Three people including two members of a family died from electrocution in Shaghata upazila in Gaibandha district on Thursday. The deceased were identified as Abdal Hossain, Milon Mia and Mosharraf Hossain. Quoting witnesses, Badsha Alam, officer-in-charge of Shaghata Police Station, said Milon Mia of Kamaler Para village came in contact with a live electric wire, which,went over the tin-shed roof of his house while he was engaged in removing dry leaves from the roof in the afternoon. Youth dies from electrocution in Sylhet Hearing screams of Milon, his uncle Abdal tried to save him, but he too got electrocuted. Another person Mosharraf also tried to save them but unfortunately, he also got electrocuted. On information, police recovered the bodies, said Md Al Kama tomal, Shaghata Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).  

The Council of Advisers on Thursday approved the draft of the National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 at its regular meeting. The approval, subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, was given during the 28th meeting of the Council of Advisers, held at the Chief Adviser's Office with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in the chair. Meanwhile, the final approval of the draft ‘Welfare and Rehabilitation of Families of Martyrs and Injured Students in the July Uprising Ordinance, 2025’ was also given in principle. The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs initiated the move. ‘Sammilito Parishad’, a panel in the upcoming election of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Expprters Association (BGMEA)  has pledged that they will work to build it as a professional business organisation refraining from past political motives. Speaking at a meet the press event at a local hotel on Thursday former president of BGMEA Faruque Hasan urged the association's members to vote the panel's candidates. He described  the candidates of ‘Sammilito Parishad’ as capable to lead the organisation in the global arena amid the tariff war in a very unstable global market situation. Denying the allegation of fake voters in the BGMEA voter list in the past he said, despite political identities  of some board members of BGMEA, they all worked for the development of the clothing sector business. He said that the BGMEA has to work with both political and non-political governments, but there is no scope for involving politics in the organisation. Panel leader Md. Abul Kalam of Chaity Group, senior entrepreneur Moniruzzaman and other senior leaders of ‘Sammilito Parishad’ spoke at the event. Former BGMEA president Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, former board member of BGMEA Abdullahil Rakib, Asif Ashraf, Moshiur Azam Shajal, among others, are contesting in the BGMEA Election for 2025-27. The BGMEA election is set for May 31.      

The Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB) has urged the government to crack down on the syndicates responsible for unfair increase in air fares. In an online discussion held on Wednesday the ATAB leaders called upon the government to intervene decisively to rein in soaring airfares. They described it as artificially created seat shortages orchestrated by these syndicates. The discussion meeting was chaired by ATAB President Abdus Salam Aref.  SCB to partner with Biman in the airline's first Regional Treasury Centre ATAB Secretary General Afsia Jannat Saleh moderated the event. The discussants raised concerns about the detrimental impact of these alleged syndicates on passengers. ATAB representatives claimed that these "unscrupulous groups" are manipulating ticket prices, leading to significant hardship for travelers. Furthermore, ATAB alleged that these same groups are actively engaged in spreading false and misleading information targeting the legitimately elected ATAB committee through various online and traditional media channels, with some instances involving direct threats. They asserted that the "ticket syndicate is a dishonest cartel" involved in black marketing and hoarding to create artificial crises for excessive profit. They urged the immediate revocation of their licenses and demanded stringent legal action against those involved. ATAB leaders suggested that a recent government circular aimed at curbing such syndication has disrupted the monopoly of these groups, leading to their current efforts to regain control through conspiratorial campaigns against ATAB's current leadership. Key figures including ATAB Vice President Mohammad Ziaur Rahman Khan Rezwan, former Executive Vice President and current Executive Committee member Alhaj H.M. Mujibul Haque Shakur, former Secretary General Jinnur Ahmed Chowdhury Dipu, and Deputy Secretary Dewan Rushu Chowdhury voiced their concerns and called for unified resistance against these syndicate groups. They urged the authorities to take swift action to ensure transparency and equal opportunity within the travel trade sector. European Union regulators accused TikTok on Thursday of breaching digital safety rules because of shortcomings in the video sharing app's online ad database.  Mexican beauty influencer fatally shot during TikTok livestream TikTok's ad repository isn't up to the standards required by the bloc's Digital Services Act, known as the DSA, the 27-nation EU’s executive Commission said in preliminary findings from its investigation. The Commission said ad databases are vital for researchers to detect scam ads as well as so-called hybrid threat campaigns, coordinated information operations and fake ads, "including in the context of elections." The DSA is a wide-ranging rulebook that aims to clean up social media platforms and protect users from risks including election-related disinformation. Provisions include requiring platforms to be transparent about digital ads, including informing users why they’re being shown a specific advertisement and who paid for it. The Commission said TikTok doesn’t provide necessary information about the content of ads, the users targeted, and who pays for them. The database doesn’t allow for a comprehensive search for ads based on this information, “thereby limiting the usefulness of the tool,” it said. TikTok did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The shortcomings in TikTok's ad database prevent a “full inspection” of the risks posed by its ad targeting systems, said Henna Virkkunen, the commission's executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy. “Transparency in online advertising — who pays and how audiences are targeted — is essential to safeguarding the public interest," Virkkunen said. “Whether we are defending the integrity of our democratic elections, protecting public health, or protecting consumers from scam ads, citizens have a right to know who is behind the messages they see.” TikTok now has a chance to reply before the Commission issues its final decision, which could result in a fine of up to 6% of the company’s annual global revenue. Residents of Gaza City are grappling with an increasingly desperate humanitarian situation, with no access to safe drinking water, food, or basic necessities, according to a UK-based aid official. Mai Elawawda, a communications officer for the UK-based charity Medical Aid for Palestinians, described dire conditions in a message from southern Gaza, saying, “The future is utterly bleak.” She added, “After more than 19 months of forced starvation, dehydration, and displacement, we do not know how much longer we can hold on.” According to Elawawda, there is “extremely limited” access to safe drinking water, and food is no longer available in markets. What little remains is priced far beyond what most people can afford. Infant formula has become almost impossible to find, and in the rare cases it is available, it costs over $25 (£18). Nappies, she noted, are being sold for more than $30 (£22), “well beyond the reach of displaced families who cannot even secure their daily meals.” During a visit to Gaza City last week, she said, “you would not find a single loaf of bread for sale.” Source: BBC

Tzeela Gez was on her way to the hospital to bring new life into this world when hers was suddenly cut short. As her husband drove their car through the winding roads of the occupied West Bank late Wednesday, a Palestinian attacker shot at them. Within hours, Gez, nine months pregnant, was dead. Doctors barely saved the life of the baby, who is in serious but stable condition. Israel says it is trying to prevent such attacks by waging a monthslong crackdown on West Bank militants that intensified earlier this year. But the escalating offensive, which has killed hundreds of Palestinians over 19 months, displaced tens of thousands and caused widespread destruction, has ultimately not snuffed out attacks. And the latest bloodshed is only likely to fuel a cycle of violence that has persisted for decades between Israelis and Palestinians. Israel has pledged to find the attacker, who fled the scene, and the military chief of staff, who visited the area Thursday, told troops that the broader operation would continue alongside the manhunt. "We will use all the tools at our disposal and reach the murderers in order to hold them accountable,” Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said, according to a statement from the military, which said it had sealed Palestinian villages in the area of the attack and set up checkpoints. The shooting, especially because the victim was a pregnant mother with three other children, has the potential to ignite vigilante violence against Palestinians by radical Jewish settlers. A nor'wester coupled with hailstorms swept several villages of Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat district on Wednesday night, damaging houses, trees and crops.The storm which began around 10:30 pm lasted for about one hour left a trail of destruction in four unions of the upazila.A number of educational institutions were also damaged while hundreds of trees were uprooted during the storm, disrupting road communication on Kakina-Chaparhat regional road.Crops including mangoes, litchis, maize, paddy, nuts and jute suffered damages.Besides, a number of electric poles were also uprooted, snapping power connections in four unions of the upazila. My entire home has been destroyed. Without government aid, I have no way to rebuild.”Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zakia Sultana visited the affected areas and said numerous homes and crops were damaged in Tushbhandar, Madati, Kakina and Votmari unions.She added that a list of affected people is being prepared through local representatives and financial and humanitarian assistance will be provided accordingly by the upazila administration.

These colonial lizards live in loose clusters, digging zig-zagging burrows up to 2 meters long for shelter and hibernation, making them a vital part of the desert ecosystem. The meat, described as white and chicken-like, is a delicacy in some regions, particularly among certain Hindu castes in India . The tail is especially prized. However, the fat is the real treasure, boiled into "sanda oil" and used as an embrocation or a supposed aphrodisiac, believed to treat ailments like joint pain and impotence . In Pakistan, vendors in Rawalpindi’s Raja Bazaar sell this oil, marketing it as a stamina booster. In the wild, the Sanda Lizard is a key prey species for raptors like the Laggar Falcon and Tawny Eagle, which feed on it, reinforcing its ecological importance. Desert foxes and snakes also target it, drawn to its colonial burrows.

