanding the extradition of those allegedly involved in the attempted killing of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson and prospective independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency, Osman Hadi. The march, led by Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Social Welfare Secretary AB Zubair, started from Rampura Bridge around 3:00 pm and advanced towards North Badda. However, facing police resistance, the demonstrators sat on the road in front of Hossain Market in North Badda, chanting slogans such as ‘Delhi or Dhaka, Dhaka is Dhaka’ and ‘My brother Hadi—why did Hadi have to die?’ Addressing the protesters, Zubair said they had no intention of moving further with the procession and only wanted to send a message that no one would be allowed to impose dominance over Bangladesh at will. “We are not afraid, and we will not attack the Indian High Commission. Our protest is a peaceful one. But if anyone tries to maintain hegemonic control over Bangladesh, they will not be spared,” he said. The blockade triggered severe traffic congestion across the area, as police barricades were placed on both sides of the road and protesters occupied one side, halting all vehicular movement from Natun Bazar to Rampura.

The European Union (EU) will send 175-200 observers to monitor the upcoming parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter, scheduled to be held on February 12, 2026, said EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Wednesday. “The EU has confirmed that it will deploy an observer mission in our election….Some 175-200 EU observers will arrive here at different times to observe the polls,” he said while briefing reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city. Ivars Ijabs, a member of the EU Parliament, would lead the EU election observation mission in Bangladesh, he said. The EC Secretary, however, said he would not be able to say further details about when they start arriving here. He said the EU observers would come here to watch the election following a tripartite agreement signed among the Election Commission, the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh and the EU on Monday last. Akhtar Ahmed said the EU observers would follow the local necessity protocols particularly in the Chittagong hilly area. He said so far two-three international organisations and countries confirmed that they would send their observer missions to Bangladesh. In response to a formal invitation by Bangladesh authorities, the High Representative/Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas has decided to deploy an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to observe the parliamentary elections scheduled for 12 February 2026.  The High Representative has appointed Ivars Ijabs, Member of the European Parliament, as its chief observer.  "I am honoured to lead this EU Election Observation Mission to Bangladesh, which will deliver an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process," Chief Observer Ijabs said on Tuesday.  This mission, Ijabs said, is a tangible example of the EU support to the people of Bangladesh and their aspiration for stronger democratic institutions, the rule of law and human rights. The EU said they are supporting the conduct of "free and fair, participatory" elections. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on December 11 last announced the schedule to arrange the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order simultaneously on February 12 next. According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination paper is December 29, while the scrutiny of nomination paper is on December 30-January 4 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is January 20. The election campaign will start on January 22 and continue till 48 hours before the balloting period (7:30am on February 10).

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has intensified security through setting up more check posts in the capital on Wednesday to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. The checkposts will be operational from 4:00pm at several strategic locations under different crime divisions of the DMP, said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman on Wednesday afternoon. The areas include Bosila under Ramna Division; Babubazar under Lalbagh Division; Postogola Bridge, Matuail U-loop and Staff Quarter under Wari Division; Basabo Road (Kamalapur) under Motijheel Division; Gabtoli under Mirpur Division; 300 Feet Road under Gulshan Division; and Abdullahpur Bridge, Kamarpara and Dhaur Bridge under Uttara Division. DMP intensifies drive to arrest attackers of Hadi Law enforcement officials said the checkposts will focus on monitoring suspicious movements, verifying vehicles and individuals, and preventing any untoward incidents. The DMP has urged city residents to cooperate with police personnel during the checkpost operations in the greater interest of public safety and security.  

The Finance Division on Wednesday unveiled the third Public Financial Management (PFM) Reform Strategy 2025–2030, signaling a decisive shift in Bangladesh’s fiscal governance by widening the focus toward building institutional strength, accountability, and improved service delivery. Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed formally launched it at a ceremony organised by Strengthening Public Financial Management Program to Enable Service Delivery (SPFMS) at the multipurpose hall of the Finance Division in the capital. The new framework provides a comprehensive roadmap to strengthen fiscal discipline, manage rising public risks, and ensure better value for money at a time when Bangladesh faces mounting pressure from climate change, global economic volatility, and expanding public expenditure needs. Addressing the event adviser Salehuddin said, “We are accountable to the general public and this long-awaited PFM Strategy is about ensuring transparency, accountability, and better quality of public services.” He called upon officials of the Finance Division, the National Board of Revenue (NBR), the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (OCAG), and other relevant actors to accelerate implementation of the strategy, stressing that coordinated action is essential to establish a stronger system of governance and a more transparent public financial system that delivers real benefits to citizens. Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder presided over the event, while Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Md Nurul Islam and World Bank Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Jean Pesme attended as special guests. Dr Ziaul Abedin, Additional Secretary (Budget-1) and National Program Director of SPFMS, delivered the welcome address, and Suraiya Zannath, Lead Governance Specialist at the World Bank, also spoke on the occasion. The finance secretary said, “The PFM Reform Strategy 2025–2030 is the result of sustained and collaborative efforts by many dedicated stakeholders over a long period. I sincerely acknowledge the contributions of officials of the Finance Division, line ministries, constitutional bodies, development partners, and technical experts who worked relentlessly to shape this comprehensive and forward-looking strategy.” Comptroller and Auditor General Md Nurul Islam said, “The PFM reform journey is fundamentally about attaining fiscal discipline, modernising financial processes, and strengthening financial governance to deliver more efficient, transparent, and citizen-focused public financial services. I firmly believe that a strong PFM system, supported by a strong and independent audit mechanism, is essential to ensuring the success of the reform agenda.” Finance Division rolls out SABRE+ to boost transparency in public sector World Bank Division Director Jean Pesme said Bangladesh has made notable progress through reforms such as iBAS++ and the digitalisation of pension systems which have strengthened credibility, oversight, and transparency in the use of public resources. The 2025–2030 framework is structured around 15 reform pillars covering fiscal sustainability, revenue mobilisation, public investment management, treasury and debt management, procurement, internal and external oversight, digital transformation, and capacity building. For the first time, the strategy fully mainstreams climate-smart PFM, gender-responsive budgeting, and sector-specific financial management reforms for health, education, and social protection. Resilience is a central theme of the strategy. With Bangladesh’s tax-to-GDP ratio among the lowest in the region and fiscal exposure increasing through SOE liabilities and contingent risks, the document places strong emphasis on improved macro-fiscal forecasting, integrated debt management, and transparent reporting of fiscal risks. The strategy also emphasises institutionalisation and implementation, noting that the success of the next reform phase will depend on sustained political commitment, stronger coordination across agencies, and continued investment in public sector capacity. As Bangladesh moves toward upper-middle-income status, the new PFM Reform Strategy positions public finance not merely as a technical function, but as a cornerstone of economic governance, equity, and public trust.  

Nearly a year after a devastating fire ripped through the Bangladesh Secretariat, destroying vital documents, the government has decided to undertake a major modernisation project to strengthen fire safety and ensure uninterrupted power supply at the Secretariat and other key government installations. The project, titled “Modernisation of Existing Electrical-Mechanical and Fire Safety Equipment to Ensure Fire Safety at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Transport Pool, Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence,” will be implemented by the Public Works Department under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. With an estimated cost of Tk 112.87 crore, the project will be fully financed through government funds. Its implementation period has been fixed from January 2026 to December 2027. The project will cover the Bangladesh Secretariat, the Ministers’ Apartment at Bailey Road, the Secretary’s Residence at Eskaton and the Transport Pool area under Dhaka South City Corporation. According to the project document, the main objectives are to ensure a sustainable and uninterrupted electricity supply and to establish a fire-safe working environment at these key government installations. As part of the project, outdated electrical substations at Secretariat buildings No-3, 4, 7 and 8, along with the RMU building, will be replaced and modernised.  Modern fire-fighting systems will be installed at Secretariat buildings No-2 to 11, the Transport Pool, the Ministers’ Apartment and the Secretary’s Residence. Fire at Bangladesh Secretariat building brought under control after six hours The project also includes replacement and modernisation of the generator at Secretariat building No-7, installation of ELT cables and other ancillary works. Service cables at buildings No-3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 and the Transport Pool will be upgraded to meet increasing power demand. Old lifts at Secretariat buildings No-4 and 6 will be replaced, while fire lifts will be installed at the Ministers’ Apartment and the Secretary’s Residence. Lightning protection systems will be modernised at Secretariat buildings No-2 to 11 and the Transport Pool. Public address (PA) systems will be supplied and installed at Secretariat buildings No-2 to 11, the 20-storey building and the Transport Pool. The project further includes installation of cable ladders at buildings No-4, 6 and 7, laying of HT express lines from the GIS station to various substations, modernisation of HVAC systems at the Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence, and construction of water reservoirs for pump houses and fire hydrants at the Bangladesh Secretariat and Ministers’ Apartment. Steel foot-over bridges will be constructed between buildings No-5 and 6 and between buildings No-6 and 7. To facilitate the installation of fire lifts, steel lift cores with curtain walls and other related works will be undertaken at the Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence. Officials said Bangladesh Secretariat currently comprises 10 buildings, eight of which were constructed before independence.  Over the years, the creation of new ministries and divisions and the expansion of existing ones have significantly increased manpower, resulting in higher electricity demand and added pressure on outdated electrical and mechanical systems. They added that existing systems at the Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence are old, costly to maintain and inadequate from a fire safety perspective, while the absence of fire lifts in multi-storey buildings has further increased risks. The Planning Commission, in its recommendation, said the project would play a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply and creating a fire-safe working environment at the Secretariat, Transport Pool, Ministers’ Apartment and Secretary’s Residence once implemented. In December 2024, a devastating fire gutted four floors of a building at the Bangladesh Secretariat, destroying crucial files, documents, computers, furniture and other equipment belonging to six divisions under five ministries. The blaze also caused extensive damage to the building’s walls and floors. The affected offices included the Road Transport and Highways Division, two divisions of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, the Posts and Telecommunications Division, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Fire at Bangladesh Secretariat sparks concerns of sabotage After nearly 10 hours of strenuous efforts by 19 firefighting units, the fire was finally brought under control.  During the operation, a firefighter was killed after being run over by a truck while setting up hose pipes in the early hours.  

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami central leader and Dhaka south Ameer Md Nurul Islam Bulbul collected his nomination paper for Chapainawabganj-3 (Sadar) constituency on Wednesday. He collected the paper from the office of the district returning officer at noon. A fire that broke out at a plastic product-manufacturing factory in Islambagh area in Dhaka has been brought under control. Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell, said the fire originated from a factory in Chairmangaht area of Islambagh at around 1:30pm and quickly spread. Keraniganj building fire under control; 45 rescued On information, 11 firefighting units from several fire stations, including Lalbagh, Hazaribagh and Palashi rushed to the scene at around 1:50pm and brought the blaze under control at 4pm. The cause of the fire could not be known yet, the official said.  

Amid fresh tensions in relations between two neighbours, India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday (December 17, 2025) summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah and briefed him on the activities of certain extremist elements who have reportedly announced plans to create a security situation around Indian territory. High Commissioner Hamidullah was apprised of India's strong concerns at the deteriorating security environment in Bangladesh. His attention was drawn, in particular, to the activities of some extremist elements who have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission in Dhaka. "India completely rejects the false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh," the MEA said in a media release following the summon. India said it has close and friendly relations with the people of Bangladesh rooted in the liberation struggle, and strengthened through various developmental and people-to-people initiatives. "We are in favour of peace and stability in Bangladesh and have consistently called for free, fair, inclusive and credible elections, conducted in a peaceful atmosphere," India reiterated. India said they expect the interim government to ensure the safety of Missions and Posts in Bangladesh in keeping with its diplomatic obligations. Visa Centre in Dhaka Closed In view of the ongoing security situation, the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka was close at 2:00 pm on Wednesday. "In view of the on-going security situation, we wish to bring to your kind notice that IVAC JFP Dhaka will be closed at 2 PM today," said a notification issued by the IVAC in Dhaka. The Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park (JFP) in Dhaka is the main, integrated center for all Indian visa services in the capital. Delhi's Cooperation South Bangladesh Sunday sought India’s cooperation in preventing the escape to India of the suspects involved in the recent attempted assassination of Bangladeshi political leader Sharif Osman Hadi and, in case they manage to enter into Indian territory, to ensure their immediate apprehension and extradition to Bangladesh. Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam summoned High Commissioner Pranay Verma at State Guest House Padma and emphasised that as a neighbour, India is expected to stand with the people of Bangladesh in upholding justice and safeguarding democratic processes. The High Commissioner of India emphasised that India looked forward to peaceful elections in Bangladesh and expressed his country’s readiness to extend all cooperation in this regard. Police have already identified the attackers and their associates in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson of the Inquilab Moncho and a potential independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency. Intensive operations by law enforcement agencies are continuing to arrest them, said the interim government. To prevent the main suspect from crossing the border, photos and other information of the suspects were provided to all immigration check posts on Friday night. Patrols of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and RAB have been intensified in the border area. Although the location of the suspects has been identified several times within the country, it has not been possible to arrest them yet due to their repeated changes of location, the government said. Hasina’s Extradition The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed the government of Bangladesh’s serious concern to the government of India over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The ministry expressed its objection over India allowing fugitive Sheikh Hasina to continue making incendiary statements, urging her supporters to engage in ‘terrorist’ activities in Bangladesh with the aim of disrupting the upcoming national election. Bangladesh reiterated her call for the expeditious extradition of Sheikh Hasina and former minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to face the sentences handed down by the judicial authorities in Bangladesh. The Indian government was called upon to expeditiously act to end the criminal actions by these fascist terrorists and extradite them to Bangladesh as soon as possible, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Highlighting the importance of safer, fairer and skilled migration, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said the submission of fake documents has emerged as a major barrier to sending people abroad, despite the huge opportunities offered by destination countries for Bangladeshis. “Bangladesh has become quite famous globally for the submission of fake documents,” he said, noting that the country continues to face the same complaints from receiving nations, regardless of the destination. Prof Yunus cited an example raised by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to illustrate the severity of the problem. He said the migration system is heavily dominated by brokers and syndicates, where the government’s role remains limited. Prof Yunus also warned that the widespread use of fake documents is leading to the closure of doors for Bangladeshi workers seeking employment abroad. The Chief Adviser was speaking at a function in the city marking the International Migration and National Expatriates Day. Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul was, among others, present. International Migrants Day (IMD) is observed on 18 December, reaffirming the need for safer, more inclusive, and fairer migration systems in a rapidly changing world. Despite its proven benefits, migration remains poorly understood, and systems often lack the investments, partnerships, and evidence needed to respond to today’s realities. This year’s theme, ‘My Great Story: Cultures and Development’, highlights how human mobility drives growth, enriches societies, and helps communities connect, adapt, and support one another. In 2025, this message is more urgent than ever as migration continues to shape economies, communities, and global development. Migration is a defining force of the century. Remittances to low- and middle-income countries are projected to reach a record USD 685 billion, and migrants are central to addressing labour shortages, driving innovation, and supporting demographic stability.  Yet these contributions can only be maximized when migration is safe, orderly, and responsibly governed. Well-managed migration is a strategic asset: it strengthens resilience, fuels prosperity, and supports social cohesion, IOM said. From documentation and skills recognition to integration and dignified return, effective systems ensure migrants can find stability, support their families, and build new futures, while helping communities adapt and thrive. The 15 people killed in Sunday’s deadly shooting at a Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach included a 10 year old child, an 87 year old Holocaust survivor, community volunteers, religious figures and bystanders who tried to stop the attackers, according to information released by families and community groups. Australian authorities have described the attack, carried out by two gunmen during a public celebration, as antisemitic terrorism inspired by the Islamic State group. Among the victims was Matilda, a 10 year old girl whose family asked that her surname not be published. Her teacher described her as gentle and compassionate, saying she was known for seeing kindness in others. Boris Gurman, 69, and his wife Sofia Gurman, 61, were also killed. Family members said the couple, married for nearly 35 years, were shot while trying to intervene and stop one of the attackers shortly after the violence began. Eli Schlanger, 41, the assistant rabbi at Chabad Lubavitch of Bondi, was another victim. He helped organise the Hanukkah event and was also known for his work as a prison and hospital chaplain in New South Wales. Schlanger was a father of five. Yaakov Levitan, 39, a rabbi and father of four, was described by the Chabad movement as a key figure in Sydney’s Jewish community, working largely behind the scenes in community service and administration. Marika Pogany, 82, was a longtime volunteer who delivered kosher meals to elderly and vulnerable people. Jewish community organisations said she had spent decades supporting those in need. Dan Elkayam, 27, a French national living in Sydney, was remembered by family and his football club as a talented soccer player and a kind person who was well liked by teammates and friends. Peter Meagher, a retired police officer, was working as a freelance photographer at the event. A rugby club where he volunteered described him as a respected figure who was killed while carrying out his work. Reuven Morrison, 62, was killed while attempting to stop one of the gunmen, according to his family. He had migrated to Australia decades earlier after facing antisemitism in the former Soviet Union. Alex Kleytman, 87, a Holocaust survivor who later settled in Australia, was also among the dead. His wife said he died while trying to protect her during the attack. Another victim, Tibor Weitzen, 78, a grandfather who migrated to Australia in the late 1980s, was remembered by family members as deeply devoted to his children and grandchildren. Authorities continue to investigate the attack as funerals and memorials for the victims begin across Sydney.

The Election Commission (EC) has instructed the relevant authorities to send SMS alerts to all government officials and employees, encouraging them to register for voting through postal ballots ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election and the referendum on the July Charter. The instruction was given in a letter signed on Wednesday (December 17) by KM Ali Newaz, Additional Secretary of the Election Commission and Project Director of the OCV–SDI project. According to the letter, government officials and employees working inside the country, as well as officers and employees of the armed forces who receive salaries through the iBAS++ system, will be able to cast their votes through an IT-supported postal ballot after completing registration via the “Postal Vote BD” app. The registration process will remain open until December 25, 2025, the letter said. The EC has instructed the authorities concerned to send SMS messages to all military and civilian government officials and employees who are drawing salaries through the iBAS++ system, requesting them to complete their registration through the app by the stipulated deadline. The SMS text will be “All government officials and employees (military and civilian) are requested to complete registration through the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app by December 25, 2025, to cast votes through IT-supported postal ballots.” The Commission said postal ballots will be sent by mail to the registered voters’ addresses. After casting their votes, voters will have to return the ballots in the provided return envelopes to the respective returning officers. Though the postal balloting system has been in the laws for a long time, it was never practised in the previous elections. Among them, the probable polling personnel who are not in the government services, and the prisoners will be able to register after December 17 to 25 for voting through the postal ballots in the upcoming election. So far 46,701 government officials and employees registered through the app to vote in the February-12 election after the announcement of the election schedule announced on December 11. The Election Commission said postal ballots will be sent by mail to the registered voters’ addresses. After casting their votes, voters will have to return the ballots in the provided return envelopes to the respective returning officers. The EC also said that instructions in this regard have already been sent to the Secretary of the Finance Division. According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination paper is December 29, while the scrutiny of nomination paper is on December 30-January 4 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is January 20. The election campaign will start on January 22 and continue till 48 hours before the balloting period (7:30am on February 10). The Trump administration on Tuesday expanded US travel restrictions to cover 20 additional countries and the Palestinian Authority, doubling the scope of sweeping limits announced earlier this year on who can travel to or immigrate to the United States. Under the new decision, five more countries have been added to the list facing a full ban on entry to the US, while 15 others will be subject to partial restrictions. People travelling on documents issued by the Palestinian Authority are also now fully barred. The measures are set to take effect on Jan 1. The administration said the move is part of broader efforts to tighten US travel and immigration standards, citing national security, immigration enforcement and foreign policy concerns. Officials pointed to problems such as corruption, unreliable civil documents, high visa overstay rates and refusals by some governments to accept deported nationals. Those exempted from the restrictions include lawful permanent US residents, people who already hold valid visas, diplomats, athletes and others whose entry is deemed to be in the US national interest. In June, President Donald Trump announced a ban on travellers from 12 countries and partial restrictions on seven others, reviving a signature policy from his first term. Countries already under a full ban included Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, while partial restrictions applied to Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. The administration said the full ban list has now been expanded to include Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan and Syria. South Sudan had already been subject to significant travel limits. Partial restrictions have been imposed on Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Ivory Coast, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The restrictions apply to both visitors and those seeking to immigrate to the US. The decision follows the arrest of an Afghan national accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House over the Thanksgiving weekend. In the aftermath, the administration announced a series of new immigration measures, including tougher rules for people from countries already under restrictions. Critics said the expanded ban unfairly targets people based on nationality rather than individual risk. Advocacy groups also warned that the updated policy no longer includes an exemption for Afghans eligible for Special Immigrant Visas, which are granted to those who assisted US forces during the war in Afghanistan. Several governments affected by the new measures said they were seeking clarification from US officials. Dominica said it was treating the issue with urgency, while Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to Washington described the matter as serious. The administration also adjusted earlier restrictions, tightening rules for Laos and Sierra Leone while easing some limits on travellers from Turkmenistan. The new restrictions on Palestinians expand earlier limits that had already made it difficult for holders of Palestinian Authority passports to travel to the US, and now also block them from immigrating. President Donald Trump on Tuesday ordered what he described as a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, sharply escalating pressure on President Nicolás Maduro and tightening restrictions on the country’s oil-dependent economy. Trump announced the move on social media, days after US forces seized an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast following a military buildup in the region. He alleged that Venezuela was using oil revenue to fund drug trafficking and other crimes and said the US would continue increasing its military presence. In his post, Trump claimed Venezuela was now surrounded by a major US naval force and warned that pressure would intensify until the country returned oil, land and other assets he said had been taken from the United States. Pentagon officials referred questions about the announcement to the White House. Venezuela’s government strongly condemned the order, accusing Trump of violating international law, free trade rules and freedom of navigation. In a statement, Caracas said the US president was making a reckless and serious threat by attempting to impose a naval blockade and was falsely claiming ownership of Venezuela’s natural resources. The government said it would raise the issue at the United Nations. The announcement follows a series of US military strikes on boats in international waters in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific as part of an anti-drug campaign. US officials say the operations have disrupted drug trafficking routes, though they have drawn criticism from lawmakers concerned about civilian deaths and legal boundaries. At least 95 people have been killed in 25 known strikes, according to the Associated Press. The Trump administration has said the campaign aims to stop drugs bound for the United States, but senior officials have also suggested it is intended to weaken Maduro’s grip on power. Trump has previously said the military effort could expand from the sea to land targets. Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves and produces about one million barrels per day, with oil serving as the backbone of its economy. Since US oil sanctions were imposed in 2017, the state-owned company PDVSA has relied on a network of unflagged tankers to sell crude on the black market, mainly to China. Smaller volumes go to the US through Chevron and to Cuba, analysts say. It remains unclear how Washington plans to enforce what Trump called a total blockade. Australian police on Wednesday charged a suspected gunman in the deadly Bondi Beach shooting with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder, as Sydney’s Jewish community began holding funerals for victims of what authorities described as a terror attack. Police said Naveed Akram, 24, was formally charged after regaining consciousness in a Sydney hospital, where he had been in a coma since police shot him during Sunday’s attack. His father and alleged accomplice, Sajid Akram, 50, was killed at the scene. The charges include one count of murder for each fatality, one count of committing a terrorist act, about 40 counts of causing grievous harm with intent to murder and one count related to placing an explosive device with intent to cause harm. Police said improvised explosive devices were found in the suspects’ car at the crime scene. Investigators said two attackers killed 15 people and wounded more than 20 others during an antisemitic assault targeting Jews celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach. All identified victims were Jewish. The ages of those killed ranged from a 10-year-old girl to an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor. As the city mourned, authorities said the attack was believed to be inspired by the Islamic State group. Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said the suspects had come to the attention of security agencies in 2019, and investigators were now reviewing what was previously known about them. Police are also examining overseas travel by the suspects, including a trip to the Philippines in November. Philippine authorities confirmed the visit but said there was no recent evidence of foreign militants operating in the country’s south. The first funeral held was for Eli Schlanger, 41, an assistant rabbi at Chabad-Lubavitch of Bondi and organiser of the Hanukkah event where the shooting occurred. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has described himself as “half-Sylheti” while speaking at a discussion meeting on Great Victory Day at the City Pavilion in London. “Many of you here are not just from Sylhet, but from other districts as well. Yet most of you are Sylhetis,” he said. The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing a discussion organised by the London Chapter BNP at the City Pavilion, marking Great Victory Day early on Wednesday. He added with a smile, “But there are people from outside Sylhet too… whether from Sylhet or elsewhere… I am also half-Sylheti, so there’s no need to say more.” The audience responded with enthusiastic applause, and Tarique appeared visibly cheerful. Bangladesh Embassy in Mexico City observed the Victory Day 2025 with due respect and solemnity on Tuesday. A large number of Bangladeshi expatriates and distinguished members of the local Bangladeshi community participated in events organised by the embassy. The day-long programme began with the hoisting of the national flag at the embassy premises by Ambassador Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey. Followed by this, a special discussion session was held at the embassy auditorium where he paid tribute to all martyrs of the Liberation War, including the martyred President Ziaur Rahman and the nation’s valiant freedom fighters, while highlighting the historic significance of Victory Day. Addressing the event, Ansarey said, “On this glorious day in 1971, our cherished independence was won through the blood of countless martyrs. Their sacrifice, bravery, and unparalleled courage will remain immortal in the history of our nation.” He said, “Our freedom was not presented on a silver platter; it had to be seized through a bloody struggle, immense sacrifice, and selflessness. We saw this spirit of defiance continue during the July mass uprising, when fearless young people stood up against oppression, injustice, and tyranny.” The ambassador emphasised that freedom of expression must remain unrestricted. However, it cannot be misused to rehabilitate democratic killers, murderers, or looters, underlining the importance of unity in preventing the resurgence of fascist forces.  