A youth died from electrocution at  Kumargaon in Sylhet city early Thursday. The deceased is Md. French actor Théo Navarro-Mussy has been barred from walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival due to accusations of rape and sexual assault—a first in the festival’s history. Navarro-Mussy stars in Dossier 137, directed by Dominik Moll, which premieres in competition on Thursday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor has been accused of “rape, physical and psychological violence” by three former partners. A court dismissed the initial complaint last month, but the alleged victims have announced plans to pursue a civil case against him. Twenty-seven members of erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) were released from Kashimpur jail in Gazipur on bail in connection with a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act over the Pilkhana carnage.The jail authorities said all the 27 accused were released from the jail around 10 am.Their relatives received them at the jail gate.Earlier on Monday, Additional Metropolitan Judge Ibrahim Mia granted bail to the former BDR members. Bangladesh and Japan on Thursday outlined the future area of cooperation between the two countries and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus’ upcoming visit to Japan as both sides eye to take the relationship to a new height. Under the new plan for Free and Open Indo Pacific and Big-B initiatives, Japan wants to see the sustainable development of the region. Japan said it would strengthen its engagement with Bangladesh under the Bay of Bengal Initiative (Big-B), as the country aims to support high-quality infrastructure development projects and encourage Japanese manufacturing and production companies to expand their industrial value chains to Bangladesh. Under the new plan for Free and Open Indo Pacific and Big-B initiatives, Japan wants to see the sustainable development of the region, according to Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo. The issues were discussed at the 6th Japan-Bangladesh Foreign Secretary-level consultations - Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in Tokyo. In February this year, Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Ikuina Akiko invited Chief Adviser Prof Yunus to visit Japan for the Nikkei 30th Future of Asia event to be held on May 29-30 in Tokyo. Prof Yunus is also a recipient of the Nikkei Asia Prize in 2004. The Chief Adviser will attend the Nikkei 30th Future of Asia event and both sides are working to arrange a bilateral meeting between Dr Yunus and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, a diplomatic source told UNB. Secretary (East) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Md Nazrul Islam and Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Akahori Takeshi led the delegations with other participants from the both sides. Bangladesh to attend commonwealth talks in Geneva The meeting touched upon political, economic and sectoral cooperation issues along with trade and investment, people-to-people connectivity and cultural exchanges, Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (Rohingyas), security cooperation, and regional and global issues. The two sides confirmed that they will further strengthen the bilateral relationship in a wide range of areas, including security, economy, economic cooperation, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, under the "Japan-Bangladesh Strategic Partnership" at the FOC, said the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two countries exchanged views on international issues and regional situations. During the meeting, both sides also discussed on human resource cooperation, joint crediting mechanism in energy transition, climate change, disaster and earthquake management and cooperation in Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), Treatment Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) and solar power plants along with mechanisation of agriculture and modernisation of shipyards. The Japanese side reiterated its firm support to the interim government and its reform initiatives and said that it would continue its support for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh.  Both sides agreed to deepen political trust, prioritize development strategies and fully realize ‘Strategic Partnership’. Japan took positive note on Bangladesh’s request to continue Duty-Free Quota-Free (DFQF) access for Bangladeshi products during the post- LDC graduation period and would work for the market access of Bangladeshi products including fruits and vegetables.  Foreign Adviser stresses civilian, peacekeeper protection at UN Berlin summit Bangladesh also sought Japan’s support for more ODA concessional loan, extension of loan repayment period and for budgetary support. Appreciating Bangladesh’s role in giving shelter to the Rohingyas, the Japanese side said Japan would continue their efforts for the early repatriation of the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (The Rohingyas) to their motherland in Myanmar and would continue its humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas.  Both sides also discussed key regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen cooperation on various multilateral issues of mutual interests. Both sides had “very productive, fruitful and wide-ranging” discussion. Both sides reviewed the progress made since the 5th round of Consultations held in June 2024 in Dhaka and The Foreign Office Consultations ended with a vision to fully use and integrate the resources, strategic locations and competencies to ensure development of the peoples of both countries. The British economy grew at its fastest rate in a year during the first quarter of 2025, official figures showed Thursday, in a welcome boost to the Labour government, which has made lifting the country's growth its top priority. The Office for National Statistics said growth, as measured by gross domestic product, increased by 0.7% in the first quarter of the year from the final three months of 2024, with the country's dominant services sector doing particularly well.  Experts call for national coordinating authority to develop blue economy The first quarter increase makes the British economy the fastest-growing among the Group of Seven leading industrial nations. Growth was modestly ahead of market expectations for a 0.6% increase. It was also the biggest increase since the first quarter of 2024, when the economy expanded by 0.9%. Treasury chief Rachel Reeves welcomed the growth leap, and said the figures showed the choices made by Labour since it was elected last July were beginning to pay off. “We’re set to be the fastest growing economy in the G-7 in the first three months of this year and that’s incredibly welcome, but I know that there is more to do," she said while on a visit to a Rolls-Royce factory in Derby, northern England. Most economists think is likely to slow down in the second quarter of the year, partly because of the global uncertainty generated by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies. Though most tariffs were paused for 90 days following the ensuing market turmoil, including the 10% baseline tariff applied to U.K. goods entering the U.S., the backdrop for the global economy remains highly uncertain, particularly if the U.S.-China trade war persists. Some of that uncertainty, with regard to the British economy, lifted Thursday when both Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer separately outlined details of a trade deal between the U.S. and the U.K. Though Trump kept the 10% baseline tariffs on U.K., he agreed to reduce the levies on British autos, steel and aluminum. Sanjay Raja, chief U.K. economist at Deutsche Bank, said the growth uptick will likely be short-lived, especially during the second quarter when trade uncertainty will be at its peak. “Exporters will likely see reduced demand as well from higher U.S. tariffs and weaker global demand,” he said. Economists said growth will likely falter in the second quarter as new taxes on business were imposed in April. At least 10 militants were killed in a gunfight with paramilitary troopers in the northeastern state of Manipur, the Indian army said Thursday. The gunfight broke out Wednesday close to India-Myanmar international border at New Samtal village in Chandel district, about 130 km south of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur, reports Xinhua. According to the Indian army, the paramilitary troopers were working under their command. "During the operation, the troops were fired upon by suspected cadres to which they quickly reacted, redeployed and retaliated in a calibrated and measured manner. In the ensuing firefight, 10 cadres were killed and a sizeable quantity of arms and ammunition have been recovered," an Indian army statement said. India's military says it killed 3 militants in disputed Kashmir Officials said the operation was underway in the area. Manipur is a conflict-ridden state in India's northeast, and several separatist groups often target Indian armed forces.

A group of international lawyers filed a formal complaint to FIFA on Thursday claiming the soccer body is failing to uphold its human rights policy with 2034 World Cup host Saudi Arabia. The filing using FIFA’s own online portal for grievance reporting was made by FIFA’s former anti-corruption adviser Mark Pieth, Swiss lawyer Stefan Wehrenberg and British barrister Rodney Dixon. Their offers to advise FIFA on human rights compliance were ignored before Saudi Arabia was confirmed last December as the 2034 host by acclamation without a rival bidder, reports AP. “As highlighted in this complaint, widespread human rights abuses continue to be perpetrated in Saudi Arabia, and no steps are being taken by FIFA to address these in the buildup to the World Cup,” the lawyers state in a 30-page document. “Instead, it appears it is business as usual with no changes to be made,” the complaint said hours before FIFA opens its first annual congress of 211 member federations since the Saudi hosting win in an online meeting. FIFA president Gianni Infantino was due for an unprecedented last-minute arrival at the congress in Paraguay after joining US President Donald Trump on a state visit to Saudi Arabia. The oil-rich kingdom has repeatedly said it is increasing freedoms as part of the Vision 2030 program to modernize its society and economy. Saudi Arabia has begun a similarly massive construction program for the 2034 tournament which has more teams, more games and needs more stadiums which include designs more extravagant than the eight used in Qatar. “Saudi Arabia has been chosen as the next host country despite its appalling human rights record, including violations relating to freedom of expression, arbitrary arrest, detention and mistreatment, migrants’ rights and women’s rights,” the lawyers’ complaint said. FIFA’s human rights policy was published in 2017 mandating bidders for the men’s 2026 World Cup — being co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico — to“respecting international human rights and labor standards according to the United Nations’ guiding principles.” In a recent letter to Human Rights Watch, which this week detailed alleged abuses of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia, FIFA stated its “steadfast commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights in the context of its operations.” The lawyers’ complaint urges FIFA to see “there remains an opportunity for meaningful reforms in Saudi Arabia, driven by the implementation of FIFA’s obligations under its policy.”

Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman has been signed by Delhi Capitals for INR 6 crore to play the remaining matches of IPL 2025. While the amount has drawn attention as one of the highest-ever figures for a Bangladeshi cricketer in the league, Mustafizur will not receive the full payment. According to IPL rules, players brought in as mid-season replacements are paid on a pro-rata basis, meaning the payout is adjusted according to the number of matches remaining when they join, not the full season’s contract value. Delhi have three league games left, with the possibility of more if they qualify for the playoffs. So, Mustafizur’s earnings will be calculated based on those matches. Even if he doesn’t play every game, being in the squad is enough to qualify for the prorated salary. On top of that, separate match fees are paid if he plays. Mustafizur makes IPL comeback with record-breaking Delhi Capitals deal The left-arm seamer has been signed as a replacement for Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk, who left India amid the recent India-Pakistan tensions. While Fraser-McGurk was bought for INR 9 crore, Mustafizur joins at a lower amount but still one of the highest for a replacement player. As per IPL guidelines, a replacement player’s fee cannot exceed that of the original player. And, such replacements are valid only for the current season. President Donald Trump said Thursday he was not surprised that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be a no-show for anticipated peace talks with Ukraine in Turkey this week. Trump had pressed for Putin and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet in Istanbul on Thursday. He brushed off Putin’s decision to not take part in the expected talks, reports AP. “I didn’t think it was possible for Putin to go if I’m not there,” Trump said in an exchange with reporters as he took part in a business roundtable with executives in Doha on the third day of his visit to the Middle East. Trump earlier this week floated potentially attending himself. The US president, however, noted on Thursday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was already in the country for meetings with NATO counterparts. Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, also plans to be in Istanbul on Friday for the anticipated Russia-Ukraine talks. The push for direct talks between Zelenskyy and Putin comes amid a flurry of negotiations aimed at producing a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Putin was first to propose restarting direct peace talks Thursday with Ukraine in the Turkish city that straddles Asia and Europe. Zelenskyy challenged the Kremlin leader to meet in Turkey in person. Trump marvels at wealth of his Arab hosts while he eyes White House and Air Force One upgrades But the Kremlin has said its delegation at the talks will be led by Putin’s aide, Vladimir Medinsky, and include three other officials. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is set to make his return to competitive cricket, having been picked by Lahore Qalandars for the remainder of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Shakib, 38, confirmed the development on Tuesday to the media.  He will join fellow Bangladeshi cricketer Rishad Hossain in the Lahore squad, with the league resuming on May 17 after a week-long suspension due to India-Pakistan tensions. Former MP Kazim Uddin Ahmed Dhanu was arrested from Aftabnagar area in the capital early Thursday. He was arrested around 3 am, said DMP's Deputy Commissioner (media) Talebur Rahman.  According to Jatrabari Police sources, he was arrested in connection with a murder case filed with the police station on August 26, 2024. Mohammad Arif, 18, sustained bullet injuries during an anti-discrimination protest in front of a madrasa on Bou Bazar Road in Uttar Kutubkhali under Jatrabari Police Station on July 19, 2024. Ex-mayor Taposh’s close associate arrested in Dhaka Arif later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Arif’s father Mohammad Yusuf filed a case naming 243 people. Kazim Uddin Ahmed Dhanu was named as the 14th accused in the case. Police said Dhanu is a FIR  named accused in four separate cases related to killings and attacks.  

Bangladesh’s capital markets continued their downward trend for a third straight day, with indices on both the Dhaka and Chattogram stock exchanges falling in the first hour of trading on the week's final working day. At the outset of trading, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the DSEX, dropped by 9 points. Among the other indices, the Shariah-based DSES slipped by 1 point, while the DS30 index, which comprises selected blue-chip stocks, declined by 3 points. A majority of the listed companies experienced a fall in share prices. While 109 companies saw gains, prices declined for 179 companies and remained unchanged for 92. Market slumps again in Dhaka and Chattogram bourses In the first hour of trading, shares and units worth approximately Tk 65 crore were exchanged on the Dhaka market. Similar to Dhaka, the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) also witnessed a declining trend. The overall index of the CSE fell by 32 points. Out of the 73 companies that participated in trading, share prices rose for 16, declined for 44, and remained unchanged for 13. At the start of the day, shares and units worth Tk 1 crore were traded on the Chattogram Stock Exchange.

A series of Israeli airstrikes struck the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis overnight, killing at least 54 people, according to hospital officials. This marked the second night in a row of intense aerial bombardment. An Associated Press cameraman in the area reported at least 10 strikes overnight and witnessed numerous bodies being taken to Nasser Hospital’s morgue—some in fragments, with body bags containing the remains of multiple victims. The hospital confirmed the death toll at 54. Among the dead was Al Araby TV journalist Hasan Samour, who was reportedly killed alongside 11 family members in one of the strikes, according to a social media post by the Qatari news outlet. Israeli airstrikes in Gaza kill 60, including 22 children The Israeli military has not issued a statement regarding the attack. This wave of strikes followed a deadly previous night in which air raids in both northern and southern Gaza claimed at least 70 lives, including nearly 20 children. The escalation comes during U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East, where he is meeting with leaders in the Gulf but not traveling to Israel. Hopes had been high that the trip might result in a ceasefire or renewed humanitarian aid. Gaza remains under a strict Israeli blockade now in its third month. Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated plans to intensify military operations aimed at eradicating the Hamas militant group. In response, Israel launched a massive military campaign in Gaza, which has since killed nearly 53,000 Palestinians, including large numbers of women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Around 3,000 of those deaths occurred after Israel ended a ceasefire on March 18. Hamas continues to hold 58 hostages from the October 7 attack, with only 23 believed to still be alive, although Israeli officials have raised concerns about the condition of three of them. The war has devastated Gaza, destroying much of its infrastructure and displacing around 90% of the population—many of them multiple times. Israel cut off all aid, including food and medicine, on March 2. International food security experts have warned that famine is imminent unless the blockade is lifted and hostilities cease. Close to half a million Palestinians are on the brink of starvation, with another million struggling to survive, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global authority on hunger crises. A 23-year-old Mexican beauty influencer, Valeria Marquez, was shot and killed while livestreaming on TikTok, according to the Jalisco state prosecutor's office. The incident occurred at her beauty salon in Guadalajara when a man entered and allegedly opened fire. Authorities are treating the incident as a femicide— a crime where a woman is killed due to her gender — though the motive remains unclear. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday arrested a man in connection with the case of a fatal shooting that occurred during the anti-discrimination protest in Dhaka last year. The arrestee, SM Kamal Haider, known as the close associate to former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, was arrested in a raid conducted by CID in the capital. CID’s Special Superintendent of Police (Media) Jasim Uddin Khan said the operation was carried out based on intelligence from a confidential source. Mystic singer-turned AL MP Momtaz detained: DB The murder case stems from an incident on August 4, last year when gunfire broke out in front of Patam Restaurant, located at Dhanmondi 3/1 Lake Road, amid the anti-discrimination demonstration. One protester, Abdullah Siddiq, was killed in the shooting. A murder case was later filed, and CID took over the investigation, said SP Jasim. “During the investigation, CID analysed witness statements, CCTV footage, and other evidence, which provided preliminary proof of SM Kamal Haider’s involvement in the incident,” he said. The process of producing the arrestee before the court is underway, he added.