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested three more people, including the parents of prime suspect Faisal Karim Masud, in connection with the attempted murder of Dhaka-8 aspiring independent candidate Sharif Osman Hadi in Puratan Paltan. With the latest arrests, the total number of detainees in the case has risen to 10. The newly arrested people are Faisal’s father Humayun Kabir, 70, his mother Hasi Begum, 60, and another suspect, Md Faisal, 25, a resident of Narsingdi. They were later handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, according to a media release issued by RAB-10 on Tuesday night (December 16, 2025). On the night of the incident, he reportedly carried a bag to the apartment and later disposed of it discreetly. He subsequently sent his 18-year-old nephew, Jamil, to retrieve the bag. During the period, Faisal also threw one of his mobile phones from the rooftop and handed another phone to his mother, RAB officials said. Feeling insecure in Agargaon, Faisal allegedly moved to Mirpur and later to Shahjadpur, where he stayed at the residence of his cousin Arif, the nephew of his father Humayun Kabir. However, forensic examination is yet to confirm whether the weapons were used in the shooting. Hadi, a spokesman of the Inquilab Moncho formed after last year’s July uprising, was shot in the head on Friday while campaigning in Puratan Paltan. The assailants opened fire from a moving motorcycle. On Monday, he was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment. With the consent of Hadi’s family, Abdullah Al Zaber, member secretary of Inquilab Moncho, filed a case with Paltan Police Station on Sunday night, naming Faisal Karim Masud and several unidentified individuals. The case, now under DB investigation, has already led to the arrest of Faisal’s wife, a female friend, his brother-in-law, the owner of the motorcycle used in the attack, an accomplice named Kabir, and two others from border areas accused of aiding his escape. "In view of the on-going security situation, we wish to bring to your kind notice that IVAC JFP Dhaka will be closed at 2 PM today," said a notification issued by the IVAC in Dhaka. All applicants with appointment slots scheduled for submission today will be rescheduled for a later date. The Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park (JFP) in Dhaka is the main, integrated center for all Indian visa services in the capital.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Tuesday urged party leaders and activists to remain alert and united, warning that the days ahead will be challenging as conspiracies against the country continue. “I am saying again, the time ahead will not be easy. Everyone must stay alert and united,” he said. The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing a discussion meeting organised by London Chapter BNP at the City Pavilion, marking the Great Victory Day early Wednesday. Referring to the political situation in Bangladesh, he said the conspiracies have not stopped and the upcoming national election will not be easy. “I warned you a year ago that difficult times lay ahead. The conspiracies would continue and the election would not be easy. Many of you can now see that what I said then is happening,” he said. Addressing a hall full of expatriate Bangladeshis, Tarique asked whether they would be able to stay united. When the audience responded loudly in the affirmative, he said unity is the key to success. “If we stay united, only then will we be able to implement our plan to rebuild the country. We can build the Bangladesh we dream of and establish accountability only if we remain united,” the BNP leader said. BNP completes preparations for Tarique’s return after 18 years in exile Citing the United Kingdom as an example, Tarique said people in Britain enjoy fairness because of an accountable system, while people in Bangladesh have been deprived of their rights for a long time. “There is no alternative to unity. United we stand, divided we fall,” he said. Tarique Rahman was arrested in 2007 during the army-backed caretaker government. After falling seriously ill in custody, he came to London in 2008 on bail for advanced medical treatment, accompanied by his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman. After nearly 18 years in exile, Tarique is set to return to Bangladesh on December 25. The Victory Day programme with expatriates also served as a farewell event, as Tarique prepared to lead the party ahead of the 13th parliamentary election scheduled for February 12 next year. At the start of his speech, Tarique spoke about his upcoming return and thanked the expatriates for their support over the years. “I am returning home on December 25, InshaAllah, with your prayers and Allah’s mercy. I ask for your prayers for me and for our leader, Begum Khaleda Zia. Pray that Allah gives me the strength to carry out the plans I have for the country and its people,” he said. The BNP leader also requested that no one go to Heathrow Airport on the day of his arrival. “Gathering at the airport could create chaos and attract unnecessary attention, harming the image of the country and the party. Those who respect my request will honour the party and the country. If some go despite my request, I will assume they have done so for personal reasons,” he added. A short video was shown highlighting Bangladesh’s journey from the 1971 Liberation War to recent student-led protests and the vision for a new Bangladesh. Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu observed the Victory Day-2025 in a befitting manner on Tuesday, with a large Bangladeshis attending the event.   The Bangladesh mission hosted a very colorful and festive programme on its premises to celebrate the great day with due solemnity and fervor. Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar, the Secretary General of SAARC Secretariat, Bangladeshi officials working at the SAARC Secretariat; expatriate nationals working in various regional organizations in Nepal; officials from Biman Bangladesh Airlines Nepal Office; members from the Bangladesh community in Nepal; distinguished personalities and business persons from Nepal attended the event.   In addition, players and officials of a Bangladeshi women’s football club (Nasrin Sports Academy) currently visiting Kathmandu also joined the event to celebrate the occasion. The day’s programme began at 10 am on the Embassy’s premises with the hoisting of the national flag and playing of the national anthem. A one-minute silence was observed in remembrance of the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the nine-month long Liberation War. A special prayer was also offered seeking salvation and eternal peace for the departed souls of the martyrs of 1971 war as well martyrs of the July–August Mass-uprising 2024. Shafiqur said that the July Mass-Uprising added a new dimension towards achieving the unfulfilled dream of the liberation war by providing the opportunity to build a fair, just corruption-free and inclusive Bangladesh 2.0, a dream envisioned by the valiant freedom-fighters of the Liberation War. Drawing an analogy on the unique spirit of the Liberation War and July Mass-uprising 2024, he underlined that as the valiant freedom fighters laid down their invaluable lives for the cause of freedom leading to the emergence of Bangladesh, a new state free from political, social and economic discrimination, the youths of the new generation in 2024 made supreme sacrifices to rebuild the country based on the values of democracy, equity, fairness and justice. Delivering the concluding remarks, he urged all expatriate Bangladeshis to work from their respective positions towards building a new Bangladesh 2.0 in the spirit of the Liberation War and the Mass-uprising 2024. Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC), the state-owned maritime operator, is preparing a landmark plan to procure 22 mother vessels worth Tk 10,000 crore, aiming to strengthen the nation’s control over seaborne foreign trade. If implemented over the next five years, the initiative will significantly expand the presence of Bangladeshi-flagged ships in the country’s import-export operations, officials said. They said the move could both conserve foreign currency and increase revenue, while creating new training and employment opportunities for seafarers. BSC will fund the procurement partly through its own resources and partly via government-to-government agreements, sourcing vessels from South Korea and China. A milestone in BSC’s 54-year history came last October when the corporation purchased a ship with its own funds. The vessel, Banglar Pragati, marked the first time BSC procure a ship independently. “Historically, this is the first time a ship has been purchased with our own funds,” BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek told UNB. “As part of this plan, another cargo vessel, Banglar Nobojatra, will join the fleet by the end of December. Two new cargo ships with capacities of 55,000–66,000 tons are expected to generate an annual revenue of Tk 150–200 crore. Currently, our fleet has six ships, and we plan to expand it to 22 mother vessels over the next five years,” he said. Industry experts say expanding the state-owned fleet is essential to reduce reliance on foreign carriers. Considering Bangladesh’s growing trade, more vessels are required,” he said. At one time, BSC held the highest number of Bangladeshi-flagged vessels, with 34 ships in the 1990s. Over the years, the fleet shrank due to aging ships, irregularities, and mismanagement. The decline forced the country to rely heavily on foreign shipping, costing nearly Tk 1 lakh crore in foreign currency annually. Though BSC gradually procured six new ships since 2018, one was lost to a missile strike amid the Russia-Ukraine war, and two oil tankers were decommissioned following a fire, leaving the fleet with just five ships. The addition of Banglar Pragati last October temporarily increased the fleet to six. Chittagong Port Authority member (Harbour and Marine) Commodore Amin Ahmed Abdullah noted, “Increasing the number of domestic-flagged vessels will enhance Bangladesh’s competitiveness in international trade and improve efficiency in import-export operations.” Shafiqul Alam Jewel, former vice president of the Bangladesh Shipping Agents’ Association, added, “Currently, all BSC vessels operate abroad and rarely dock at Chittagong or within Bangladesh waters. For the country’s economic interest, these ships should be deployed on domestic routes.” BSC reported a record Tk 250 crore profit last year. Since starting operations in 1972, the corporation’s fleet has fluctuated, once numbering 38 ships, while the private sector’s fleet surpassed 100 vessels. Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked sixth on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 199 at 9:50 am this morning (December 17, 2025). Today Dhaka’s air was classified as ‘unhealthy’ referring to a healthy threat, according to the AQI index. Such unhealthy air quality continued for the past few days. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate’, usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. Bosnia Herzegovina’s Sarajevo, India’s Delhi and again Kolkata cities respectively occupied the first, second and third spots on the list, with AQI scores of 450, 285, and 239 respectively. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. ‘Unhealthy’ air quality persists in Dhaka Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon. As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

The Trump administration announced Tuesday an expansion of U.S. travel restrictions to include 20 additional countries and the Palestinian Authority, doubling the number of nations affected by limits introduced earlier this year. The updated policy imposes full travel bans on citizens of five new countries — Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria — as well as individuals traveling on Palestinian Authority-issued documents. Fifteen other countries face partial restrictions, including Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Ivory Coast, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The rules apply to both visitors and prospective immigrants. Hyundai and Kia have agreed to provide free repairs for millions of vehicles under a nationwide settlement aimed at addressing weaknesses in anti-theft technology that left the cars vulnerable to theft. The agreement, announced Tuesday by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, requires the automakers to repair all eligible vehicles at no cost to owners, a program that could exceed $500 million. The companies must also ensure that all future vehicles sold in the United States are equipped with engine immobilizers — a key anti-theft device — and pay up to $4.5 million in restitution to consumers whose vehicles were damaged by thieves. The settlement involves 35 states, including California, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Vehicles eligible for the fix were sold between 2011 and 2022, with an estimated 9 million affected nationwide. The case followed a sharp rise in Hyundai and Kia thefts after videos circulating on TikTok and other social media platforms beginning in 2021 showed how certain models could be stolen using simple tools such as a screwdriver and a USB cable. FIFA has sharply reduced prices for a limited number of World Cup tickets for the most dedicated supporters following a wave of global criticism, allowing some fans to buy seats for as little as $60 — including for the final — instead of paying up to $4,185. The move marks a rare retreat by FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino, who have faced mounting backlash over World Cup planning decisions, particularly high ticket prices and closer political ties with U.S. President Donald Trump. FIFA announced Tuesday that $60 tickets will be available for every match at the North America tournament. These tickets will be allocated to national football federations whose teams are competing, with each federation responsible for distributing them to loyal supporters who regularly follow their teams at home and abroad. Between 400 and 750 tickets per team per match are expected to be offered under what FIFA now calls a “Supporter Entry Tier.” The tournament will be staged across 16 cities — 11 in the United States, two in Canada and three in Mexico. While FIFA did not directly explain the sudden policy shift, it said the lower-priced tickets are intended to better support traveling fans throughout the competition. However, Football Supporters Europe (FSE), which represents grassroots fan organizations, described the move as a response to intense global criticism. The condition of Sharif Osman Hadi, Inqilab Moncho spokesperson who was looking to run in the upcoming election as an independent candidate, had deteriorated slightly according to primary tests upon reaching Singapore, but is now stable. Inqilab Moncho's verified Facebook page provided the update in the evening, quoting Hadi's brother who travelled with him as the source.  Hadi is being treated at the Singapore General Hospital.  It added that he will need another surgery, but Hadi's physical condition is not yet ready for it. Earlier on Monday, an air ambulance equipped with all emergency facilities for a critical patient, departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport carrying Hadi, who was shot in the head from close range in an assassination attempt last Friday, to Singapore for advanced treatment. The decision to send Hadi abroad for treatment was taken on Sunday. RAB arrests close aide of main accused in attempted assassination of Osman Hadi He was shot after Jummah prayer on Bijoynagar Boxculvert road in the capital. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet injuries from where he was shifted to Evercare hospital. Following the incident, law enforcement agencies launched a series of operations to identify and arrest those involved. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police earlier said Faisal Karim Masud, alias Daud Khan, a Chhatra League activist with a criminal record. Although he is believed to have crossed the border into India with another suspect with links to the Awami League, who drove the motorcycle from which Faisal/Daud shot Hadi while riding pillion. RAB and police have already earlier arrested eight suspects for their alleged roles in aiding the shooter.  

Bangladesh celebrated Victory Day on Tuesday with great enthusiasm, as people across the country paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War through ceremonies, rallies, and cultural programmes. The celebration began with the traditional 31-gun salute ringing out across the capital at the break of dawn, to honour the nation’s martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Liberation War. At the Old Airport area in Tejgaon, an artillery regiment of the Bangladesh Army fired 31 rounds from six guns to pay tribute to the heroic martyrs who laid down their lives in the War of Liberation. President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial here, on the outskirts of the capital with the rise of the sun. 

Children with cancer and their families across several countries were exploited in online fundraising scams that raised millions of dollars for treatment but delivered little or none of the money to the intended beneficiaries, a BBC World Service investigation has found. The investigation uncovered at least 15 families who said they received little to nothing from fundraising campaigns created in their children’s names, despite emotionally charged videos being used to solicit donations globally. Nine families linked to what appears to be the same scam network said they received none of the roughly $4 million apparently raised. One of the cases involved Chance Letikva Khalil, a seven-year-old boy from the Philippines who died of cancer a year after appearing in a fundraising video. His mother, Aljin Tabasa, said she was paid a one-time filming fee of $700 but never received any of the $27,000 the campaign appeared to have raised online. According to the BBC, families were often asked to stage highly emotional scenes, including shaving children’s heads, attaching fake medical equipment and forcing children to cry on camera. Parents said they were told the videos would help raise funds for better treatment. The campaigns were found to be professionally produced and widely promoted online, often claiming urgent, life-or-death situations. Many were linked to an organisation called Chance Letikva, registered in Israel and the United States, as well as other similarly named entities.

Dhaka University has observed the great Victory Day today through a range of programs. On the occasion, activities were organized across the campus all day long.  The programs included the hoisting of the national flag at dawn at the Vice-Chancellor’s Building and other important university buildings, a gathering at the Smriti Chirantan premises, and the laying of wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar by teachers, students, officers, and staff of the university under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. Among those present were Pro Vice Chancellor (Admin) Professor Dr. Sayma Haque Bidisha, Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, along with teachers, students, officers, and employees. Exhibitions and screenings of Liberation War-based paintings, films, and documentaries were organized at various residential halls. Different student organizations also arranged diverse programs marking the day. On the occasion, important campus locations including the Faculty of Arts Building, Curzon Hall, the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), and Smriti Chirantan were illuminated with decorative lighting. Residential halls were also adorned with lights. After the Asor prayers, special prayers were offered at the university’s central mosque, Masjidul Jamia, as well as at mosques in various halls and residential areas, seeking forgiveness for the souls of the martyrs and praying for the country’s prosperity and development. Special prayers for the eternal peace of the martyrs were also held at other places of worship on campus. In the evening, a cultural program was held at the TSC Auditorium, jointly organized by the Department of Music, the Department of Dance, and the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies of the university.

Sudan has topped a global watchlist of humanitarian crises for the third consecutive year as a devastating war continues to ravage the northeastern African nation, an international aid group said on Tuesday. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) placed Sudan at the top of its annual Emergency Watchlist, which identifies 20 countries facing the risk of worsening humanitarian conditions in 2026. The IRC urged the international community to urgently scale up humanitarian funding, warning that global aid has dropped by about 50 percent this year and that 2025 is on track to become the deadliest year on record for aid workers. The occupied Palestinian territories and South Sudan ranked second and third on the list due to severe humanitarian challenges. Other countries on the watchlist include Ethiopia, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Ukraine, Syria and Yemen. Although the listed countries account for only 12 percent of the world’s population, they represent 89 percent of people in need of humanitarian assistance, with 117 million displaced worldwide, the IRC said. It warned that these countries are expected to host more than half of the world’s extremely poor by 2029, describing the situation as a breakdown of the post World War II international order. The group said many of the conflicts are fueled by struggles for power and profit. In Sudan, it noted that warring parties and their international backers have benefited from the gold trade, with devastating consequences for civilians. David Miliband, president and chief executive officer of the IRC, said the watchlist reflects deep global misery but also serves as a warning, calling on the international community to act before 2026 becomes even more dangerous. The IRC also called for binding global actions, including suspending the use of veto power at the UN Security Council in cases involving mass atrocities. Sudan descended into chaos in April 2023 when tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces erupted into open warfare. The conflict has been marked by mass killings, sexual violence and ethnically motivated attacks, which the United Nations and international rights groups have described as war crimes and crimes against humanity. According to UN figures, more than 40,000 people have been killed, though aid groups say the actual death toll could be far higher. The war has displaced more than 14 million people and triggered widespread disease outbreaks and famine in parts of the country, creating what aid agencies describe as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Both the military and the RSF have been accused of violating international law, with most atrocities attributed to the RSF. The United States has accused the group of committing genocide in the Darfur region. The latest wave of violence was reported in late October after the RSF captured el-Fasher, the military’s last stronghold in Darfur. Witnesses said RSF fighters went door to door, killing civilians and carrying out sexual assaults. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity were committed in the city. Satellite imagery analyzed by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab indicated widespread and systematic killings, including attacks on civilians trying to flee or sheltering in residential neighborhoods. The RSF has not responded to requests for comment on the allegations.  

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said proposals being negotiated with the United States to end Russia’s nearly four-year war against Ukraine could be finalized within days and then presented to Moscow. Speaking after talks with U.S. officials in Berlin on Monday, Zelenskyy said the draft peace plan was not perfect but workable, although major issues remain unresolved, including the future of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russian forces. U.S.-led diplomatic efforts appear to be gaining momentum, with American officials saying there is agreement with Ukraine and European partners on about 90 percent of the U.S.-authored peace framework. U.S. President Donald Trump said a peace settlement is closer than ever before. Zelenskyy said discussions in Berlin brought negotiators close to an agreement on strong security guarantees for Ukraine. A NATO country official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the proposal is based on Western support to keep Ukraine’s military strong. Under the plan, European countries would lead a multinational force to help secure Ukraine by land, sea and air, while the United States would head a ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanism with international participation, the official said. However, the focus is now shifting to Moscow, where Russian President Vladimir Putin may oppose parts of the proposal, including postwar security guarantees for Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated on Tuesday that Russia wants a comprehensive peace deal rather than a temporary truce. He said Moscow would not accept solutions that merely give Ukraine time to regroup before continuing the war. Zelenskyy said the land issue remains a key obstacle. He stressed that Ukraine will not recognize Russian control over any part of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, which includes Luhansk and Donetsk. Russian forces do not fully control either region, although Trump has previously suggested Ukraine may have to concede territory. Zelenskyy said the United States is exploring compromise ideas, including the proposal of a free economic zone in the Donbas, but stressed that such a zone would not be under Russian control. Putin is seeking international recognition of Russian control over parts of four Ukrainian regions seized by his forces, as well as Crimea, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2014. Zelenskyy warned that if Putin rejects diplomatic efforts, Ukraine will seek stronger Western pressure on Russia, including tougher sanctions and increased military assistance such as enhanced air defense systems and long-range weapons. He said Ukraine and the United States are preparing up to five documents related to the peace framework, with several focused on security arrangements. Zelenskyy described the Berlin talks as positive, saying they demonstrated unity among the United States, Europe and Ukraine.  

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Tokyo celebrated the Great Victory Day 2025 with due solemnity and a series of commemorative programmes. He also expressed profound respect for the martyrs of the July 2024 mass uprising and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu hosted a colorful and festive program today to celebrate Victory Day 2025 with due solemnity and fervor. The event was attended by H.E. Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar, Secretary General of the SAARC Secretariat, Bangladeshi officials working at the SAARC Secretariat, expatriate nationals in various regional organizations in Nepal, officials from Biman Bangladesh Airlines Nepal Office, members of the Bangladeshi community in Nepal, distinguished personalities, and business persons from Nepal. Players and officials of the Bangladeshi women’s football club Nasrin Sports Academy, currently visiting Kathmandu, also joined the celebration. The program began at 10:00 am with the hoisting of the national flag and the national anthem. A one-minute silence was observed in remembrance of the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the nine-month-long Liberation War. A special prayer was offered seeking salvation and eternal peace for the martyrs of the 1971 war and the July–August Mass Uprising 2024. Messages on the significance of the day from the Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Chief Adviser, and Hon’ble Adviser for Foreign Affairs were read out.  

Britain's unemployment rate for people aged 16 and over was estimated at 5.1 percent in the August-October period, rising further amid sluggish labor market conditions, data released Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed. The figure rose by 0.4 percentage points from the May-July period, according to the ONS. Annual growth in employees' average total earnings, including bonuses, stood at 4.7 percent in August-October. In real terms, adjusted for consumer price index (CPI) inflation, earnings grew by 1 percent, the data showed. The number of payrolled employees fell by 0.5 percent between October 2024 and October 2025, and declined by 0.1 percent between September and October 2025. Liz McKeown, director of economic statistics at the ONS, said the overall picture continued to point to a weakening labor market. "The number of employees on payroll has fallen again, reflecting subdued hiring activity, while firms told us there were fewer jobs in the latest period," she said. Jane Gratton, deputy director of public policy at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said Tuesday's data reflected that businesses were "less confident about hiring staff due to sky-high employment costs and a tidal wave of new employment legislation coming down the track." Noting that 72 percent of businesses surveyed by the BCC said labor costs were the biggest cost pressure they faced, Gratton said there was a limit to how much additional cost firms could absorb without affecting investment and growth. She called for "a laser-like focus on stimulating growth and boosting investment, trade, innovation and skills" to make 2026 "a year of delivery." 

Bangladesh left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman became the most expensive Bangladeshi player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history on Tuesday after Kolkata Knight Riders secured his services for 9.20 crore rupees at the IPL auction. Mustafizur, who had a base price of 2 crore, attracted strong interest from multiple franchises, with Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders engaged in a bidding contest before Kolkata emerged victorious. The final price surpassed the previous record for a Bangladeshi player at the IPL auction, set in 2009 when Mashrafe Mortaza was signed by Kolkata for $600,000 — equivalent to roughly 5.45 crore at current exchange rates. The signing marks Mustafizur’s sixth IPL franchise. He previously represented Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings. With Kolkata, he adds another chapter to a career that has made him one of the most sought-after overseas pace options in the league. Mustafizur made his IPL debut in 2016 with Sunrisers Hyderabad and played a key role in their title-winning campaign, taking 17 wickets in 16 matches, including a best of three for 21. Lebanon’s judicial authorities on Tuesday ordered the release of former economy minister Amin Salam on $100,000 bail after he spent months in detention over alleged financial crimes, officials said. Salam, who was arrested in June, will be barred from travelling for six months while investigations continue. Judicial officials said he will face trial at the Beirut Criminal Court once the case file is completed. Four judicial officials, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said Salam has paid the bail and is expected to be released within hours. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency also reported the decision to release Salam and the bail amount, without providing further details. Salam has been charged with forgery, embezzlement and misuse of public funds. At the time of his detention, local media reported that the case involved allegations of extorting private insurance companies and using money from a committee overseeing those firms for personal expenses. Salam has denied all allegations. He served as economy minister for more than three years after being appointed in 2021, a period marked by a sharp economic collapse in Lebanon, widespread power outages, fuel shortages and soaring food prices. Lebanon has been attempting to reform its crisis-hit economy, which has long been plagued by profiteering and financial mismanagement.  

China created 12.1 million urban jobs in the first 11 months of 2025, meeting its full-year target of over 12 million a month ahead of schedule, official data showed on Tuesday. Over the same period, the average surveyed urban unemployment rate was 5.2 percent, better than the annual target of about 5.5 percent, according to data from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. Central to household livelihoods and social stability, employment has remained high on China's policy agenda, with authorities introducing comprehensive measures to support job growth.

One of the two attackers behind the deadly mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, which left 15 people dead during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration, was originally from Hyderabad and had been living in Australia for nearly three decades, Indian police said on Tuesday. The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was shot dead by Australian police during the attack. His son, Naveed Akram, 24, who authorities say carried out the assault alongside him, survived and is currently hospitalised under police guard. Australian investigators have described the incident as a terrorist attack inspired by the so-called Islamic State group. The Director General of Police of India’s Telangana state said Sajid Akram was a native of Hyderabad and migrated to Australia in November 1998 on a student visa. He had completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Hyderabad before leaving India in search of work. Police said Akram lived in Australia for about 27 years and maintained limited contact with his family in Hyderabad during that time. Senior Telangana police officials said there was no evidence of any operational or ideological link between Akram’s alleged radicalisation and India. Akram last visited Hyderabad in 2022 and continued to hold an Indian passport. His two children, a son and a daughter, were born in Australia and are Australian citizens. According to investigators, Akram’s relationship with his extended family in Hyderabad had deteriorated years ago due to family disputes, and relatives had cut ties with him long before the attack. Police said he did not attend his father’s funeral in 2017. After moving to Australia, Akram married Venera Grosso, described by police as a woman of European origin. The family settled permanently in Australia. The shooting occurred on Sunday at Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most popular public locations, where families and community members had gathered for a Hanukkah event. Fifteen people were killed when gunfire broke out. Australia’s federal police commissioner, Krissy Barrett, said on Tuesday the attack was “a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State,” adding that the alleged attackers appeared focused solely on causing mass casualties without regard for the victims’ age or condition. Authorities said the attackers were a father and son. Sajid Akram was killed at the scene, while Naveed Akram was injured. Police seized a vehicle registered to the younger suspect and said they recovered improvised explosive devices and two homemade flags linked to the so-called Islamic State group. Australian police are also probing a trip the two suspects made to the Philippines in the month before the attack. The Philippine Bureau of Immigration confirmed that Sajid Akram and his son entered the country on November 1 and left on November 28. According to the BBC, Sajid Akram travelled using an Indian passport, while his son used an Australian passport. They declared Davao city as their destination and booked return flights to Sydney. Davao is located on the island of Mindanao, a region that has previously seen activity by Islamist groups such as Abu Sayyaf, which had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in the past. However, the Philippine military said it could not immediately verify reports that the suspects received any military-style training during their stay. Philippine security officials said militant groups in the region have been significantly weakened by long-running military operations and that there has been no recent evidence of foreign militants operating there. Both films were criticised for feeling like leftover parts of the Marvel saga, unlike Fantastic Four: First Steps, which performed better. Disney’s live-action Snow White failed to recover its budget amid controversies over casting and politics. Similarly, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, delayed for months after his hit Parasite, disappointed critics and audiences. Other flops included After the Hunt starring Julia Roberts, the Christy Martin biopic Christy, teen horror revival I Know What You Did Last Summer, Bruce Springsteen drama Deliver Me from Nowhere, and Pixar’s Elio, all of which underperformed despite high expectations. Sequels and reboots like M3GAN 2.0 failed to replicate the original’s success, while The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson did not attract audiences seeking lighter entertainment. The BBC said Tuesday it will defend a $5 billion lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump over an edited clip of his January 6, 2021, speech in a Panorama documentary. Trump filed the suit in Florida, accusing the broadcaster of defamation and violating trade practices law. He claimed the BBC “intentionally and deceptively” altered his speech. The BBC apologised for the edit last month but rejected Trump’s demands for compensation, saying there was no basis for a defamation claim. The Panorama programme showed Trump’s speech as: “We're going to walk down to the Capitol… and I'll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell,” which the BBC acknowledged could give the impression of a direct call for violence. Trump’s original speech included the phrases, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” and, “And we fight. We fight like hell.” The lawsuit also cites possible access by Florida viewers through VPNs or streaming service BritBox. The BBC said it did not distribute the documentary in the US. The case comes after a leaked BBC internal memo criticised the edit, leading to the resignations of director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness. The BBC said it will defend the case and declined further comment. British politicians, including Health Minister Stephen Kinnock and opposition leaders, backed the BBC, highlighting the broadcaster’s independence. Trump has previously filed multiple lawsuits against US media organisations, winning some settlements. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday said national leader, three-time former Prime Minister, one of the leading figures of democratic politics and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is an integral part of an important chapter in Bangladesh history. "As you know, the national leader, three-time former Prime Minister of the country, one of the leading figures of democratic politics and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is currently in the hospital in a critical condition. This is a matter of concern for all of us," he said. While addressing the nation on Tuesday evening, Prof Yunus said the interim government has been giving utmost importance to Begum Khaleda Zia's health issues since the beginning. "Considering her unwavering commitment to the independence, sovereignty and democracy of Bangladesh, her contribution to the development of the country and the people's respectful feelings towards her, the government has already declared her as a VVIP," he said. The government is providing all necessary assistance to ensure her treatment, respecting the wishes of the family. In addition to her treatment in the country, all matters, including advanced medical treatment abroad, if necessary, are being considered, Prof Yunus said. After assuming office, he said, the interim government has given utmost importance to three issues - the trial of the July-August massacre, the necessary fundamental reforms of the state structure for the transition to an accountable and effective democratic system, and a fair election. The trial of the massacres committed by the then fascist government during the July Uprising is proceeding in due legal process. The verdict of one case has already been announced by the tribunal. The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the head of the fallen fascist government, to death for being the main instigator of the indiscriminate killings of students, workers and the general public of the country, through an independent and transparent evidence-based trial process. As part of the due legal process, he said the government has formally requested the Indian government to return Hasina, who has been absconding since the uprising, and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, another accused convicted in this case, to the country. Prof Yunus said a number of institutional and structural reforms have already been completed. Dozens of old laws have been amended, and several new laws have been enacted,he sThe biggest step in the reforms is the July National Charter. It has been issued in the form of an order to ensure fundamental constitutional reforms. "Dear people of the country, I have come before you today with a very heavy heart. On this joyous day, I inform you with deep sorrow that the recent attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, a frontline fighter of the July Uprising, is not just an attack on an individual—it is an attack on the existence of Bangladesh, an attack on our democratic path," he said. Sharif Osman Hadi is currently undergoing treatment in a critical condition. The government has taken all necessary measures to ensure his treatment and safety, Prof Yunus said. He has already been sent to Singapore for better treatment. "Please pray to Almighty Allah for him from the bottom of your hearts." "The government is taking this incident very seriously. Those involved in the incident have been initially identified," the Chief Adviser said. "I want to assure the countrymen that no one involved in this conspiracy, no matter where they are, will be spared," he mentioned.