Bangladesh will participate in the 37th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (37CHMM) to be held on May 17 in Geneva, on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly. Director General of Health Services Dr Namzul Hossain will represent Bangladesh at the meeting, along with senior officials from the country’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, said a media release on Thursday. This will be the first ministerial meeting to be attended by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey since taking office on April 1. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has issued a special order aimed at accelerating the clearance and unloading of goods at Chattogram port. Issued on May 14, the order seeks to reduce container congestion at the port, ensure safety, cut costs, prevent wastage of state resources, and enhance the overall operational capacity of Chittagong Port. According to the NBR, uncleared containers dating from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2023 have severely disrupted port operations. The presence of outdated chemicals and hazardous goods has also posed significant security risks, including the potential for explosions. NBR staff's pen-down strike marks second day Thursday The standard auction process has proven inadequate in addressing these challenges swiftly. Various issues—such as complications with clearing conditional or controlled goods, pending legal cases, non-clearance by auction winners, and logistical shortcomings—have further delayed the process. To address this, the special order outlines a set of streamlined procedures for the auction, disposal, and management of disposable goods (excluding vehicles) until December 31, 2023. Key provisions include: Disposable goods may be sold at the highest price offered in the first auction, without setting a reserve price, except in special cases. Goods deemed conditional, controlled, or prohibited under import/export policies—or goods that have deteriorated or cannot be auctioned—may be transferred without auction to specialized or technically capable organizations for destruction or neutralization. If no bids are received in two consecutive auctions, the goods may be sold at the highest bid received after wide publicity, foregoing a third auction. Expired hazardous or chemical products certified as usable by inspection authorities may be sold to qualified users or organizations at the highest offer. The NBR believes that implementing this order will ease the long-standing container backlog, streamline port operations, reduce costs for importers and exporters, and positively impact the national economy. The revenue board expects all port stakeholders to benefit from the new measures.

Officers and employees of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) continued their work abstention on Thursday, marking the second day of a three-day protest called by the NBR Reform Unity Council—a platform representing officials from the Customs, VAT, and Income Tax wings. The work abstention, which began at 10 am, is scheduled to continue until 3 pm Thursday. It will resume at the same time on Saturday. Under the new ordinance, the government may appoint any qualified government officer as secretary or senior secretary of the two newly formed divisions. The ordinance also places the Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal and the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal under the jurisdiction of the Revenue Policy Division of the Finance Ministry. The interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, recently approved the change. It allows posts within the two divisions to be filled by professionals with expertise in income tax, VAT, customs, economics, business administration, research and statistics, administration, audit and accounting, and legal affairs. The new system argues that separating policy formulation from revenue collection management will enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency within the revenue system. It also states that administrative posts within the Revenue Management Division will be staffed by officers from the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) cadre and by existing employees of the Revenue Management Department. The NBR Reform Committee was formed on October 9 last year, comprising former NBR chairmen Muhammad Abdul Mazid and Nasiruddin Ahmed, along with former members Delwar Hossain and Aminur Rahman.

The National Consensus Commission wants to translate the aspirations of the 2024 mass uprising into a concrete form through a national charter, said commission’s Vice-Chairman Prof Ali Riaz on Thursday. “We want to reflect the spirit of national consensus in a national charter so that every political party can play a role in realising its goals and objectives in the future,” he said at a dialogue with Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) in the city. An 11-member BSD delegation, led by its General Secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz, joined the talks at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Chairing the session, Prof Riaz said the initiative (reform initiative) of the National Consensus Commission is rooted in the long expectations of the people of Bangladesh. “The commission wants to give concrete form to the aspirations that were exposed through the 2024 July-August mass uprising,” he said. Structural reforms must to make Bangladesh democratic: Ali Riaz The Consensus Commission Vice Chairman said the current political situation in Bangladesh is the result of prolonged struggles by both the people and political forces. “The people of this country do not want a return of fascism again and again. Prof Riaz said the commission is working to build consensus through discussions with political parties, based on the recommendations of various reform commissions. “This responsibility does not lie with the National Consensus Commission alone. Students of Jagannath University (JnU) continued their sit-in protest for a second consecutive day on Thursday, occupying the busy Kakrail intersection in Dhaka to press home their three-point demand. They blocked the road at Kakrail chanting slogans like “Aposh Na Sngram, Sangram Sangram,” “Dalali Na Rajpath, Rajpath Rajpath,” “Lorai Lorai Lorai Sai, Lorai Kora Bashta Sai.” Their demands are housing allowance for 70% students of the university from the next fiscal year, approving a full budget for Jagannath University for the 2025-26 fiscal year and building a second campus for the university. 10 injured in clash between two BNP factions in Rajshahi The students declared that they would not vacate the streets until their demands are met. A New Zealand parliamentary committee has recommended the unprecedented suspensions of three Māori lawmakers for performing a protest haka in the debating chamber last year. The haka is a chanting dance of challenge of great cultural importance in New Zealand, and the three lawmakers from Te Pāti Māori, the Māori party, performed one to oppose a controversial bill that would have redefined the country’s founding document. A committee Wednesday recommended record suspensions and severe censure — the harshest penalties ever assigned to New Zealand parliamentarians — after finding the trio in contempt of Parliament. Government bloc lawmakers, who hold the majority, are expected to endorse the penalties in a vote Tuesday. But Parliament’s Speaker Gerry Brownlee took the unusual step Thursday of saying he would first allow unlimited debate before the vote due to the severity of the proposed punishments. The recommendations were the latest twist in the fraught saga over the bill, now defeated, that opponents said would have provoked constitutional havoc and reversed decades of progress for Māori, New Zealand’s Indigenous people. At least 10 people were reportedly injured in a clash between two rival factions of the BNP in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi on Wednesday night, over establishing supremacy in the area and a dispute centring a tender on a local pond. During the clash, a local BNP office was vandalised and set on fire, along with three motorcycles, according to police and local sources on Thursday. Puthia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kabir Hossain said tensions had been brewing since the afternoon over the tender issue. “By evening, both groups brought out processions and demonstrations wielding locally made weapons, which soon escalated into a violent clash,” the OC said. He added that the situation is now under control, with law enforcement agencies patrolling the area to prevent further unrest. Locals said police initially failed to bring the situation under control, prompting the army to intervene and restore order and at least 10 people were injured in the clash. One killed, 15 injured in clash between two groups in Brahmanbaria Azizul Haque, a businessman at Puthia Bazar, said, “The clash went on for over two hours. The situation calmed down only after the army arrived. Fire service officials later brought the fire at the BNP office under control.” OC Kabir Hossain said that additional police and army personnel remain deployed at the scene and legal proceedings are underway.      

The DORP Youth Forum on Thursday called for the merger of the low and medium tiers of cigarette pricing and set the minimum retail price at TK 90 for a 10-stick pack.  The demand was raised during a human chain held in front of the National Press Club urging the government to increase the price and tax on all tobacco products and to reform the existing tobacco tax policy in the upcoming 2025-26 national budget.  Over a hundred university students participated in the demonstration, held as part of the campaign to achieve a tobacco-free Bangladesh and protect public health.  Speakers at the event stated that the affordability and easy availability of cigarettes in Bangladesh have significantly contributed to an increase in smoking among youth, posing a serious threat to public health. Currently, around 18% of youths and adults in the country smoke, resulting in approximately 161,000 tobacco-related deaths each year. DU student Emon highlighted that among the four existing price tiers of cigarettes in the market, sales of low and medium-tier products have surged. These two tiers dominate the majority of the cigarette market.  He argued that merging the low and medium tiers and setting the minimum price at TK 90 per 10 stick pack wouldhascourage the younger generation from initiating smoking. Youth advocate Sinthiya added that if their demands are implemented, at least 1.7 million youths could be protected from the devastating grip of tobacco. Moreover, tobacco-related premature deaths could be significantly reduced. She also noted that the government could earn more than Tk 200 billion in additional revenue, which would be nearly 43% higher than the previous year. WB approves USD270 million to support Bangladesh's flood recovery efforts Dr. Silvana Ishrat, representative of DORP's tobacco control project, remarked that although the average income and inflation have both doubled since 2016, the price of low-tier cigarettes has not increased proportionately. As a result, cigarettes have become even more accessible. She emphasized that without reforming the tax policy, effective tobacco control is not possible. From the human chain, the forum called upon the government to include a proposal for raising cigarette prices in the 2025-26 budget and to develop a robust, health-oriented tobacco tax policy.  The Development Organization of Rural Poor (DORP) Youth Forum expressed hope that the government would recognize the voices of young people and take effective steps to build a tobacco-free, healthy, and sustainable Bangladesh for future generations.      

The World Bank has approved $270 million financing to bolster Bangladesh's flood recovery efforts and enhance its resilience to future disasters. The funds will also cover support for constructing and rehabilitating critical infrastructure, strengthening agricultural system and improving livelihoods in areas devastated by the August 2024 floods. The Bangladesh Sustainable Recovery, Emergency Preparedness and Response (B-STRONG) Project will build and reconstruct rural and flood protection infrastructure in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, providing protection to 1.6 million people, according to a release from the World Bank on Thursday. Taking a comprehensive approach, the project will also promote climate resilient agriculture and help the vulnerable communities with livelihood support. World Bank Interim Country Director for Bangladesh Gayle Martin said that Bangladesh is regarded as a leader in climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness. “But the increasing climate risks and more frequent and severe natural disasters take a heavy toll on communities and the economy. Building resilience against natural disasters is both a development and an economic priority for Bangladesh,” he said. He mentioned that this project will strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness system and improve livelihoods and bolster food security for those hardest hit by floods in Sylhet and Chattogram divisions. This project will help to recover from the flood and build resilience to future floods by addressing damages to infrastructure, agriculture, and livelihoods in Eastern districts. Reforms in key sectors could create millions of jobs in Bangladesh: World Bank The project will construct and rehabilitate 79 multi-purpose flood shelters and repair and climate-proof connecting roads and bridges. These shelters would operate as primary schools in normal weather. It will also construct, repair, and rehabilitate flood protection infrastructure, including embankments and re-excavate canals. It will also support improving flood forecasting system. It will help communities improve disaster preparedness through providing boats, equipment, training, and drills. World Bank Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist and Task Team Leader for the project Swarna Kazi said that the project addresses both recovery and reconstruction needs as well as long-term disaster resilience. “The project will provide truly integrated responses that combine physical interventions and non-physical activities, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery and resilience building, and reducing future flood risks, and preventing vulnerable populations from being left behind.” The project will also help flood impacted communities to enhance earning opportunities by providing financial support and market-relevant skill development training and also offering temporary employment opportunities. Over 380,000 people will benefit from economic inclusion programs and cash-based interventions. At least 65,000 farm households will receive support to improve agricultural productivity through the adoption of high-yielding, climate-resilient, and sustainable crop production technologies and access to agricultural machinery and improved irrigation and storage facilities. The project will set up seed villages to supply quality seeds and seedlings, support women in homestead and community gardening, and create farmer groups to share knowledge on sustainable agricultural practices. Consequently, food security and nutrition will improve too. The multi-sectoral nature of the project supports sectors that were not sufficiently covered by existing flood recovery initiatives.