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has named a road in the capital's diplomatic quarter after Felani Khatun, the minor girl who was shot dead by India'a border security force in 2011, as a 'symbolic gesture of protest.' It would also serve as a reminder to uphold Bangladesh’s dignity as a sovereign nation, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz said on Tuesday. “This road, stretching from Gulshan-2 to Pragati Sarani, has been named after Felani as a symbol and protest to maintain our national dignity. We believe that while interacting with any country in the world, including our neighbours, we must uphold human dignity and respect. The Liberation War teaches us the importance of human dignity,” he said. Azaz made the remarks during the unveiling of the nameplate of Felani Avenue in Gulshan to mark Victory Day. Chief Guest Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, said: “Eighteen crore people of Bangladesh want an end to border killings. Our sister Felani gave her life hanging from a barbed wire. This road is named to remind us of the cruelty committed against her and to appeal to the conscience of the world that heinous crimes like border killings are still happening along our borders. This is why the government inaugurated this road in her name on Victory Day, demanding an end to all types of border killings.” Local Government Department Secretary Md. Rezaul Maksud Zahedi, added that Felani's killing was not just a killing, but a clear violation of human rights as well. Public Works Secretary Md. Nazrul Islam, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md. Riazul Islam, DNCC Chief Engineer Brig. J. Moin Uddin, DNCC Secretary Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Urban Planner SM Shafiqur Rahman, and other senior DNCC officials, also attended the event. Felan­i Khatun was shot dead by BSF on January 7, 2011, at the Anantapur border point in Kurigram’s Fulbari upazila while returning to Bangladesh with her father. Her body was left hanging on the barbed-wire fence for hours, sparking widespread outrage in national and international media. Felani’s brother joins BGB Since then, various groups have repeatedly demanded that the road in front of the Indian High Commission in Gulshan be named after Felan­i. On September 13, 2024, the Peoples’ Activist Coalition (PAC) symbolically named the road ‘Shaheed Felan­i Sarak’ and installed an unofficial signboard in protest against border killings. Now, the interim government has officially renamed the stretch as Felan­i Avenue.

BNP has completed preparations for the residence and offices of its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman ahead of his return to Bangladesh after nearly 18 years in exile in London. Party leaders said Tarique, the eldest son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and Chairperson Khaleda Zia, will move into house number 196 on Gulshan Avenue. The BNP Chairperson currently lives at a rented residence, ‘Firoza’, located next to the house. Separate chambers have been prepared for the Acting Chairman at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, beside the Chairperson’s chamber. Another chamber has also been set up for him at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan. Besides, BNP has rented another house in Gulshan from where all activities related to the 13th national parliamentary election will be coordinated. Mahdi Amin, Adviser to the BNP Acting Chairman, formally shared the information at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon at BNP’s new office at house 10/C on Road 90 in Gulshan. He also announced a national reel-making competition titled 'Amar Vabnay Bangladesh' (Bangladesh in My Thoughts) to mark the return of Tarique to the country. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said people across the country are waiting for their leader. He said leaders and activists from all levels of the party will stand in an orderly manner along the roads to welcome him, and preparations are underway accordingly. On Monday, a joint meeting of BNP and its associate bodies was held at the Chairperson’s Gulshan office, where detailed discussions took place on arrangements for welcoming Tarique. The meeting was chaired by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Party sources said the house on Gulshan Avenue was allocated to Begum Khaleda Zia after the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman, following a unanimous decision by the cabinet led by then President Justice Abdus Sattar. A few months ago, the ownership documents of the house were formally handed over to Khaleda Zia. Preparations at Tarique’s residence are almost complete. During a visit to the house, it was seen that security sheds have been set up in front of the building and CCTV cameras installed along the road. Security personnel said the measures were taken as Tarique Rahman will be residing there. Regarding the new Gulshan office, BNP has rented the four-storey building at house 10/C on Road 90. The building has strict security arrangements. A briefing room has been set up on the second floor, while other floors have offices for various party departments, including a research cell. BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan said party leaders and activists who have been working for a long time are eagerly counting the days until Tarique sets foot on Dhaka soil. He expressed hope that the party leader would restore democracy in line with the expectations of the people. Speaking at the press conference, Mahdi Amin said the new office will function as a BNP office from where election-related activities will be conducted. He said Tarique’s return has created strong public emotion, hope and interest across the country. Mahdi also said the party believes that building a future Bangladesh requires all pro-democracy citizens, beyond political and ideological differences, to work together. As part of the homecoming programme, BNP has launched a national reel-making competition. The competition will run until December 25, allowing people from all walks of life at home and abroad to submit one-minute creative reel videos online, expressing their ideas, plans and hopes for building the country. National election as per schedule, no fear: Tarique Rahman Mahdi said the main goal of the initiative is to directly involve people in BNP’s vision of rebuilding the state and to bring grassroots ideas to the party’s top leadership. He also said the top 10 winners will get an opportunity to interact directly with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at a special event. Members of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council, the party’s foreign relations committee and the media cell were present at the press conference.    

Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) China unit celebrated Victory Day with expatriate Bangladeshis in China on Tuesday. The programme took place at a local restaurant in Guangzhou, where leaders and activists participated in a discussion meeting to mark the occasion. The meeting was presided over by Shakhawat Hossain Kanan and moderated by former student leader and BNP Greater China leader Asif Haque Rupu. In his speech, Shakhawat Hossain Kanan urged expatriate Bangladeshis to help continue democratic rule by supporting the party’s electoral symbol, the “sheaf of paddy,” and encouraged them to motivate their family members in Bangladesh to vote for the symbol. Asif Haque Rupu alleged that anti-independence forces had repeatedly attempted to undermine the country’s freedom. The programme also highlighted Bangladesh’s proud history and culture and aimed to strengthen the spirit of patriotism among the expatriate community. Other speakers included BNP China unit leaders Sheikh Mahbubur Rashid, Wali Ullah, Hasmat Ali Mridha, S.M. Al Amin, and Musa Noor Islam.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday said no one can stop the country’s march towards democracy by intimidation, terror acts or bloodshed, categorically noting that such an attempt by the 'defeated fascist terrorists' will be completely thwarted. 'I appeal to you—maintain restraint. Do not listen to propaganda or rumours. We will definitely confront the fascist terrorists who want to create unrest together. We will not fall into their trap," he said while addressing the nation in the evening on the occasion of the Great Victory Day. State-owned Bangladesh Television (BTV), BTV News, and Bangladesh Betar simultaneously broadcast the speech. Earlier, the Chief Adviser enjoyed Victory Day Fly Past, Parajump, and Band Display at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka. Prof Yunus said the defeated fascist forces will never return to the sacred soil of this country. "Dear people of the country, protect our youth. Then we all and our beloved motherland will be saved. Those who have fled the country have understood that the young fighters are a huge obstacle to their resurrection," Prof Yunus said. He said those who fled the country are terrified of these unarmed, fearless, completely indifferent to personal interests—these everyday-looking children. Anti-independence forces trying to resurface on Victory Day: Fakhrul "Their goal is to remove these obstacles before the elections and re-establish their rule. They will dream of this as long as their friends are with them," Prof Yunus said. Once the elections are over, he said  their friends will have trouble getting support. "That is why there is such a rush. They want to ensure their return before the elections. They will do it in various ways. This secret assassination attempt is one form of it. They are preparing for a more difficult plan," Prof Yunus said. Everyone in the country must say loudly that they will protect the youth, he said "Those who are here following the slavery of the old days must come out of slavery. By holding festive, peaceful elections, we will all establish our complete control over the country," he said. There are only two months left until the elections, scheduled to take place in February. "We will keep an eye on them and make every day of the remaining days festive. Since there is no fear in the minds of our young people, they will make every moment of the two months before the elections festive," Prof Yunus said. The country will be saved from all kinds of violence and conflicts, he said. Victory Day: Nation honours Liberation War martyrs Today, the Chief Adviser said they are standing on the threshold of a new history. "This country is ours. This state is ours, its future is also in our hands. Now is our turn to move forward unitedly. We want to take this Victory Day as a golden opportunity to unite anew in national life," he said. "It is our collective responsibility to move forward with the goal of empowering the people, taking the historical inspiration of the Great Liberation War and the July Uprising, and to advance the new journey that has begun on the path of democratic transition," Prof Yunus said. He called for joint efforts to build a safe, happy, and beautiful Bangladesh for the new generation to fulfil the century-old struggle and freedom achieved through much hardship. Regardless of religion, caste, group, and gender identity,  he said, "Let us all join hands and move forward on the path of peace, prosperity and democracy. Let us move forward together on the path of justice, democracy, humanity, and development." Prof Yunus once again extended his heartfelt greetings to everyone on the Great Victory Day.

The Inter Services Public Relations Directorate in a statement has condemned certain media outlets and social media platforms for circulating "false, misleading and unfounded reports involving the Bangladesh Navy. These reports allege that a Bangladesh Navy ship intruded into Indian waters and deliberately sank an Indian fishing trawler named PAROMITA-10 while it was engaged in fishing activities in the Bay of Bengal. In fact, at the time the Indian fishing trawler met with the accident, a Bangladesh Navy patrol ship was conducting routine maritime patrol well within Bangladesh waters, at a distance of more than 12 miles from the incident location. Bangladesh Navy had no involvement whatsoever in the said incident, says an ISPR media release on Tuesday evening. On Monday (Dec. 15), at 1515 hours Bangladesh Local Time, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) of the Indian Coast Guard officially informed MRCC, Dhaka via email that an Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) named PAROMITA-10 had capsized and sunk in Indian waters in the Bay of Bengal with 16 fishermen on board.  Another Indian fishing trawler IFB RAGHUPATI successfully rescued 11 of the fishermen, while the remaining five remained missing. The Indian Coast Guard subsequently requested all nearby ships and fishing trawlers to assist in the ongoing search efforts.  Immediately upon receiving this information, Bangladesh Navy promptly directed its patrol ship to undertake search activities within Bangladesh waters. Through close coordination and cooperation with the relevant authorities of both countries, a Bangladesh Navy patrol ship actively participated in the searching efforts alongside the Indian Coast Guard and local Bangladeshi fishermen. Such initiatives reflect the Bangladesh Navy’s commitment to humanitarian assistance at sea and contribute significantly to strengthening mutual trust, cooperation and friendly relations between the two neighboring countries. ISPR said notwithstanding these facts, some sections of the News Media and Social Media have continued to disseminate unfounded allegations claiming that a Bangladesh Navy ship entered Indian waters and sank the fishing trawler PAROMITA-10. These claims are entirely baseless.  The publishing of such misinformation is deeply regrettable and unwarranted, the statement said. In this regard, all media outlets were "earnestly urged" to exercise responsible journalism and to refrain from publishing and circulating misleading, sensational or defamatory reports against Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh.  

Mufti Amir Hamza, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami–nominated candidate for the Kushtia-3 constituency, on Tuesday claimed that his party was not opposed to the Liberation War of 1971 but was instead against India, saying the real truth had long been suppressed. “The role of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in 1971 has been misrepresented until now,” Amir Hamza said. “You should read the history book written by Badruddin Umar. From that book, we learned that nearly 90 percent of the narratives written about the Liberation War are false.” He made the remarks while addressing a victory rally organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Kushtia on the occasion of Victory Day. Amir Hamza said the rally reflected the party’s commitment to the country’s independence. “We were against India’s aggression, which is why we were portrayed as opponents. Our aim today is to free the future Bangladesh from India’s dominance and run the country as a truly independent nation,” he said.  “The country will remain united in the future, InshaAllah”. Injustice, discriminations led people to revolt in 1971: Jamaat Ameer He also said all people born in Bangladesh are respected citizens. “We want to move the country forward together. I do not think it is right to drag the past backward. Forgetting past divisions, we will create a new history. It is better not to emphasise party affiliations here—we are all one,” he said. Kushtia District Jamaat Secretary Shuja Uddin Joardar, Assistant Secretary Mazharul Haque, City Jamaat Amir Enamul Haque, and leaders from various levels of the party were present at the rally.      

Md Masuduzzaman Masud, the frontrunner to be the BNP's candidate for Narayanganj-5 (City-Port) in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, announced his withdrawal from the election race on Tuesday, citing security concerns raised by his family in the wake of the assassination attempt on Osman Hadi in Dhaka among his reasons. Masud made the announcement at a press conference held at the Narayanganj Press Club around noon. Masud added that he had tried to contact BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to inform him of the decision but was unsuccessful. He said he would explain the matter to the party leadership at a later time. Masud was named as the BNP's preferred candidate in the constituency, that spans both banks of the Shitalakkhya River, in the first list announced by the party on November 3, covering 237 constituencies. Speaking at the press conference, he said he decided to step aside after his family members expressed serious concerns about his personal safety following the announcement of his candidacy. “After the shooting incident involving Osman Hadi in Dhaka, my family became even more terrified,” he said. His sudden withdrawal appeared to catch many of his supporters off guard, with several expressing anger and disappointment at the press conference. Former joint general secretary of the BNP city unit, Nurul Haque Chowdhury, criticised the decision, saying, “You cannot abandon BNP leaders and activists like this. We came out in your support with many hopes and aspirations. We do not accept this decision.” Nayem Khandaker, member secretary of the city unit of Zia Samaj Kalyan Parishad, also expressed surprise.  “Just a short while ago, he attended a scheduled programme in Shahidnagar. He came straight from there and made this announcement. We were completely unaware of it,” he said. Narayanganj-5 has traditionally been a stronghold of the Osman family of Narayanganj, who were long feared in the area for their reputation as 'godfathers' in the district bordering the capital. In the last three elections, the MP seat was won for Jatiya Party by Selim Osman, elder brother of Shamim Osman, who himself was an AL MP from the neighbouring constituency. Known for their strong ties to AL, the Osman family fled the country as the July Uprising of 2024.

The Bangladesh Army marked Victory Day 2025 with a ceremonial 31-gun salute at sunrise to honour the nation’s martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Liberation War. At the Old Airport area in Tejgaon, an artillery regiment of the Bangladesh Army fired 31 rounds from six guns to pay tribute to the heroic martyrs who laid down their lives in the War of Liberation, ISPR said in a press release on Tuesday. As in previous years, Victory Day is being observed this year as well with due respect and solemnity.    

A three-day programme, “Rokte Ranga Bijoy Amar–2025”, was held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University, marking the Victory Month of December through a series of commemorative and cultural events. Organised jointly by all TSC-based social and cultural organisations, the programme took place from December 14 to 16 at the TSC premises. The event began on December 14 with a mourning rally in memory of the martyred intellectuals. Leaders and members of TSC-based organisations participated in the rally, which started from the TSC premises and ended at Smriti Chirotan at the VC Chattar. Floral tributes were paid to the martyrs, followed by a one-minute silence. In the evening, candles were lit in front of the TSC to honour the martyrs of the Liberation War. On the second day, a national flag sewing programme was held, where members of different organisations stitched the map of independent Bangladesh onto the red circle of the national flag. The flag was later hoisted at the entrance of the TSC. The main cultural segment of “Rokte Ranga Bijoy Amar–2025” began at 3pm on December 15 at the TSC Payera Chattar. In her opening remarks, TSC Director Farzana Basar praised the joint initiative, saying the Liberation War remains a source of strength and emotion for the nation. “It is encouraging to see young people commemorating the sacrifices of the martyrs through such programmes during the Victory Month,” she said. The cultural segment featured diverse performances, including an open quiz by Dhaka University Quiz Society, a street play titled ‘Khyapa Paglar Pyachal’ by Dhaka University Natya Sangsad, a mixed production ‘Rokte Diye Naam Likhechi Bangladesh-er Naam’ by Dhaka University Cultural Society, a puppet show by Dhaka University Environment Society, a planchette debate by Dhaka University Debating Society, and a special mime titled ‘Rong, Rokto O Chitkar’ by Dhaka University Mime Action. Poetry recitations, dance performances, and solo and group songs were also staged. The cultural programme concluded with a Victory Concert featuring performances by bands including Ila Lalala, Durga, Torture Goregrinder, Introit, Apon Ghor, DUBS Team, Red Wine, Unnamed, Krishnapakkha, Anesthesia, and Ants on the Run. The concert was coordinated by the Dhaka University Band Society. On Victory Day today, the program concluded with a collective rendition of the national anthem at the TSC Payera Chattar. Shahriar Nazim Simanto, General Secretary of Dhaka University Research Society and one of the organisers, said the aim of the programme was to spread the spirit of the Liberation War, the sacrifices of the martyrs, and the essence of victory among the younger generation. The “Rokte Ranga Bijoy Amar” programme is a joint annual initiative of TSC-based social and cultural organisations, traditionally held from December 14 to 16 every year.

Subodh was last seen on 5 August 2024 at the Dhaka University Metro Station. His first known appearance in Agargaon dates back to 2017, making the area a historically resonant site within HOBEKI?’s evolving body of work. The return to Agargaon appears deliberate, reconnecting the present moment with the origins of the character. In this latest mural, Subodh is reimagined as a soldier of art rather than war. Instead of a rifle, he carries paintbrushes and spray cans—tools of creation replacing instruments of violence.

Professor Osama Khan, a Bangladeshi-born and Bangladesh-educated academic, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of South Wales (USW). He is set to join the university in May next year. Professor Khan joins USW from Aston University where he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), according to the official website of the university. On his appointment, Professor Khan said, “It is a privilege to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of South Wales. I am deeply inspired by the University’s unwavering commitment to inclusive education and its pivotal role in driving social and economic progress across Wales and beyond. Osama’s early academic foundation was laid at Cumilla Cadet College and Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), before he left for the UK to persuade his higher education at the University of Surrey and the University of Cambridge Judge Business School.     He began his academic career as a lecturer at the University of Surrey in 2004. He moved to Solent University in 2012, where he held a variety of roles including Director of Learning and Teaching at Solent Learning and Teaching Institute. He was appointed as Vice-Provost, Education at the University of Surrey in 2019. Osama will become the first UK public university chief executive who was both born and educated in Bangladesh. His academic journey began at Cumilla Cadet College and Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), before he went on to pursue higher studies in the UK at the University of Surrey and Cambridge Judge Business School. He started his academic career as a lecturer at the University of Surrey in 2004. India has greeted Bangladesh and people of the country on the occasion of Victory Day being celebrated across the country on Tuesday. Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishnkar conveyed the greetings to Bangladesh and its people. "Greetings to Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, the Interim Government and the people of Bangladesh on Bijoy Dibosh," Dr Jaishankar said in a message from his verified X handle on Tuesday. Like every year, the armies of Bangladesh and India have invited each other’s war veterans and serving officers to participate in the Victory Day celebrations on December 16, marking the end of Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971 with the surrender of the Pakistani forces. Eight Indian war veterans and two serving officers of the Indian Armed Forces reached Dhaka on Monday to participate in Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations. Similarly, eight valiant freedom fighters and two serving officers of the Bangladesh Armed Forces went to India on Sunday to participate in the celebrations at Kolkata, said the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Monday. These exchange visits provide a platform for Bangladeshi freedom fighters and Indian war veterans to celebrate the unique friendship between the two countries and to renew memories of the Liberation War, which epitomises the shared sacrifices of the armed forces of Bangladesh and India for Bangladesh’s freedom from occupation, oppression and mass atrocities, the Indian HC said.

Two police personnel were killed when a covered van hit the motorbike they were riding in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia on Tuesday. The deceased were Inspector Mojaharul Islam and ASI Koyed Uddin, both posted at Ishwardi DSB in Pabna district. Officer-in-Charge of Choudhahas Highway Police Station Abu Obaid said when the victims were coming from Ishwardi towards Kushtia the covered van hit the motorbike around 12 pm , leaving both police personnel dead on the spot. Abu Obaid added that preparations are underway to send the bodies to Kushtia General Hospital.

Dense smog shrouded India’s capital on Monday, sending air pollution to its worst levels in weeks, disrupting travel, and forcing authorities to implement strict containment measures. More than 40 flights were cancelled, dozens more delayed, and over 50 trains arriving and departing from New Delhi faced multi-hour delays, officials said. Healthcare experts warned residents to avoid outdoor activities as hospitals reported a surge in patients suffering from breathing difficulties and eye irritation. “New Delhi is like a gas chamber right now. Air purifiers offer limited relief, so the government must come up with long-term solutions,” said Naresh Dang, a physician at Max Healthcare. Delhi’s air quality has remained at the federal government’s “severe” level for the past two days, which can affect healthy individuals’ respiratory systems and seriously harm those with heart or lung conditions. Official readings on Sunday exceeded 450 at multiple monitoring stations, up from 430 on Saturday, marking the highest levels this winter, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. Monday’s readings stood at 449. For reference, values below 50 are considered safe. During severe pollution, authorities advise people to stay indoors and wear N95 masks. Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions are urged to take extra precautions. “I have never seen such pollution before. Last year Delhi was bad, but this year it is worse. I can feel the smoke as I breathe,” said tourist Tiam Patel. To curb pollution, the government has banned construction, restricted diesel generator and vehicle use, and deployed water sprinklers. Schools and offices are allowing students and employees to stay home. Environmentalists, however, warn that these short-term measures are insufficient. New Delhi and its surrounding areas, home to over 30 million people, consistently rank among the world’s most polluted regions. Six of the world’s ten most polluted cities are in India, with New Delhi topping the list for national capitals, according to Switzerland-based IQAir. Pollution spikes each winter due to crop residue burning in nearby states, combined with cooler temperatures that trap smoke from vehicles, construction, and industry. Levels often exceed the World Health Organization’s safe limit by 20 times. “Delhi’s air is unhealthy year-round, even if it appears visibly worse from October to December,” said Vimlendu Jha, an environmentalist. Earlier this month, residents protested against the government’s inaction on air pollution. A Lancet study last year linked long-term exposure to polluted air in India to 1.5 million additional deaths annually. “Air pollution-related deaths are largely uncounted due to the lack of systematic tracking mechanisms,” said Shweta Narayan of the Global Climate and Health Alliance. In October, authorities conducted a controversial cloud-seeding experiment over New Delhi to induce rainfall and clear smog, but the effort failed to produce rain.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1) on Tuesday arrested the prime accused and two others in an attempted murder case over the attack on the members of ‘July Rebels’. The prime accused was Altaf alias Thotkata Altaf, 46, an accused in multiple cases. Tipped off, RAB-1 members arrested him in a drive in BSCIC Industrial Area, RAB officials said. On December 13 when members of the organization formed a human chain in front of Uttara BNS Centre around 6:30pm to protest the shooting of Inquilab Moncho spokesperson Osman Hadi a group of assailants armed with local weapons attacked them, they said. During the attack, Altaf allegedly struck July Rebels member Yusuf Ali Redowan on the head with intent to kill, causing serious injuries, said Md Rakib Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police and Senior Assistant Director (Media Officer) of RAB-1. The attackers also vandalised July Rebels’ head office at Muktijoddha Market in Sector-6 under Uttara East Police Station and threatened its members before fleeing the scene, he added. Yusuf Ali Redowan filed an attempted murder case with Uttara East Police Station. The two other arrestees are Saiful Islam, 37, and Md Amir Hossain Firoz, 47. The arrestees were handed over to the police station concerned for further legal proceedings.

The University of South Wales, in the UK, has announced the appointment of Professor Khan as its new Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, who will join the university in May 2026. It means Osama is going to be the first Bangladesh-born, as well as Bangladeshi-educated chief executive of a public university in the UK. To all of us this means the nation achieved something significant and honorable, a new success or accomplishment that brings pride, just like our heroes historically added feathers for victories on this 16th December – our historic Victory Day.  

President Donald Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit Monday against the BBC, accusing the British broadcaster of defamation and deceptive trade practices over the editing of his January 6, 2021, speech. The 33-page lawsuit claims the BBC broadcast a “false, defamatory, deceptive, disparaging, inflammatory, and malicious depiction” of Trump, intentionally splicing together separate parts of his speech to misrepresent his words. The documentary in question, Trump: A Second Chance? aired just days before the 2024 U.S. presidential election and combined quotes delivered nearly an hour apart into one segment suggesting Trump urged supporters to “fight like hell.” Portions where he called for peaceful demonstration were omitted, the lawsuit says. Trump said the BBC “put terrible words in my mouth” and ignored the “beautiful words” he actually said about patriotism and other topics. The broadcaster apologized last month, calling the edit an “error of judgment,” which led to the resignations of its top executive and head of news. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday aimed at curbing state-level regulations on artificial intelligence, arguing that patchwork rules across the U.S. could slow innovation and let China gain an edge in AI development. An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has sentenced a senior figure of a prohibited Islamist party to 35 years in prison for inciting violence, more than a year after he openly urged the killing of the country’s then-chief justice, according to court officials and a defence lawyer on Tuesday. The convict, Zaheerul Hassan Shah, is a leader of the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan. He was taken into custody last year after a video spread on social media in which he announced a reward of 10 million rupees ($36,000) for anyone who beheaded then-Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Hardline religious groups had strongly criticised Isa after he granted bail to a member of the minority Ahmadi community who was accused in a blasphemy case. The Ahmadi faith, which emerged from Islam, was declared non-Muslim by Pakistan’s parliament in 1974. Members of the community frequently face attacks on their homes and places of worship by Sunni militant groups who view them as heretical. Defence lawyer Maqsood-ul-Haq and court officials said the anti-terrorism court in the eastern city of Lahore delivered the verdict on Monday. The sentencing comes less than two months after the Pakistani government outlawed the TLP following deadly confrontations between the party’s supporters and police during a pro-Gaza demonstration. Since those violent clashes, TLP chief Saad Rizvi has remained unaccounted for. Police claim Rizvi escaped to Pakistan-administered Kashmir amid the unrest, which erupted in early October when he was leading a march from Lahore toward Islamabad, the capital of Punjab province.   