A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member was killed and four others were injured after being struck by lightning while on patrol along the Kauniya Char-Khetarchar border in Darbhanga union of Roumari upazila, Kurigram early Thursday. The deceased was identified as Riyad Hossain, 32, a member of the 35 BGB Battalion’s Darbhanga Border Outpost (BOP) based in Jamalpur. The injured are Md Jasim, 52, Nadim, 28, Shahin, 28, and Ansar member Ferdous Hossain, 36. Officer-in-Charge of Roumari Police Station Md Lutfor Rahman said the BGB team was patrolling the border area when lightning struck them, killing one and injuring four others. One killed, 15 injured in clash between two groups in Brahmanbaria The injured were taken to different hospitals for treatment. Subedar Farid of Darbhanga BGB camp under the 35 Battalion said the lightning strike occurred during heavy rain while the team was on patrol along the Kauniya Char-Khetarchar border area. All five members sustained serious injuries. They were immediately rescued and taken to Rowmari Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Riyad Hossain dead. Dr Nabiul Islam, the resident medical officer (RMO) at the health complex, said Riyad was brought in dead. Two of the injured BGB members, who were in critical condition, were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, while the others are being treated locally.

Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked third on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 155 at 10:45am this morning (May 15, 2025). Today’s air was classified as ‘unhealthy,’ referring to a severe health threat, according to the AQI index. Though the Dhaka’s air quality was ‘moderate’ with AQI score 93 yesterday morning (Tuesday), a day after it again turned into ‘unhealthy’. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate’, usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. Dhaka’s air turns ‘moderate’ this morning India’s Delhi, Pakistan’s Lahore, and Bahrain’s Manama cities respectively occupied the first, second and fourth spots on the list, with AQI scores of 2210, 181 and 153 respectively. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon. As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.      

Rory McIlroy had a clear explanation for Bryson DeChambeau on Wednesday regarding the lack of conversation between them during their final-round pairing at the Masters: it wasn’t personal—it was just part of the competition. Bock is sidelined with a back injury that will also keep him out of action for the upcoming PGA Championship. Next in line is someone who will look strangely familiar — his twin brother, Sam. “It was already planned,” Straka said. “Dewey's daughter is graduating college on Friday, I believe. So my brother was already going to caddie Friday, Saturday. So it wasn’t a huge change of plans. We just told him he’s going to be going the whole week instead.” Sam Straka also played at Georgia and was considered the better of the Austrian twins at one point. He also caddied for his brother at the Tokyo Olympics. Sepp Straka said Bock had an MRI and is expected to be back to work at the next tournament. Straka won the Truist Championship to go along with The American Express in January. The latest victory sent him to a career-best No. 9 in the world ranking. PGA champions dinner The PGA Championship has a dinner for past champions on Tuesday night, and this one had stronger attendance than most with 17 champions. BFF member Mahfuza Akhter Kiron stopped from flying to Paraguay That included Dave Stockton, with the most history. His first PGA title was in 1976 at Congressional at 1-over 281, making him the last PGA champion to win with a score over par. As usual, there were stories. Rich Beem, the 2002 winner at Hazeltine, was amazed to hear from Larry Nelson, a two-time PGA champion. Nelson won in Atlanta in 1981, and he beat Lanny Wadkins in a playoff in 1987 at PGA National. “He said he won with four sets of irons — he didn't have the same set for the rounds,” Beem said. “And before the final round, he was on the putting green with two putters.” A fascinating story, but maybe not for Wadkins, who also was at the dinner. Wadkins won the first sudden-death playoff in major championship history in 1977 at Pebble Beach. The only two players in the field at Quail Hollow who were not at the dinner were Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka. Viktor Hovland almost skipped the 2024 PGA Viktor Hovland was so unhappy with his swing last year that he considered withdrawing ahead of the PGA Championship at Valhalla. He wound up finishing third. “I almost didn’t play last year, and I almost won the tournament,” said Hovland, who shot a pair of 66s on the weekend and finished three shots behind. “So it’s like I look at that as a huge win. I almost won a major championship without feeling good about my game at all. So I don’t look at that as, like, man, I’m lacking a bunch of stuff.” Hovland had some similar struggles with his swing earlier this year and missed the cut in three straight tournaments, only to bounce back and win the Valspar Championship in late March. Since then he’s made the cut three more times, his best finish a tie for 13th place at the RBC Heritage. And while the world’s 11th-ranked player still isn’t particularly thrilled with his swing, he’s in a better headspace entering this year’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. “If I can get the ball consistently in the fairway off the tee, even though I don’t feel amazing, my iron play has been pretty solid this year,” Hovland said. “So I can still get the ball in the hole.”  

Ten-year-old Araf, a student from Mohammadpur, stood before a local community meeting and spoke the truth many adults had ignored for too long. “We have no place to run, to play, or even to breathe freely. All we see are buildings and cars. We need parks, we need space,” he said years back.  His words echoed across social media, capturing the hearts of thousands.  Parents, teachers and urban planners joined the chorus, lamenting the vanishing open spaces in a city of more than 20 million souls, where concrete triumphs over greenery. Urban experts remind us that the World Health Organization recommends at least 9 square meters of green space per person.  Dhaka can offer barely a third of that. The city's children grow up in the shadow of high-rises, their lungs filled with fumes, their ears numbed by the endless blare of traffic. “This is not just about leisure,” said Dr Samina Rahman, a public health specialist at Dhaka University.  “Lack of access to open spaces contributes to a rise in childhood obesity, mental stress, and developmental issues,” she said.  The laughter that once spilled from playgrounds and alleyways has faded.  In its place stands a dense jungle of cement and steel. Where once children built forts from sticks and imagined castles in the dust, they are now confined within four walls, under the weight of screens and study schedules. Student crisis hits Feni's govt primary schools amid shift to private institutions Dhaka's open fields and playgrounds have withered from around 150 to just 24 in twenty years.  Recess in schools is shrinking. After classes, children tumble into traffic or tuition, seldom into games. Experts see this as more than a loss of play. It is the erasure of imagination. “Play is not just fun — it is how children make sense of the world,” said Dr Nusrat Jahan, a child development expert based in Dhaka.  “Imaginative play sparks creativity, builds problem-solving skills, and develops social understanding. Without it, cognitive and emotional growth is stunted,” she said.  The toll on the body matches that on the mind.  The World Health Organization urges at least an hour of physical activity a day for children. Few in Dhaka meet that mark. Obesity rises, as do postural issues, poor sleep, and even early signs of diabetes and hypertension. Anxiety, attention disorders, and depression are now childhood companions. “Urban children are under silent stress,” said Dr Tahmid Rahman, a paediatrician at a private hospital in Dhaka. “They may not say it out loud, but they are missing something essential — free movement, social bonding, and unstructured play.” Screens fill the void where trees once stood. A 2023 local survey found that children aged 6 to 12 in Dhaka spend around 5 hours daily on screens. That is far beyond recommended limits. Digital devices have replaced crayons, storybooks, and cardboard castles. Attention spans shrink, curiosity dims, and creativity falters under a barrage of passive content. In the face of this, calls grow louder. Urban planners, educators, and parents plead for bold steps — the reclaiming of public land, the greening of schoolyards, the designing of safe, shared spaces for children to simply be children. “Building cities without children in mind is a recipe for long-term social and emotional problems,” said architect and urban designer Rafiq Hasan. “We need to design not just buildings, but lives — with parks, walkways, libraries, and safe play zones.” Some local sparks have flickered into life — rooftop play corners, mobile libraries, weekend pop-up parks. Yet they remain isolated efforts in a citywide maze of neglect. Still, experts speak of hope. “Children are incredibly resilient,” said Dr Nusrat. “If we can give them even a little space, time, and encouragement, their creativity and health will return. But the city must make room — literally and figuratively — for its youngest citizens.” For Ayushi, a 10-year-old from Mirpur, dreams are not extravagant. “I want to ride a bike, draw pictures, and play cricket. Today, those same lanes echo with tension. A darker reality has crept in. The rise of adolescent gangs tells a sobering tale — of youth left idle, disillusioned, and disconnected. In cramped homes and crowded schools, the city's teenagers find little escape. With playgrounds paved over, and sports fields lost to construction, they turn elsewhere — often to gangs. Neighbourhoods like Mohammadpur, Mirpur, and Kamalapur have seen the emergence of adolescent groups bonded by boredom and bravado. These gangs, born from a hunger for belonging, often drift into theft, drug use, and violence. Concrete has not just replaced grass; it has crushed opportunity. Dhaka's playground count has plummeted from over 150 to just 24. Teenagers left adrift by school systems and family pressures find a dangerous kind of structure on the streets. The statistics are chilling. A 2024 report by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police paints a bleak picture. Crimes involving adolescents aged 12 to 18 have surged by 35% in five years. Gang-related violence alone has crossed 500 reported cases — a 25% jump from last year. The numbers speak, but so do the silences — of lost dreams, of restless evenings, of youth that should have been dancing under open skies, not ducking through alleyways. In a city of relentless ambition, its children have become afterthoughts. And yet, as Araf and Ayushi remind us — their dreams remain simple, their needs sincere. Parks, friendships, fresh air. Not too much to ask. Until Dhaka listens, its children will keep calling out — in community meetings, in whispered hopes, and sometimes, in rebellion.      

A former food delivery driver has admitted to participating in a scheme to defraud DoorDash out of more than $2.5 million by arranging for the company to pay for fake deliveries, according to federal prosecutors. Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri, 30, of Newport Beach, California, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in federal court in San Jose to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced. Prosecutors said Devagiri collaborated with three others during 2020 and 2021 to carry out the scam, which targeted the San Francisco-based food delivery platform. Prosecutors said Devagiri used customer accounts to place high-value orders and then used an employee’s credential to gain access to DoorDash software and manually reassign the orders to driver accounts that he and others controlled. Devagiri then caused the fraudulent driver accounts to report that the orders had been delivered when they had not, and manipulated DoorDash’s computer systems to pay the fraudulent driver accounts for the nonexistent deliveries, officials said. Devagiri would then use DoorDash software to change the orders from “delivered” status to “in process” status and manually reassign the orders to driver accounts he and others controlled, beginning the process again, prosecutors said. The now-former employee in the scam pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in November 2023 and admitted to being involved in the scheme, prosecutors said. Devagiri is the third defendant to be convicted of his role in this conspiracy. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 16.

Activities like climbing, gripping, or pounding apply pressure to different parts of the fingers, and over time, bones respond to these stresses by thickening in the areas under the most strain. To understand how ancient humans used their hands, researchers used 3D scanning technology to measure and assess the thickness of finger bones. Their study focused on fossilized hand remains from two early human ancestor species discovered in southern Africa: Australopithecus sediba, who lived roughly 2 million years ago, and Homo naledi, who lived about 300,000 years ago. Ancient footprints rewrite timeline of land-dwelling animals Both ancient human species showed signs of simultaneously using their hands to move around – such as by climbing trees – as well as to grasp and manipulate objects, a requirement to being able to make tools. “They were likely walking on two feet and using their hands to manipulate objects or tools, but also spent time climbing and hanging,” perhaps on trees or cliffs, said study co-author and paleoanthropologist Samar Syeda of the American Museum of Natural History. The findings show there wasn’t a simple “evolution in hand function where you start off with more ‘ape-like’ and end up more ‘human-like,’” said Smithsonian paleoanthropologist Rick Potts, who was not involved in the study. Complete fossil hands are relatively rare, but the specimens used in the study gave an opportunity to understand the relative forces on each finger, said Chatham University paleontologist Erin Marie Williams-Hatala, who was not involved in the study. “Hands are one of the primary ways we engage with world around us,” she said.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has talked of victory after reaching a weekend deal with China to reduce the sky-high tariffs levied on each other’s goods, businesses in China are reacting to the temporary deal with caution. The U.S. and China have cut the tariffs levied on each other in April, with the U.S. cutting the 145% tax Trump imposed last month to 30%. China agreed to lower its tariff rate on U.S. goods to 10% from 125%. The lower tariff rates came into effect on Wednesday. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, announcing the reduction in tariff rates this weekend in Geneva, had said, “We do want trade.” While the markets have responded to the agreement with gusto, rebounding to the levels before Trump’s tariffs, business owners remain wary. Businesses like one kitchen utensil factory in southern Guangdong province were eager to get back to work. The business said they put at least four orders from their American clients back into production on Tuesday after the tariff pause was announced. American Eagle shares slide after pulling 2025 outlook, $75m inventory write-down “We thought the negotiation would bring the tariffs down a bit, but didn’t expect it would be so much,” said Margaret Zhuang, a salesperson for the utensil factory in Guangdong province, one of China’s manufacturing hubs. However happy they were in the moment, the damage from tariffs announced in April has already been done, Zhuang added, as they are seeing fewer orders. Kelvin Liao, sales director at Action Composites, a manufacturer of carbon fiber auto parts in Dongguan, a major city in Guangdong, said he was originally planning to buy a piece of land to build a new factory, but opted instead to rent because of the tariff situation. “It is good to reach a trade deal between the two countries. But people have already lost confidence in Trump, and we will take a wait-and-see attitude,” he said. “We believe the signing a trade deal is just a pause and the ultimate goal of the US is to curb China’s development.” Tariffs also remain in place for some industries, which are not part of the general deal. Hong Kong businessman Danny Lau, who owns an aluminum-coating factory, said his company still faces about a 75% tariff from tariffs levied at different points since 2018 by the U.S. Still he welcomed the news from the weekend, saying he would reach out to existing American customers to gauge their views.

Air Force One received fighter jet escorts, honor guards stood by with golden swords in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the presidential limousine was welcomed by riders on camelback in Doha, Qatar. “We appreciate those camels,” Trump told Al Thani. “I haven’t seen camels like that in a long time. That was some greeting.” He continued to praise Qatar at a state dinner, where he mused that there “wasn’t a tree out of place” in the landscaping. Trump was astounded by the accommodations in Lusail, a new city outside of Doha that was built from the ground up. “This is not your normal house. This is a palace,” he said after signing the guest book. Nothing was said about the migrant workers who raced to develop the country’s infrastructure for the World Cup tournament three years ago, or Qatar’s lack of political freedom, which makes possible such elaborate central planning. The Republican president’s admiration reflects an aesthetic and political vision at odds with American tradition. After declaring independence from the British monarchy, the Founding Fathers wanted to eschew anything that suggested royalty. Even as the United States emerged as the global superpower, the country and its leaders emphasized a facade of humility. But that’s never been Trump’s style. The billionaire’s New York City penthouse is embellished with gold and marble, and parts of his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida are modeled after France’s Palace of Versailles. One prized addition is a copy of the Declaration of Independence, which is concealed behind a curtain to protect it from sunlight. He sometimes dramatically unveils the document for guests. “You see the new and improved Oval Office as it becomes more and more beautiful,” the president told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during a recent visit. He said it’s been renovated “with great love and 24-karat gold — that always helps too.”      

Government primary schools in Feni are facing a serious student enrolment crisis, even after various initiatives taken to bring children back to classrooms. Teachers and education officials point to the growing attraction of kindergartens and madrasas as a major reason behind the falling numbers in public schools. Many parents say they believe private institutions provide better quality education compared to government-run schools, especially in terms of discipline and religious instruction. According to data from the six upazila primary education offices, 180 out of 534 government primary schools in Feni now have fewer than 100 students.  PM opens ‘Bangabandhu Corner’ at a primary school in Tungipara Among them, 12 schools have less than 50 students enrolled. Each school has three to 12 teachers, yet parents continue to express concern over the standard of teaching.  Visits to these schools have revealed poor attendance and lack of classroom engagement.   This year, the district education office recorded 171,946 enrolments in government primary schools—11,624 fewer than in 2024. A serious concern has also emerged due to a mismatch in data between the district and upazila offices.  While the district reports over 171,000 students, the upazila offices together count only 72,795—almost 100,000 less. District officials claim that 97.48% of children aged five to 10 are currently enrolled in government schools.  Guidelines issued for primary schools reopening tomorrow amid heatwave But ground-level reports tell a different story. Several local schools are reporting very low student numbers. Nilkhi Balika Government Primary School in Fulgazi has only 32 students. Devi Pur Ferdous Akhtar School has just 23. Many parents say the absence of religious studies in government schools and what they describe as inattentive teachers, have led them to seek alternatives. Monowara Begum from Rampur said she admitted her daughter to a private school. “The nearby government school doesn’t offer religious studies, and the teachers aren’t attentive,” she said. Jibon Chandra Das, headteacher of Devi Pur Ferdous Akhtar School, said, “We have only three teachers, and most parents are choosing madrasas or kindergartens over us.” Mohid Uddin Khondaker, Secretary General of the Primary Teachers’ Association, said, “Uncontrolled rise of kindergartens and madrasas, mismatch between textbooks and religious beliefs, and shortage of religious instructors are the key reasons why parents are pulling their children out. Teachers also feel less motivated when classrooms are empty.” SM Taherul Islam, education officer of Sonagazi Upazila, said many coastal families prefer work and religious education to formal schooling.  He added that teachers are now going door-to-door in many areas to encourage enrolment. Md Shahadat Hossain, General Secretary of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan), Feni, said, “Parents want quality education. Even those with limited means often choose private schools over nearby government ones.” District Primary Education Officer Firoz Ahmed pointed to post-COVID changes and the closure of local maktabs, which he said have led many families to turn to madrasas.  On the conflicting enrolment data, he explained that district figures are used mainly for estimating the number of books required each year. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education & ICT) Fatema Sultana called the situation “alarming” and said steps will be taken in coordination with the district education office. The 2010 National Education Policy recommends one teacher for every 30 students.  A CPD survey says the national average is currently 1:29. Still, many schools in Feni with far fewer students remain without enough trained or motivated teachers. Primary schools reopen Although the government has implemented measures like stipends, free textbooks, mid-day meals, and school infrastructure development, enrolment in public primary schools in Feni continues to fall. The government has warned that schools with fewer than 50 students may be merged with nearby ones—highlighting the urgent need for action.      

A new five-year project aiming to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable, community-led management of Bangladesh’s Ecologically Critical Areas (ECAs) was launched on Wednesday in Dhaka. The project, with a total financing of $13.5 million, titled "Implementing Ecosystem-based Management in Ecologically Critical Areas in Bangladesh (EbM-ECA Project)," is led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), implemented by the Department of Environment (DoE), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), according to a press release. “This initiative goes beyond biodiversity conservation. It brings together science, indigenous knowledge, and community leadership to restore vital ecosystems while supporting livelihoods,” said Sonali Dayaratne, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh. She stressed the importance of multi-stakeholder coordination and environmental governance for the project’s success. The project will focus on community co-management, innovative restoration practices, and community-led governance models in two biodiversity-rich wetlands—Halda River in Chattogram and Morjat Baor in Jhenaidah—both under pressure from pollution, overuse of resources, and climate change. Speaking as Chief Guest, Environment Secretary Farhina Ahmed highlighted the potential of ecosystem-based co-management as a replicable model for natural resource management and conservation. Study finds cleaner brick kilns practices cut emissions by 20%, energy use by 23% She also acknowledged the GEF’s generous support and reaffirmed commitment to ensuring value for money in the project’s implementation. The project’s components include ecosystem-based co-management systems, pollution control and water quality monitoring, biodiversity conservation, alternative livelihoods for vulnerable communities, and capacity building for government and local stakeholders. Aligning with Bangladesh’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), the project also supports the Global Biodiversity Framework. Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Wednesday called for enhanced action on ensuring the protection of civilians and the safety and security of the peacekeepers, aiming to prepare for the challenges of future peacekeeping. He made the remark while speaking as a panellist at the High-Level Session of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial being held in Berlin, Germany, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the panel discussion, the foreign adviser also stressed partnerships among all stakeholders, including the host government, troops and police contributing countries, peacekeepers on the ground and UN Secretariat at the time of bringing any change in the requirements of existing mandates. He also expressed concern at the resource constraints and called for urgent international attention to address the funding gap.  Bangladesh pledges tech-driven, gender-inclusive UN peacekeeping support The adviser is leading a Bangladesh delegation to the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial being held in Berlin from 13-14 May 2025. A group of Dhaka University  students under the banner of "Students Against Terrorism" brought out a torch procession on the campus Wednesday night, protesting the murder of fellow student Shahriar Alam Shammo. The procession which began at around 8:30pm from TSC  passed through Halpara before ending in front of the vice chancellor’s residence. Protesters demanded a fair investigation and trial into the killing, alongside the resignation of the university's vice chancellor and proctor. Members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and left-leaning student organisations were seen joining the demonstration. At the rally, law student Riyad said, “In the last 9 months, we have seen 3 bodies. One was Tofazzal, another was hanging from a tree, and the latest one was last night – a student of Dhaka University. The DU VC must take responsibility for these murders. We reject the condolence expressed by the DU administration." Protests disrupt Dhaka traffic, worsen commuter suffering He also announced a protest rally to be held at 4pm on Thursday in front of Aparajeyo Bangla. Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court sent three suspects—Tamim Hawladar, 30, Palash Sardar, 30, and Samrat Mallik, 28—to jail in connection with Shammo’s murder. Shammo, a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research and literary and publication secretary of JCD’s AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan on Tuesday night. He was declared dead after being taken to hospital.

The first Hajj flight of Bangladesh Biman from Sylhet Osmani International Airport left on Wednesday for the holy city of Madinah in Saudi Arabia carrying 417 passengers. Among them, 408 were hajj pilgrims and nine were general passengers, said Shah Newaz Majumder,  manager of Bangladesh Biman's Sylhet District. The Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG 237 took off from the airport at 5:25 pm, he added. The flight is scheduled to arrive at 12:15 am (Bangladesh time). Meanwhile, an inauguration ceremony was held before the first Hajj flight took off. Sylhet District Manager Md. Shahnewaz Majumdar presided over the inaugural ceremony, with Shafiul Alam, joint secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, as the chief guest. After the ceremony, a special prayer was offered for all Hajj pilgrims. According to the sources, today's flight will go directly to Madinah while the remaining four flights will go to Jeddah. The second of the four flights will leave on May 23 at 5:25 pm (BG-235), the third flight will leave on May 25 at 1:15 pm (BG-331), the fourth flight will leave on May 26 at 4:45 pm (BG-235) and the last and fifth flight will leave on May 29 at 4:45 pm (BG-235).