Environment adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Tuesday said the election scheduled for February would lay a strong foundation for democracy by strengthening accountability to people. “The election would help solidify democracy and bring the government under public scrutiny. The journey toward building a discrimination-free and exploitation-free society, a dream yet to be fully realised, could begin from here,” she while talking to reporters after paying tributes to the martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar. Calling the upcoming polls more than just an election, Rizwana said it would also serve as a kind of referendum where people would be able to express their views on key reform issues. Based on that mandate, she said, the democratic journey could begin anew in a refreshed form. She termed attempts to suppress political opponents through violence, including assassination attempts, as unfortunate, condemnable and cowardly. “There is no heroism in such acts. If one has strength, one must face the people,” she said adding that in a democratic state, the path to the people is well known. The adviser said the culture of targeting opponents has no place in a New Bangladesh. She said the government would be considered successful only if it could deliver on its commitments to free and fair elections, justice and reforms. Rizwana Hasan said the government’s goal is to ensure a peaceful and fair election so that people can vote without fear. She said certain forces are active in trying to disrupt the process, stressing the need to counter them alongside building social resistance.

A comet from another star system, 3I/Atlas, made its closest approach to Earth this week, passing safely at a distance of 167 million miles (269 million kilometers). Discovered in July by NASA’s Atlas telescope in Chile, the comet is estimated to be between 440 meters and 5.6 kilometers in size. NASA continues to monitor the icy visitor with its space telescopes, although the comet is fading as it exits the solar system, offering backyard astronomers a final chance to observe it. Scientists note that 3I/Atlas will pass much closer to Jupiter in March, within 33 million miles (53 million kilometers), before heading back to interstellar space, not to return for thousands of years. This is only the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system. Unlike comets like Halley’s, which originate from the solar system’s outer regions, interstellar comets come from star systems elsewhere in the Milky Way. Experts believe 3I/Atlas may have formed in a star system much older than our own, making it a rare and intriguing subject for study. Previous interstellar visitors include the first confirmed object discovered in Hawaii in 2017, followed by a comet spotted by a Crimean amateur astronomer in 2019. Scientists continue to study these celestial travelers to better understand the broader cosmos.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday the people of the then East Pakistan rose in revolt as the Pakistani ruling elite perpetrated injustice and created discriminations against them. He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a youth marathon organised by Jamaat-e-Islami on the occasion of Victory Day at Suhrawardy Uddyan in the capital. The marathon began around 8 am from Suhrawardy Uddyan and concluded at Manik Mia Avenue near the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, passing through Shahbagh intersection and Science Lab. Participants carried national flags and banners with various slogans throughout the route. Shafiqur Rahman said the politics of the future Bangladesh would be guided by a new system by discarding the old political order. “The politics of the new system will be against terrorism, extortionists, murder, rape, false cases, corruption, injustice and all forms of oppression,” he said. He said the marathon would continue until a new Bangladesh built by youths is realised. “No matter how many obstacles or threats come, we will not stop. We will build a new Bangladesh as dreamt by the nation, Inshallah,” he added. Anti-independence forces trying to resurface on Victory Day: Fakhrul Referring to the upcoming election, the Jamaat chief said the people would not allow any kind of technical manipulation. “We do not seek any favour from the Election Commission but if the commission shows favour to anyone, it will not be tolerated,” he said. He said attempts to buy people with black money would fail as people are now much more aware than before. Shafiqur alleged that during the Awami League’s 15 years in power there was no area of the country where people were spared from oppression, which led the entire nation to rise against them during the July movement. He alleged that their current target is the country’s youth and revolutionaries and an attempt was made on the life of Osman Hadi, one of the key leaders of the July movement. “If anything happens to Osman Hadi, the revolutionaries will not remain silent,” he added. Victory Day: Nation honours Liberation War martyrs He said Awami League has wrongly assumed that eliminating one or two leaders would weaken the movement. “They cannot reduce the number of revolutionaries. Rather, the number of revolutionary youths will continue to grow,” he said.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the forces that opposed Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 are once again trying to raise their heads. “Those who stood against Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 are now trying to raise their heads again. But the people of Bangladesh who believe in freedom, independence and democracy will foil all their conspiracies and will surely protect the country’s independence and sovereignty and establish democracy, Inshallah,” he said. Fakhrul made the remarks after placing wreaths at the grave of BNP founder and martyred President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the morning, marking Victory Day. He said the Liberation War began with the declaration of independence by martyred President Ziaur Rahman and reached its final victory on December 16. “That is why this day is extremely important for us and for BNP.” Fakhrul said BNP leaders and activists visited the grave of the proclaimer of independence, paid their respects and took an oath to continue their struggle to protect independence and establish democracy in Bangladesh. He said that on the occasion of the Great Victory Day, on behalf of the party, its Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, they paid deep respect and gratitude to the martyrs of the Liberation War. He also they also paid tributes to BNP founder and martyred President Ziaur Rahman. At the same time, Fakhrul sought prayers for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her as the first female freedom fighter and a tireless guardian of democracy who has fought relentlessly for independence and sovereignty. At around 9:55am, Fakhrul, along with members of the BNP Standing Committee, placed wreaths at Ziaur Rahman’s grave and later joined a special munajat seeking the salvation of the departed soul of the late president. At least seven people were killed when a small aircraft crashed while attempting an emergency landing in central Mexico on Monday, according to local authorities. Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández said the crash occurred in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area about five kilometers from Toluca airport and roughly 50 kilometers west of Mexico City. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui on Tuesday morning paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at ‘Simanta Gaurab’ at the BGB Headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka. On the occasion, a smartly turned-out contingent of BGB presented a guard of honour in tribute to the fallen heroes. Earlier, as part of the Victory Day programmes, the national flag was formally hoisted at sunrise at the BGB Headquarters in Pilkhana and at all BGB regions, institutions, sectors, battalions and units across the country. At dawn, the BGB Director General also placed a wreath-at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar.

Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Tuesday paid tribute to the martyred police members of the Liberation War on the occasion of the Victory Day at the Rajarbagh Police Lines memorial. They placed wreaths at the memorial at around 8:00am. The Home Adviser was the first to lay a wreath. Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Md Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury was present at the time. Later, IGP Baharul Alam, on behalf of the Bangladesh Police, paid floral tribute to the fallen police members. DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali also paid homage. Leaders of the Bangladesh Police Service Association and Bangladesh Police Women Network (BPWN) paid tribute at the memorial afterwards.

The Department of Environment (DoE) has carried out a coordinated nationwide enforcement drive against air pollution, illegal brick kilns, the use of banned polythene and industrial units operating without environmental clearance. During the drives on Monday, mobile courts imposed fines, shut down several illegal brick kilns, destroyed around 1.5 million raw bricks, seized banned polythene and disconnected electricity, gas and water connections of polluting industrial units, the DoE said. In the capital, mobile courts were conducted at Shantinagar intersection, Ramna, Rampura and Merul Badda under the leadership of Sidhartha Shankar Kundu, Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Executive Magistrate. For causing air pollution by dumping construction materials on open roads, three cases were filed under the Air Pollution (Control) Rules, 2022, and fines amounting to Tk 50,000 were realised. Seven companies and house owners were also instructed to immediately remove construction materials from the roads. In Pirojpur, an enforcement drive was carried out at Sriramkathi Bazar in Nazirpur upazila to curb the use of banned polythene. One case resulted in a fine of Tk 2,000 and about 11 kilograms of illegal polythene shopping bags were seized. Later in the afternoon, a clinic in Pirojpur Sadar was fined Tk 6,000 for violating the Medical Waste Management Rules. In Sunamganj Sadar upazila, action against an illegal brick kiln led to a fine of Tk 100,000 imposed on Messrs A.R.B Bricks. The kiln’s operations were completely shut down after extinguishing the fire with the assistance of the Fire Service and destroying raw bricks using an excavator. Large-scale operations were also conducted in Longadu and Kaptai upazilas of Rangamati district against brick kilns operating in defiance of High Court directives. Around one million raw bricks were destroyed, five kiln chimneys were demolished, electricity connections were disconnected, timber was seized and multiple cases are under process. In Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat, two brick kilns were inspected. One kiln was fined Tk 10,000 while another had its chimney demolished and electricity disconnected and raw bricks destroyed. In Narsingdi district, utility connections of three dyeing factories and one battery factory operating without environmental clearance and effluent treatment plants were disconnected. A poultry farm was exempted from disconnection due to an existing legal stay order. In Bheramara upazila of Kushtia, an illegal brick kiln was shut down by demolishing its fixed chimney. The kiln’s operations were stopped and about 500,000 raw bricks were destroyed. The Department of Environment said such enforcement drives against illegal brick kilns, polluting establishments and violations of environmental laws would continue regularly to protect the environment and public health.

He laid the wreath at the altar of the National Memorial at around 6:56 am. After placing the wreath, the Chief Adviser stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect for the memories of the martyrs of the Great War of Liberation in 1971. A smartly turned-out contingent drawn from the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented a state salute on the occasion. The Chief Justice, Advisers of the interim government, Chiefs of the three services, freedom fighters, diplomats, and senior civil and military officials, among others, were present on the occasion. The programmes include placing wreaths at the monuments to pay homage to martyrs, hoisting of the national flags, parachuting with the highest number of national flags, cultural events, arrangement of recitation, essay writing and painting competitions on the Liberation War for children and acrobatic show. Besides, 54 paratroopers will perform a flag-bearing skydive to mark 54 years of the country's independence which is expected to set a Guinness World Record, according to a PID handout. On Victory Day, the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force will conduct separate fly-past exercises at the Old Airport in Tejgaon, Dhaka from 11 am. Along with the government, different socio-political, educational and cultural institutions and organisations have chalked out a series of programmes to celebrate the day. Bangladeshis will celebrate the day at home and abroad. Families of the war heroes, wounded freedom fighters and other distinguished freedom fighters will also pay their tributes. Foreign diplomats, political and social organisations as well as the general people will also lay wreaths in honour of the martyrs. The national flag has been hoisted at all government, semi-government, autonomous, private and important buildings. The main streets and roundabouts in Dhaka and other cities have been adorned with national flags. Newspapers have published special supplements highlighting the significance of the day. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bangla Academy, National Museum, Liberation War Museum, and Bangladesh Sishu Academy, will organise discussions, cultural programmes, drawing competitions, essay writing contests, sports events, and screenings of Liberation War-related documentaries. Victory fairs showcasing local and indigenous crafts have been organised in all districts and upazilas throughout the country. Bangladesh embassies abroad will also organise programmes to highlight the significance of the day. The Bangladesh Postal Service will issue a commemorative postage stamp on this occasion. Religious institutions will arrange special prayers and services for the peace and progress of the country. Special meals will be served at orphanages, old age homes, hospitals, jails, government children's homes, and similar institutions. CA Prof Yunus pays tributes to Liberation War martyrs  All children's parks and museums in the country will be open to public without entry fees and Liberation War-based films will be screened at cinemas cost free. On the eve of Victory Day, the President and the Chief Adviser have issued separate messages highlighting the significance of the day. President Mohammed Shahabuddin said, “On this very day in 1971, we attained our long-cherished freedom and sovereignty through a nine-month-long, bloodied Liberation War.” President Shahabuddin also paid his deepest respect to the valiant martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the war, the wounded freedom fighters, the mothers and sisters who lost their dignity, the families of the martyrs and all the courageous people who dedicated their efforts to the cause of independence. “The aim of the Liberation War was not confined merely to political independence; one of its fundamental objectives was to establish economic emancipation and social justice. Yet even after five decades, our people have not achieved complete political and socio-economic freedom. In this context, the student-led mass uprising of 2024 has rekindled hope for building a just Bangladesh, free from discrimination and corruption,” President Shahabuddin said. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus said, “Through immense sacrifice and the bloodshed of countless martyrs, we secured our independent national identity and our red-and-green flag.” He paid deepest respect to the brave martyrs who laid down their lives during the Liberation War and throughout the long struggle for independence. “Through the July Uprising, we have once again gained the opportunity to establish a democratic system free from discrimination, corruption, and tyranny. The extensive reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government to build a well-governed and progressive Bangladesh are now advancing towards successful completion, with the collective participation of our citizens,” he added. The Chief Adviser urged the people of the country to work together to build a safe, happy, and beautiful Bangladesh for the new generation, fulfilling the promise of the hard-earned independence. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar, marking the Great Victory Day. He laid the wreath at the altar of the National Memorial at around 6:56 am. After placing the wreath, the Chief Adviser stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect for the memories of the martyrs of the Great War of Liberation in 1971. A smartly turned-out contingent drawn from the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented a state salute on the occasion. Prof Yunus later signed the visitors’ book kept at the memorial. The Chief Justice, Advisers of the interim government, Chiefs of the three services, freedom fighters, diplomats, and senior civil and military officials, among others, were present on the occasion. The nation is celebrating Victory Day today, the most joyous occasion marking the birth of the country, with elaborate programmes in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice of the martyrs. On this glorious day in 1971, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation after the Pakistani occupation forces surrendered, bringing to an end a bloody nine-month-long war. The programmes include placing wreaths at the monuments to pay homage to martyrs, hoisting of the national flags, parachuting with the highest number of national flags, cultural events, arrangement of recitation, essay writing and painting competitions on the Liberation War for children and acrobatic show.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Kabir, a close associate of the prime accused Faisal, in connection with the attempted murder of Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, according to information received from the RAB headquarters on Monday night. RAB said Kabir was a key accomplice of Faisal, who has been identified as the principal suspect in the gun attack on Osman Hadi. Further details about the arrest will be disclosed later, the elite force added. Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot by assailants on Friday after Jummah prayer at Bijoynagar Boxculvert road in the capital. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet injuries from he was shifted to Evercare hospital. Finally, he was sent to Singapore by an air ambulance on Monday afternoon for better treatment. CEC takes attack on Hadi seriously, orders immediate action: EC Following the incident, law enforcement agencies launched a series of operations to identify and arrest those involved. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police earlier said Faisal Karim Masud, alias Daud Khan, and another suspect were identified in connection with the attack, while RAB and police have already earlier arrested seven suspects for their alleged roles in aiding the shooter.  