Chairperson of BFF women's wing  Mahfuza Akhter Kiron has reportedly  been barred from leaving the country to attend the 75th FIFA Congress in Paraguay. She was reportedly turned back from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early Tuesday as she arrived there for the travel. Two other BFF officials-- President Tabith Awal and General Secretary Imran Hasan Tusher, however, boarded the schedule flight  at 4: pm to attend the FIFA Congress in Paraguay on May 15. Scientists in Australia have identified the oldest known fossil footprints of a reptile-like animal, dated to around 350 million years ago. The discovery suggests that after the first animals emerged from the ocean around 400 million years ago, they evolved the ability to live exclusively on land much faster than previously assumed, reports AP. “We had thought the transition from fin to limb took much longer,” said California State University paleontologist Stuart Sumida, who was not involved in the new research. Previously the earliest known reptile footprints, found in Canada, were dated to 318 million years ago. Ancient wooden spears found in Germany may have been wielded by Neanderthals, a new study suggests The ancient footprints from Australia were found on a slab of sandstone recovered near Melbourne and show reptile-like feet with long toes and hooked claws. Scientists estimate the animal was about 2 1/2 feet (80 centimeters) long and may have resembled a modern monitor lizard. The findings were published Wednesday in Nature. The hooked claws are a crucial identification clue, said study co-author and paleontologist Per Ahlberg at Uppsala University in Sweden. “It’s a walking animal,” he said. Only animals that evolved to live solely on land ever developed claws. The earliest vertebrates -- fish and amphibians – never developed hard nails and remained dependent on watery environments to lay eggs and reproduce. But the branch of the evolutionary tree that led to modern reptiles, birds and mammals – known as amniotes -- developed feet with nails or claws fit for walking on hard ground. “This is the earliest evidence we’ve ever seen of an animal with claws,” said Sumida. At the time the ancient reptile lived, the region was hot and steamy and vast forests began to cover the planet. Australia was part of the supercontinent Gondwana. The fossil footprints record a series of events in one day, Ahlberg said. One reptile scampered across the ground before a light rain fell. Some raindrop dimples partially obscured its trackways. Then two more reptiles ran by in the opposite direction before the ground hardened and was covered in sediment. Fossil “trackways are beautiful because they tell you how something lived, not just what something looked like,” said co-author John Long, a paleontologist at Flinders University in Australia.

A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) on Wednesday seeking a direction to prevent  BNP leader Ishraque Hossain from taking oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The writ also sought action against the Judge of Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal for giving a fraudulent judgement by declaring Ishraque as mayor. Md. Mamunur Rashid, a resident of Dhaka South City Corporation, filed the writ in the relevant branch of the High Court. The secretary of the local government division, law secretary, chief election commissioner, election commission secretary, joint district judge Md. Nurul Islam and Md. Ishraque Hossain were made defendants in the writ petition. The writ petition will be heard by the High Court bench of Justice Md. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury next Sunday, said the petitioner's lawyer Kazi Akbar Ali. Later on April 27, the EC issued a gazette notification declaring him as mayor. On April 28, two Dhaka residents, including writ petitioner Mamunur Rashid, sent legal notices to the authorities concerned to appeal or review the verdict and decree given by the Election Tribunal declaring Ishraque as mayor. The notice also asked to refrain from publishing gazettes in the name of Ishraque and administering oaths to him. Meanwhile, supporters of Ishraque staged a demonstration on Wednesday, demanding that he be sworn in and handed the responsibilities of mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation. Bangladesh has pledged several specialised military and police units to further strengthen the uniformed capabilities of UN peacekeeping operations. Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain announced the new pledges while delivering his country statement at the concluding day of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial held in Berlin on Wednesday. Bangladesh’s pledges also included deployment of 15% female peacekeepers in police units and implementation of an AI-Integrated Camp Surveillance and Response System and installation of 1.8 MW Solar panels in existing missions, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A man was killed and at least 15 others were reportedly injured in a clash between two rival groups in Natai village of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Miajul Hossain, 50, son of Tota Miah of Natai village. He served as the president of the CNG Owners' Association of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila. According to locals and the victim’s family, there had been a longstanding rivalry between the ‘Chander Bari group’ of Natai south union and the ‘Selim Bari group’ over establishing dominance in the area. Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mozzafar Hossain said the clash was triggered by group rivalry. “Tensions have escalated following the death of one person. Members of RAB have been deployed to maintain law and order in the area,” he added. Tensions escalated from Monday night, with several clashes reported between the two groups. On Wednesday, fighting broke out at around 2pm, during which both sides used locally made weapons, including spears and iron rods. ‘Outlaw’ shot dead in Pabna Around 10 to 12 crude bombs were also detonated and at least 15 people were injured, said locals. Around 5:30pm, Miajul, who belonged to the Chander Bari group, was reportedly attacked by members of the rival group. Locals rescued him and took him to Brahmanbaria General Hospital around 6pm. After receiving initial treatment at the emergency unit, he was admitted to the surgery ward, where he died shortly after around 6:15pm. Dr Tajul Islam, an on-duty physician at the emergency department of Brahmanbaria General Hospital, said Miajul was found to have high blood pressure upon arrival at the hospital. He died while undergoing treatment. “He was declared dead after several tests. The exact cause of death can be confirmed after an autopsy,” he added.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has rescheduled its flights to Toronto, London, and Rome as the situation between Pakistan and India returned to normal. The revised schedules will come into effect from May 15, according to a press release from the Biman Bangladesh issued on Tuesday. The flight schedules are as follows: Dhaka–Toronto (BG 305/306), the departure time from Dhaka has been shifted from 3:00am to 3:45am. The departure time from Toronto remains unchanged. For Dhaka–London (BG 201/202), on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the flight will now depart from Dhaka at 7:40am instead of 7:00am. SCB to partner with Biman in the airline's first Regional Treasury Centre On Thursdays, the flight will depart at 8:50am instead of 8:10am. However, departures from London remain unchanged. Dhaka–Rome (BG 355/356), the flight will now depart from Dhaka at 11:30am instead of 10:45am. The departure time from Rome remains unchanged. Biman requested all passengers to report to the airline’s check-in counters in accordance with the new flight schedules.

Excessive daily salt intake is significantly increasing the risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and kidney ailments in Bangladesh.  According to a research, Bangladeshi adults consume an average of 9 grams of salt per day—almost double the World Health Organization’s recommended limit of 5 grams. As a result, around 25,000 people die each year from salt-related health complications, according to public health experts. This information was shared on Wednesday at a discussion meeting organised by the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh to mark World Salt Awareness Week 2025, held at  National Press Club. The meeting was chaired by Professor Dr. Sohel Reza Choudhury, head of the Department of Epidemiology and Research at the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute. Dr. Ahmad Khairul Abrar, coordinator of the Salt Reduction Program at the institute, presented the keynote paper. The presentation highlighted that processed foods are a major source of excessive salt intake. Even when these foods don’t taste salty, they often contain high levels of salt. This hidden salt intake is silently fueling an epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), especially heart disease.  To address this growing crisis, the paper emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive national salt reduction strategy and the mandatory introduction of Front-of-Pack (FoP) labeling on food products. Such easy-to-understand labeling on food packaging would help consumers identify harmful levels of salt, sugar, and fat and make healthier food choices. Prof Sohel  remarked that salt is not just a taste enhancer—when consumed in excess, it becomes a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and other NCDs. He advocated for incorporating lessons on the dangers of excessive salt intake into the national curriculum to promote healthy eating habits from childhood. Mustaq Hasan Md. Iftekhar, founding chairman of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, stated that most processed foods contain high salt levels, but the lack of understandable labeling means consumers are unaware. He stressed the importance of mandatory front-of-pack labeling and accurate nutrition information on packaging, along with regular oversight by relevant authorities. Professor Syed Zakir Hossain, line director of the Non-Communicable Disease Control Program of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said that the government is committed to preventing NCDs and has a coordinated action plan in place. He noted that the NCD Control Program has already initiated work on developing a national salt reduction strategy, expressing hope for its prompt implementation. Professor Dr. Mohammad Shoeb, Member of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, pointed out that although current packaging laws require disclosure of salt, sugar, and fat content, many companies either fail to comply or present the information in unreadable formats. To protect public health, the authority is now revising labeling laws to introduce a user-friendly front-of-pack labeling system. The event was also attended by PM-1 of the NCD Control Branch Dr. Nurul Islam, Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, general secretary of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Dr. Azmeri Sharmin, deputy program manager of the National Nutrition Services, along with representatives from various government and non-government organizations.

Shares of American Eagle Outfitters fell sharply before the opening bell on Wednesday after the retailer withdrew its financial outlook for 2025, citing “macro uncertainty,” and announced $75 million write-down in spring and summer merchandise. The Pittsburgh-based apparel retailer said late Tuesday that it expects first-quarter revenue to decline by five per cent, dropping below $1 billion. Same-store sales—a key indicator of retail performance—are projected to decrease by approximately three per cent, reports AP. The company anticipates an adjusted operating loss of about $68 million for the first quarter, driven by the inventory write-down and increased promotional spending. “Our merchandising strategies did not drive the results we anticipated, leading to higher promotions and excess inventory,” said CEO and Executive Chairman Jay Schottenstein. “As a result, we have taken an inventory write down on spring and summer goods.” Shares of American Eagle tumbled six per cent at the market open on Wednesday following the announcement. Introducing accountability-based operations significantly improved passenger services at the Hazrat Shahjalal International airport, outgoing executive director of the airport Group Captain Kamrul Islam said on Wednesday. “We focused on ensuring accountability during my tenure. As a result, over 85 percent of baggage is now delivered to passengers within the standard time, monitored through automated tracking systems,” he said. Captain Kamrul was addressing a farewell and welcoming ceremony organised by the Aviation and Tourism Journalists’ Forum of Bangladesh (ATJFB) at the Civil Aviation Authority headquarters in the capital. New Executive Director of HSIA Group Captain SM Ragib Samad was also formally welcomed at the event.   ATJFB President Tanzim Anwar presided over the programme, while General Secretary Baten Biplob moderated the event. Islam noted that around 90 percent of passenger complaints are resolved through a dedicated hotline system, helping strengthen service delivery. He expressed optimism that the recent reduction in domestic jet fuel prices would help lower airfares, boosting the domestic aviation market. Islam projected that the aviation sector's contribution to Bangladesh’s GDP could reach 5–6 percent within the next five years if current growth trends continue, up from less than 1 percent at present. The outgoing executive director also expressed hope that the long-anticipated third terminal would become operational this year, significantly expanding HSIA’s handling capacity and facilitating broader economic gains. He thanked the media for their constructive reporting on the aviation sector, especially in light of HSIA’s status as a key point installation (KPI), and urged continued responsible journalism. Newly appointed Executive Director Group Captain Samad pledged to prioritise international-standard services for both passengers and cargo, with transparency and professionalism. “An airport is the first impression of a country. It must reflect the highest standards,” he said. Despite political volatility last year, passenger traffic through HSIA increased by around 7 percent, driven largely by the continued outbound flow of migrant workers. According to official airport data, HSIA handled nearly 12.5 million passengers—both domestic and international—in 2024, compared to 11.7 million in 2023. International passenger movement alone rose by 8 percent.

A man allegedly stabbed his wife to death and injured two daughters before attempting to die by suicide on Tuesday night at Harishankarpur in Kushtia town. The deceased was identified as Meghla Khatun,22, wife of Mamun Ali, a day labourer and also a painter. The couple’s two daughters—four-year-old Kulsum and one-and-a-half-year-old Jannat—were critically injured in the attack. Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia Model Police Station Mosharraf Hossain said  family dispute might be the reason behind the murder. According to family sources, the coupled used to lock into altercation over Meghla’s alleged extramarital affairs. ‘Outlaw’ shot dead in Pabna On the night of the incident, Mamun reportedly caught her speaking to someone on the phone which enraged him. He then attacked Meghla with a sharp weapon, severely injuring her and also attacked his two daughters.  After the attack, Mamun also tried to kill himself by stabbing his own head and neck. Neighbours said that they rushed to the scene and took all four to Kushtia General Hospital in critical condition. Kushtia General Hospital's Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Hossain Imam said that all three [mother and two daughters] were hit on the head with a sharp object. The mother died around 11pm while undergoing treatment, he said. The condition of the two children remains critical, while Mamun is also being treated for serious injuries. No case has been filed yet, said the OC.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday underwent successful surgery on his left eye for a retina problem in Bangkok, Thailand. The operation was conducted at the Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok in the afternoon, said BNP Standing Committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain. “The operation was completed at 4:15pm (Thai time). Alhamdulillah, the surgery on his left eye has been successfully carried out,” he said. Zahid said Fakhrul has been shifted to a cabin at the hospital, where his wife Rahat Ara Begum along with a few close family members is looking after him. “His condition is stable and he is doing well now.” He said the BNP Secretary General will need to stay in the hospital for a few days. “Once the hospital authorities discharge him, he will return to the country.” BNP’s Farroque urges govt to recognise public sentiment, hold early election Earlier on Monday, Fakhrul began experiencing problems with his left eye and quickly consulted eye specialists at the United Hospital in Gulshan, said BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan As the doctors recommended urgent surgery on his left eye due to retina problem, he said the BNP leader travelled to Bangkok that very night on a Thai Airways flight. The expert doctors at the Rutnin Eye Hospital examined his eye and decided to carry out the surgery,” Sayrul said. On behalf of the family members, Sayrul urged the country’s people to pray for the speedy recovery of the BNP Secretary General. Earlier, on April 6, Fakhrul and his wife travelled to Singapore for medical check-ups and necessary treatment.

BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Zainul Abedin Farroque on Wednesday urged the interim government to take immediate steps for holding the national election, sensing the pulse of the country’s people. “We urge you (CA) to understand the pulse of people. They want an election. Make all arrangements for the election soon,” he said while addressing a discussion meeting. The Bangladesh Nationalist Pharmacy Association arranged the programme titled “Specific Roadmap for the Jatiya Sangsad Election and Reforms in the State Structure” at the Jatiya Press Club. Farroque alleged that the cohorts of the Awami League are trying to delay the election as part of a conspiracy against the interim government. "Hasina fled the country, but her associates remain. Identify these cohorts of the Awami League who are making sinister efforts to obstruct the election and take action against them," he said. The BNP leader said those who carried out the movement for the past 16 years, and those who participated in the July-August mass uprising, have only one demand which is a fair election. “We want the election not to bring the BNP to power, but to restore people's right to vote. That is why we have carried out a movement for 16 years," he said. Farroque said their party has long been calling upon the government to arrange the election as early as possible, but they are not taking to the streets like others to realise their demands. Farroque expressed serious concern over the killing of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a DU student and leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.  “Suhrawardy Udyan, next to Dhaka Medical, BUET and DU, is a den for drugs, gambling, immoral activities and muggers. Doesn’t anyone see this?... One of our student leaders was killed. A probe body may be formed—but nothing will come of it,” he bemoaned. The BNP leader also slammed the government for allowing former President Abdul Hamid to leave the country. “Forming a probe committee after his departure is a ridiculous matter… Would an inquiry be able to bring him back?”

A British Bank of America analyst has been sentenced to a decade in a Saudi Arabian prison apparently over a since-deleted social media post, according to his lawyer. The family of Ahmed al-Doush, 41, believes the charges against him stemmed from a deleted 2018 tweet about Sudan that did not mention Saudi Arabia and his relationship with the son of a Saudi critic in exile, Amnesty International said in a statement Tuesday. The father-of-four was sentenced Monday after being accused of violating terrorism and anti-cyber crime laws. “The exact tweet is unknown,” Haydee Dijkstal, al-Doush’s international counsel, posted Tuesday on X. “His trial and detention involved fair trial and due process violations." The lawyer said the U.K. government "should stand firmly against a British national’s imprisonment for allegedly exercising his free speech rights.” The Saudi Arabian government did not respond to requests for comment. “We are supporting a British man who is detained in Saudi Arabia and are in contact with his family and local authorities,” a spokesperson for the Foreign Office in London said in a statement.  Bangladesh to benefit from new SAUDIA fleet expansion Al-Doush, a British national, was arrested in August 2024 at a Riyadh airport where he was waiting for a flight to Manchester, England, with his family following a holiday. His wife has since given birth to their fourth child. “I rarely speak to my husband, but in the few snatched conversations we have managed, it is clear that Ahmed is struggling,” al-Doush’s wife, Amaher Nour, said ahead of her husband’s sentencing, citing his thyroid problems and distress after nine months of detention. The developments came while U.S. President Donald Trump was in Saudi Arabia, where several dual nationals with Western ties and Saudis have been detained in recent years over social media posts that could be viewed as critical to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the country’s de facto ruler. In 2021, a Saudi-American dual national was sentenced to more than 19 years in prison by Saudi Arabia on terrorism-related charges stemming from tweets. Saad Almadi, now 75, was jailed in connection with tweets he had posted over the past several years in the U.S. He was released in 2023 but has been banned from leaving the kingdom. The NBR Reform Unity Council in a press release on Wednesday thanked all NBR employees and officials for their enthusiastic participation in the first day's event of the three- day pen down work abstention to protest split of the revenue authority. In the press release the platform said relevant stakeholders also expressed solidarity with the movement. The NBR Reform Unity Council, the press release said, has long been calling for a modern and sustainable reform of the national revenue system. Officials have expressed deep concern over the recently promulgated  revenue ordinance, which they claim was imposed without consulting the thousands of officers and employees in the customs and taxation services—despite being key stakeholders in the reform process. They also noted that the government-formed reform committee’s recommendations have not yet been made public or subjected to any meaningful discussion. The council fears that implementing the ordinance without transparency or stakeholder engagement will lead to chaos within the revenue administration. Bangladesh signs deal to receive $1.3 billion IMF loan: BB Governor In the press release, the NBR Reform Unity Council apologised to taxpayers and service seekers for any inconvenience caused. The council emphasised that this temporary sacrifice is aimed at safeguarding the national interest and ensuring sustainable reform in the revenue system. The protest action will continue on Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 3pm. However, international passenger services, export operations, and national budget preparation activities will remain outside the purview of the strike to avoid disruption to essential services like today. In a related development, the press release said, several key members of the BCS Customs and VAT Association—including the vice president, secretary general, treasurer, and joint secretary general—have resigned from the association’s executive committee in protest over institutional indifference to service-related issues and other concerns. Similarly, office bearers of the BCS (Taxation) Association have also started resigning from their respective posts in phases, it claimed. The growing unrest underscores the urgent need for the government to initiate an inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure meaningful and sustainable revenue reform.

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent three people to jail in a case filed over the killing of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Dhaka University (DU) student and a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order when police produced them before the court with a plea to send them to prison. Earlier on Tuesday, police arrested the trio identified as Tamim Hawladar, 30, Palash Sardar, 30 and Samrat Mallik, 28—from the capital. Chhatra Dal stages protest over murder of DU student Shammo Shamyo, a student of the 2018–19 sessions at the Institute of Education and Research, and Literary and publication secretary of Chhatra Dal’s AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed in an attack at Suhrawardy Udyan near the campus. Later, he was taken to the hospital where the doctors on duty declared him dead. A case was filed against 10-12 people with Shahbagh Police Station.  

Two Madrasha  students, who went missing , were found dead on Wednesday in a pond at Palashbari of Ashulia of Savar, on the outskirts of the capital. The deceased were identified as Limon Molla, 11, son of Ratan Molla of Pabna district and Manik Sardar, 9, son of Ziaul Sardar of Jamalpur district. Saifulla Akanda, sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station, said they went missing on Tuesday after they had left home for going to madrasha. 2 workers die in explosion at Rahimafrooz factory in Savar Local people spotted the floating bodies of the two boys and called the national emergency number 999. On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Suhrawardy Hospital morgue. Police suspected that they might have drowned in the pond, said SI Saifulla.  

Bangladesh’s capital markets witnessed yet another day of decline on Wednesday, as both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) continued to fall, with all key indices ending lower and the majority of listed shares losing value. This marks the third consecutive day of downward momentum, following losses in the previous two sessions. At the DSE, the benchmark index DSEX shed 38 points, while the Shariah-based DSES fell by 10 points. The DS30 index, which tracks blue-chip stocks, lost 7 points. Out of the 399 companies traded during the session, 292 saw price declines. Only 61 registered gains, while prices of 46 issues remained unchanged. The downtrend was observed across all categories of shares – A, B, and Z. In the A-category, which consists of fundamentally strong dividend-paying stocks, 153 out of 218 companies closed lower, while 39 gained and 26 remained unchanged. Mutual funds also faced pressure, with 21 out of 36 declining. Only 3 funds saw an uptick, while 12 remained unchanged. Renata Limited led the segment with shares worth Tk 4.96 crore traded. Turnover at the DSE also dropped, amounting to Tk 294 crore for the day – down from Tk 343 crore in the previous session. City General Insurance topped the gainers’ list with a 9.91 percent rise, while NRB Bank ended at the bottom, losing over 6.77 percent. Decline in Chattogram as Well The bearish trend extended to the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE), where the overall index dipped by 71 points at the close of trading. Out of 196 traded companies, 127 declined, 44 advanced and 25 remained unchanged. Turnover at the CSE stood at Tk 11.12 crore, a notable rise from Tk 7.67 crore in the previous session. Sonali Life Insurance emerged as the top gainer at the CSE with a 10 percent price increase, while KDS Accessories Limited saw the sharpest fall, shedding over 9.82 percent. Both bourses now await a possible reversal amid cautious investor sentiment and a challenging economic backdrop.

Different parts of the capital, including Gulistan, Paltan, Shahbagh and Kakrail, experienced severe traffic congestions on Wednesday as students from Jagannath University and various nursing institutes staged separate protest marches. In the afternoon, several hundred nursing students blocked Shahbagh intersection, one of Dhaka’s key points, triggering severe traffic congestions and causing immense suffering to commuters. Vehicular movement came to a halt, forcing many to walk long distances or change routes to reach their destinations. Chhatra Dal stages protest over murder of DU student Shammo Besides, Jagannath University (JnU) students clashed with police near Kakrail as they attempted to march towards the Chief Adviser’s official residence, Jamuna, to press home their three-point demand. Witnesses said the students began their ‘Long March’ from the campus around 12:30pm, passing through Tatibazar, Gulistan, Zero Point and Matsya Bhaban intersections. Police intercepted them near the Kakrail Mosque, leading to a scuffle.