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, on Monday jointly inspected the China-Bangladesh Friendship Residential Hall at the University of Dhaka, accompanied by the Chinese feasibility study expert team. Ambassador Yao said educational cooperation is one of the most fundamental areas of Bangladesh-China relations. He said China stands ready to work with Bangladesh to advance this student-centered, women-focused livelihood project. "It will play the role of a model project for China-Bangladesh educational cooperation," he said. The Bengali nation proudly celebrates December 16 as Victory Day.  The date marks the surrender of the Pakistani army in 1971, bringing to an end the Liberation War.  A new country, Bangladesh, was born after a long and bloody nine-month war. However, even after 54 years of independence, questions remain about issues such as democracy, secularism, the objective history of the war and reform of the education system. In a special interview with UNB, Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, shared his views on the importance of Victory Day, the university’s programmes, research on the Liberation War, the political reality of the 2024 Uprising, challenges in education, and the role of the younger generation. UNB: How do you see the importance of Victory Day on its 54th anniversary? VC: The greatest significance of this day is that Bangladesh emerged as a democratic state. Our main resistance against the Pakistani rulers was because they denied the people’s electoral mandate. The core spirit of the Liberation War lies in freedom, democracy and sovereignty. Our main goal was to establish the people’s rights and democracy in this country. UNB: What programmes has the university taken for Victory Day? VC: Like last year, the university administration has arranged various programmes. These include placing wreaths at the National Memorial, illuminating different offices such as the administrative building and residential halls, and providing improved food for students. There is also a plan to organise a victory rally if the situation allows. UNB: How much participation do you expect from teachers and students? VC: 1971 is our birth identity, and 2024 continues that journey—'24 has completed the unfinished work of '71. Due to long-term fascist rule, confusion was created, but after '24, history has been revived. I believe teachers and students will participate spontaneously. UNB: Does the university have any initiative to research and document the Liberation War? VC: We have established an art gallery to capture the spirit of 2024. We are also preserving the events of 2024 through an oral archive. 2024 was born from 1971 and emerged due to the unfinished promises after independence. It is important to document and remember this. If we fail to fulfil the promise of '71, '24 will return again and again. UNB: Are there any new steps to strengthen Liberation War history in the curriculum? VC: Every department will review its course content. Departments such as history, archaeology, government and politics should give greater importance to this topic. Many people are confused because they do not know objective history. We have both horizontal and vertical histories. The deprivation of Muslims in colonial Bengal and the contributions of Muslim thinkers of the subcontinent have not been properly highlighted. I urge the concerned departments to take immediate action. UNB: Is there any new project on campus to honour the martyrs? VC: There are several memorial structures on campus, including Amar Ekushey, Shaheed Minar, Sansaptak, and monuments for 1952, 1971 and 2024. Recently, we inaugurated ‘Adamya-24’ in memory of 2024. However, these are not enough. More visible initiatives are needed to commemorate 1971 and 2024. Failure to remember history has led to long dictatorships. UNB: Do students know the correct history of the Liberation War? VC: Except for a small number, most students do not know the correct history. Different governments have presented history based on their own ideologies. We want to ensure this does not happen again. Everyone’s contribution must be evaluated fairly. Otherwise, situations like 2024 may occur again. UNB: Is the new generation learning enough from history? VC: I have serious doubts. The main problem is the lack of objectivity. Awareness will grow if students learn history through interviews with families of martyrs, use of technology, oral archives and smartphones. UNB: How much of the spirit of independence has been realised today? VC: We are still trapped in divisive politics. Even a year and a half after 24, hatred has not stopped on the path to restoring democracy. This puts both 1971 and 2024 at risk. Despite many reasons for division, if there is even one reason for unity, we must accept it. Like '71 and '24, we must unite beyond race, religion, caste and gender. Jahangirnagar University suspends 16 students over ragging of freshmen UNB: What is the biggest challenge in the education system after 54 years? VC: There is a division based on education mediums—Bangla, English, Madrasa and technical. These must be unified. The education budget is very low. Internationally, 4–6 percent of GDP is recommended, but we allocate only 1–2 percent. Due to lack of respect and financial security, talented people are not choosing teaching as a profession. An education commission and major reforms are urgently needed. UNB: What are the future plans for academic development and research at the university? VC: Since taking office, we have increased research funding and supported quality researchers. Our international research standing has improved, and we have ranked top nationally several times. We also plan to allocate funds for student research. UNB: What is your message to students and youth on Victory Day? VC: History shows that young people have always led movements for democracy and rights. The experience of elders and the energy of youth together will move the country forward. Students should spend more time in classrooms and libraries to prepare themselves to lead the nation in the future.    

Pakistani authorities have announced plans to produce a film titled Mera Lyari, citing what they described as Indian propaganda in the portrayal of Karachi’s Lyari area in the Bollywood film Dhurandhar. The Sindh Information Department said the upcoming film aims to present what it termed an accurate depiction of Lyari, contrasting with how the area was shown in Dhurandhar, which is set partly in Lyari between 1999 and 2009. The Indian film, released on December 5, depicts the area as being affected by gang violence, police operations, drug trafficking and militancy. Although Dhurandhar was not released in Pakistan, it has drawn attention there following its commercial success in India. The film was directed by Aditya Dhar and stars Ranveer Singh. In a post on X, the Sindh Information Department said Lyari represents “culture, peace and resilience” and rejected what it called attempts to portray the area through propaganda. It said Mera Lyari is scheduled for release in January 2026. Lyari, a densely populated neighborhood in Karachi, has historically been associated with gang-related violence, particularly during the early 2000s, a period depicted in Dhurandhar. The film includes characters based on real-life figures linked to criminal activity and law enforcement operations in the area. Nick Reiner, the son of Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the deaths of his parents at their Los Angeles home, according to media reports citing law enforcement records. Records from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department show that Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody on Sunday night at about 9:15 pm local time. He was formally booked early Monday morning. His case is listed as a felony, with bail set at 4 million dollars. Authorities have not disclosed the specific charge and said the investigation is ongoing. Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead at their residence on Chadbourne Avenue in Los Angeles. Law enforcement sources cited by US media reported that the couple had injuries consistent with stab wounds and that there were no immediate signs of forced entry. Police have not publicly confirmed further details. Emergency services were alerted after a call was made to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division responded and secured the scene while forensic teams conducted examinations. In a brief statement released Sunday night, a family spokesperson said Rob and Michele Reiner had died and requested privacy. No additional details were provided. Nick Reiner had earlier been identified by media as a person of interest in the case. He has previously spoken publicly about struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness and has undergone rehabilitation multiple times. His experiences later formed the basis of the 2015 film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and which was directed by his father. Rob Reiner was a prominent figure in American cinema, directing more than 20 films over several decades. His credits include The Princess Bride, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President and The Bucket List. The Election Commission (EC) on Monday said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has taken the terrorist attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and an independent aspirant from Dhaka-8 constituency, seriously and instructed relevant agencies to take firm and immediate measures to bring the perpetrators under the law. The EC made the statement in response to a ‘news’ circulating in various media outlets and social media, citing the CEC’s remarks he made while inaugurating a Youth Voter Festival in the city’s Gulshan area this morning. According to the EC, the Chief Election Commissioner has taken the attack on Hadi into consideration with utmost importance. As part of it, an emergency meeting was held on Sunday at 4:00 pm with top officials of law enforcement agencies, during which the CEC directed strict measures to ensure the attacker is brought to justice swiftly and instructed steps to prevent such incidents in the future. No uncertainty over national election, reaffirms CEC The CEC also emphasized that the terrorist attack on Hadi will not affect the upcoming elections. The Election Commission hoped the clarification would end any misunderstanding regarding the CEC’s earlier statement. It wished Sharif Osman Hadi a speedy recovery and expressed its deepest condolences to his family.    

Saimon Overseas Limited, a leading corporate travel service provider, has been officially cleared of allegations of money laundering following a thorough investigation conducted by the Financial Crime Investigation Unit and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. Following a show-cause notice issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Saimon Overseas Limited submitted a comprehensive response, supported by bank statements, IATA BSP reports, ticket copies, and all relevant documentation. After careful review and verification, the authorities found no evidence to substantiate the allegations. As a result, the ministry confirmed that, after examining all aspects of the case, the accusations were formally declared false and Saimon Overseas Limited was granted full clearance (Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism letter no. 30.00.0000.000.025.27.0006.25-877, dated December 14, 2025). In a statement on Monday, Saimon Overseas Limited stated, “These false and defamatory allegations were intended solely to damage our long-standing reputation.” “We have already initiated legal proceedings against those responsible for spreading such misinformation,” said Afsia Jannat Saleh, Managing Director of Saimon Overseas Limited and Secretary General of the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB) for the tenure 2024–2025. She also said that this was a planned smear campaign orchestrated by a vested interest group. This group allegedly targeted Saimon Overseas Limited after the company took a strong stance against pervasive irregularities in the air ticketing market, including practices widely blamed for artificially inflating airfares.    

Students residing in accommodation under the “Medhabi Project” run by the As-Sunnah Foundation have implemented a blockade program at the main gate of the administrative building of Jagannath University (JnU) for nine consecutive hours, demanding inclusion in a special scholarship scheme.  As of 7pm on Monday, when this report was filed, the Vice-Chancellor, the Treasurer, and other administration officials remained confined inside. The blockade commenced Monday at 10am in front of the university’s administrative building. The protesting students stated that the blockade would continue until their demands are met. Hasnat Hossain, one of the protesting students, said: “We are standing here with our legitimate demands. Many students stay in halls by paying subsidies of Tk 5,000–6,000. Some even pay Tk 9,000–10,000. So why should we be excluded from the scholarship?” Bakhtiar Islam, a student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture, said, “The As-Sunnah Hall authorities have told us that the Medhabi Hall has no affiliation with Jagannath University. They have instructed that As-Sunnah Hall should not be considered a university hall. We will not leave this place until our three demands are fulfilled. If the demands are not met, the movement will become more intense.” The students’ three-point demands are: inclusion of students residing under the As-Sunnah Foundation-run ‘Medhabi Project’ within the housing scholarship policy, like general students; removal of the imposed conditions of 70 percent attendance and CGPA-based criteria in order to keep the housing scholarship need-based rather than merit-based; and complete withdrawal of the re-admission-related conditions. Meanwhile, the As-Sunnah Foundation has requested that its ‘Medhabi Project’, meant for regular students of Jagannath University, not be considered as an administrative or residential hall of the university.  

The upward trend in remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis has continued in December, with US $1.71 billion in the first 14 days of the month. Bangladesh received $14.74 billion inward remittance so far in the current fiscal year FY 2025-26. According to the latest update from Bangladesh Bank (BB), the $1.71 billion remittance figure for December 14 is an increase by 23.6 percent compared to the same period last year. In December of the previous year (2024), the country received around $1.38 billion in the first 14 days. The growth is attributed to several factors, including incentives offered for sending money through legal banking channels, increased encouragement for using the formal system, and the active role of exchange houses, Remittance inflow has shown robust growth throughout the current fiscal year (FY 2025-26). From July 1 to December 14, 2025, the total remittance inflow reached $14.74 billion. This represents an increase of $2.22 billion compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year (FY 2024-25), when the total stood at $ 12.51 billion. The year-on-year growth rate for the fiscal year to date is 17.8 percent.  

Bangladesh’s economy is currently in a 'deeply depressed' state, and fixing it will be the country’s biggest challenge in the days ahead, said Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) Chairman Abu Ahmed on Monday. “Right now, the economy is in a very depressed condition--this is not a sustainable way to run an economy. The biggest challenge for Bangladesh going forward will be to pull the economy out of depression,” he said. Speaking at the 12th ICSB National Award ceremony at a city hotel, Abu Ahmed said when he took charge of the state-owned ICB, the institution was in a fragile condition and still has to rely on government financial support to operate. “This is not just the picture of ICB. The entire economy of Bangladesh has slipped into depression,” he said. He alleged that for years, loss-making institutions were portrayed as profitable ones, budgets were inflated and revenue collection was shown as satisfactory through exaggerated and misleading data. “We are now paying the price for providing wrong information about the economy. The main task of future governments will be to revive the economy and steer it in the right direction. Any attempt to hide the current economic reality will push the country towards even greater danger,” he warned. Bangladesh Bank approves Tk 3,000 crore low-interest loan for ICB Referring to Bangladesh’s growing debt burden, the ICB chairman said the country has fallen into a debt trap, with external debt nearing $110 billion, compared to less than $50 billion a decade ago. “This can no longer be allowed to increase,” he added. Abu Ahmed expressed optimism that if transparency is restored in economic management, all sectors of the country will gradually recover.      

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his deepest and heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bangladesh, to the families of the fallen peacekeepers, and wished a swift recovery to the injured. “Support is being provided to the wounded peacekeepers ahead of their evacuation,” he said in a statement. The UN chief strongly condemned the horrific drone attacks that targeted the United Nations peacekeeping logistics base in Kadugli, Sudan, on December 13, 2025, resulting in six fatalities and eight injuries – all members of the Bangladeshi peacekeeping contingent serving in the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). He said attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law and he reminded all parties to the conflict of their obligation to protect UN personnel and civilians. There will need to be accountability,” said the UN chief.  He expressed his solidarity with the thousands of peacekeepers who continue to serve under the blue flag in the most dangerous of environments. The UN chief reiterated his call on the warring parties to agree on an immediate cessation of hostilities and to resume talks to reach a lasting ceasefire and a comprehensive, inclusive and Sudanese-owned political process. Pakistan also condemned, in the strongest possible terms, the heinous attack against UN peacekeepers in Kadugli, Sudan.