Emphasising the need for boosting bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Vietnam, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang has called for the removal of tariff and non-tariff barriers, signing of trade agreements and building stronger economic partnerships between the two countries. Phan Thi Thang made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing the Vietnam-Bangladesh Business Forum 2025, organised by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) at a hotel in Dhaka. A 16-member Vietnamese business delegation, led by Deputy Minister Thang, participated in the forum. Highlighting trade potential in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, pharmaceuticals, fisheries and ICT, the Vietnamese Deputy Minister noted that both nations currently impose high tariffs on each other’s products. Russia will help Vietnam to join BRICS bloc of developing nations Thi Thang stressed that easing tariff and non-tariff barriers as well as improving transport, communication and logistics infrastructure could unlock major opportunities in unexplored sectors. She also recommended strengthening information exchange and mutual cooperation between business communities of the two countries. Three of the songs have been turned into music videos, produced by Live2Web and Affan Aziz Pritul, and the album artwork was made by Rakib Rahman. Recording took place at Studio Kokil and Butter Records, with post-production handled at Butter Records. The lyrical videos of the remaining tracks will be released in stages, beginning with the music video for 'Dami' on May 9. The second music video is scheduled for release the following week, with more to follow. Bonfire is partnering with the band for music distribution. To celebrate the release of 'Bhalobashashomogro', Chirkutt also plans to organize a special solo concert in the near future. Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on Tuesday staged protests at Dhaka University (DU) seeking justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a DU student and a leader of the organisation.  Three held over killing of DU student in Suhrawardy Udyan Shammo, a student of the 2018–19 sessions at the Institute of Education and Research, and Literary and Publication Secretary of Chhatra Dal’s AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed to death by a miscreant at Suhrawardy Udyan near the campus. The rally which began at the base of the Raju Sculpture paraded through the Central Mosque, Madhu’s Canteen, and the Arts Building, ending in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence with a brief gathering. Leaders and activists from various JCD units including Dhaka University, New Market Thana, Titumir College, and Kobi Nazrul College participated in the rally. Addressing the gathering, Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir demanded the resignation of the DU Vice-Chancellor, Proctor, and the Home Affairs Adviser, holding them responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation on and around the campus. “As the chief guardian of the university, the Vice-Chancellor cannot escape responsibility for this murder. His failure has been exposed by two violent incidents in quick succession after the student movement. The Proctor must also resign,” Nasir said. “We also call for the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser as another student named Parvez from a private university was recently killed in a similar knife attack. These incidents shows a collapse of public safety,” he added. Following the Zuhr prayers, Shammo’s namaz-e-janaza was held at the university’s central mosque. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, Treasurer Prof M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and Proctor Associate Prof Saifuddin Ahmed attended the funeral along with DU teachers and students. BNP’s Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Student Affairs Secretary Rokibul Islam Bakul, Shammo’s elder brother Anwaruzzaman Sagor, and several Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were also present. Later, Shammo’s body was taken to his ancestral home in Sirajganj for burial following a second funeral prayer, family members said. Dhaka University has declared Thursday (May 15) as a day of mourning. The university administration also held an emergency meeting attended by representatives from the Ministry of Public Works, Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Department of Narcotics Control, and relevant DU departments. Several decisions were taken regarding safety measures in and around Suhrawardy Udyan. A seven-member investigation committee, led by Faculty of Arts Dean Prof Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, has been formed to probe the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its findings within three working days. Only 13 percent of dried fish produced in Bangladesh were found to contain traces of pesticides, while the remaining 87 percent are considered safe for consumption, according to findings of a new study.  Researchers noted that even in the dried fish samples where pesticide residues were detected, the levels dropped significantly after cooking.  2-month fishing ban in Padma-Meghna to end tonight The study, based on samples collected from five major dried fish-producing regions — Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Dubla Char, Chalan Beel (Natore), and Sunamganj — analyzed 405 samples in total. It found an average of 13 percent pesticide usage across the selected samples. The study further revealed consumption preferences among regions.In Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, Churi shutki is the most consumed variety (57% and 55% respectively) while in Chalan Beel, Taki shutki dominates (37%), and in Dubla Char, Loitta shutki is the preferred choice (46%). The findings were presented on Wednesday  at a seminar titled “Presentation of Research Results” of  organised by the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) at its headquarters in Shahbagh. BFSA Member Dr Mohammad Mostafa chaired the seminar, while BFSA Chairman Jakaria attended as chief guest. Dr Md Ariful Islam, senior scientific officer at the Shrimp Research Centre under the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, presented the research findings. Panel discussants included Prof Dr Md Tajul Islam Chowdhury of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, and Dr Md Nazmul Bari, Principal Scientific Officer at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Prof Dr Mohammad Shoeb, also a BFSA member, delivered the welcome address. Jakaria stated that the research was part of seven studies undertaken during FY 2022–23. "The results reflect the researchers’ findings and not the official position of the BFSA. These do not represent the national picture, but provide limited insight. If higher levels of concern are found in preliminary studies, BFSA will propose broader research to relevant stakeholders," he said. He further warned that the use of pesticides in dried fish would be treated as a punishable offense. Stressing the need for clear definitions, he said, “Many practices are socially considered adulteration but may not be scientifically so. It’s crucial to define what qualifies as adulteration. The use of pesticides in dried fish should be treated as such.” In his welcome speech, Dr Shoeb noted that certain banned pesticides are still being used in dried fish. He referenced a recent Basel Convention proposal that seeks to prohibit 10 such pesticides, two of which are currently in use in Bangladesh. Dr Ariful Islam stated that 60 percent of the country’s protein intake comes from fish and meat. “Most dried fish producers lack formal education, leading to improper processing. Pesticides are often used when sunlight is insufficient — typically between October and March,” he said. He added that most pesticide use is associated with sun-drying processes. Of 260 core samples analysed, only 13 percent contained detectable pesticide levels. Daily per capita consumption of dried fish by region was found to be  15.72g in Cox’s Bazar, 14.48g Chattogram, 7.84g in Sunagang, 9.56g Chalan Beel, dubla Char in 12.22g.  Higher concentrations of endosulfan sulfate were detected in samples from all five regions, while smaller amounts of dieldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and beta-endosulfan were also found. Dr Nazmul Bari highlighted the widespread use of polythene in dried fish processing and called for inclusion of microplastics in future studies. He also advocated for transitioning from traditional sun-drying methods to mechanical drying for improved safety. Speakers noted that soaking dried fish in water or saltwater for a few hours can reduce harmful effects. Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman has rejoined Delhi Capitals for the rest of the IPL 2025 season as a replacement for Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has withdrawn due to personal reasons. He signed the deal with Delhi for INR 6 crore, the highest-ever amount that a Bangladesh cricketer is set to get from IPL. A Dhaka court on Wednesday showed former ministers Anisul Huq, Amir Hossain Amu, Hasanul Haque Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, and three others arrested in seven separate cases over July movement. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhazur Rahman passed the order after hearing separate petitions.  Apex court declares appointment of administrator and board at Nagad illegal The rest of the accused shown arrested are former minister Shahjahan Khan, former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and former MP Kazi Moniur Islam Monu.   Besides, former Home Affairs Secretary Jahangir Alam was placed on a two-day remand in a  murder case. Of them, Anisul was shown arrested in three cases, Amu, Menon, Inu, Zunaid in two cases, Monu in three cases, and Shahjahan in one case. All the cases were related to the murders and attempts to murder. Earlier, the prosecution appealed to show them arrested in the cases while the court set May 14 for hearing. On April 12, a petition for placing former home secretary on 5-day remand was submitted in Meherdi murder case while the court set May 14 for hearing. Though the defendant’s lawyer Farzana Yeasmin Rakhi appealed for bail, the court granted two-day remand rejecting the prayer. According to the case statement, victim Mehedi participated in a procession on August 5 last year and was shot in the National Burn Institute area. Later, he was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College where physicians declared him dead. Migrant laborers from various countries including  Bangladesh, India, and Nepal have suffered avoidable deaths while working in Saudi Arabia, according to a report released Wednesday by Human Rights Watch. The advocacy organization, alongside another rights group, FairSquare, published separate investigations highlighting fatal workplace incidents and work-related health issues affecting foreign laborers. The groups say these deaths stem from causes including electrocution, road accidents, and falls, and argue they could have been prevented. HRW asks ICC to suspend Afghanistan's membership Both reports allege Saudi authorities routinely misclassify the causes of death and fail to carry out proper investigations. This, they say, deprives bereaved families of the compensation they are due and leaves them without answers about how their loved ones died. The investigations come as Saudi Arabia advances massive infrastructure projects linked to its Vision 2030 initiative and preparations for hosting the 2034 men’s soccer World Cup, as well as building the high-profile Neom city. Rights advocates warn that more migrant worker deaths could follow unless protective measures are implemented. Human Rights Watch cited the case of a Bangladeshi worker who was electrocuted while on the job. According to the organization, the employer refused to release the body, telling the family they would only be compensated if they accepted a local burial. In another case, a family reportedly waited nearly 15 years before receiving compensation from the Saudi government. “It’s very urgent that the Saudi authorities and FIFA put in place basic labor rights protections,” said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch. Saudi officials did not respond to a request for comment on the report. FairSquare’s investigation focused on the deaths of 17 Nepali contractors in Saudi Arabia over the past 18 months. The group warned that in the absence of transparency and accountability, “thousands of unexplained deaths” among low-paid foreign workers are likely. Saudi Arabia has long faced scrutiny over labor rights violations and wage theft, particularly in connection with Vision 2030 — its wide-ranging economic diversification plan. FIFA, in a statement shared with the AP, referred to a letter it sent to Human Rights Watch last month defending Saudi Arabia's selection as host of the 2034 World Cup. The letter pointed to the kingdom’s pledges to implement a workers’ welfare system and bolster labor protections in collaboration with the International Labor Organization. Saudi Arabia is not alone in facing criticism over treatment of migrant workers ahead of major sporting events. Similar accusations were leveled against Qatar prior to the 2022 World Cup, with rights groups citing thousands of unexplained deaths among foreign laborers there as well. Worden warned that the situation in Saudi Arabia could be even more severe, as the 2034 tournament is expected to involve more teams and therefore require greater construction of stadiums and infrastructure.  

A series of intense Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip early Wednesday left at least 60 people dead, including 22 children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry and local hospital sources. Nearly 50 of the fatalities occurred in the northern area of Jabaliya, with another 10 reported in the southern city of Khan Younis. Experts from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification have warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, with nearly 500,000 Palestinians at risk of starvation and another 1 million facing extreme food insecurity. For over 10 weeks, Israel has blocked the entry of food, medicine, and essential supplies into Gaza while continuing military operations. The Appellate Division on Wednesday set June 1 for delivering its judgment on  the appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami seeking restoration of its registration as a political party.  Ex-Jamaat leader Barrister Abdur Razzaq passes away A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed passed the order after hearing the law point arguments from both sides. Senior Advocate Ehsan Siddique and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir stood for the petition. On October 22, 2024,  the Appellate Division revived a previously dismissed appeal by the Jamaat-e-Islami, seeking to regain its registration as a political party. On 1 August 2013, the High Court declared Jamaat's registration as a political party illegal following the disposal of a writ petition.  Jamaat backs proportional representation, bicameral parliament, 2-term limit for PM On December 7, 2018, the Election Commission issued a gazette notification cancelling Jamaat's registration. Jamaat-e-Islami later appealed challenging the High Court verdict. As Jamaat’s lead lawyer was absent during the appeal hearing, a six-member Appellate Division bench dismissed the appeal in November, 2023,  thereby upholding the High Court's ruling that declared Jamaat-e-Islami's registration as a political party invalid. Meanwhile, then Awami League government banned Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir on August 1, 2024. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification banning Jamaat, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and other affiliated organizations under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has dismissed allegations of share trading against its Commissioner Md Mohsin Chowdhury, asserting that the claims are baseless and misleading. According to information from the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL), a Beneficiary Owners (BO) account exists in Mohsin’s name, which currently holds 2,231 shares of Beximco Limited. BSEC rules prohibit its officials or their family members from engaging in share transactions. The existence of a BO account in the name of a sitting commissioner has sparked criticism in some quarters. Stock investors demand BSEC Chairman’s immediate removal Responding to the matter, BSEC Director and Spokesperson Abul Kalam clarified that the BO account was opened before Mohsin assumed his role as commissioner. “Following his appointment, he instructed the concerned brokerage house to sell all shares and close the account,” he said. But the Beximco shares could not be sold and the account could not be closed due to the ongoing floor price restrictions.  Abul Kalam also said no share transactions have been carried out through the BO account since Mohsin took office. In a statement issued on Wednesday, BSEC said Commissioner Mohsin opened the BO account in 2011 for personal investment purposes. Since joining the commission in June 2024, he has remained uninvolved in any form of share trading, the regulator said, terming the allegations “fabricated and misleading.” Regarding the 2,231 Beximco shares in the BO account, valued at approximately Tk 2.45 lakh, the commission explained that the floor price mechanism prevented their sale. Under CDBL regulations, the account cannot be closed without being emptied. BSEC strongly refuted the accusations, labelling them as unfounded and aimed at creating confusion.  

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur has said Bangladesh has signed a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to receive the next installments under the ongoing loan programme. Joining a press conference virtually from Dubai, Dr Mansur said the IMF is set to release the next two tranches totalling $1.3 billion of the $4.7 billion loan package by June 2025. He hinted at a more flexible exchange rate regime for the US dollar, adding that the market will remain unaffected as there is an adequate supply of dollars at present. IMF finally agrees to release $1.3bn loan tranche for Bangladesh in June Responding to a query, the Governor assured that easing the exchange rate will not fuel inflation, as the country’s macroeconomic stability has already been restored. “Bangladesh will receive a total of $3.5 billion in foreign loans from international agencies, excluding the IMF, by June 2025,” he added. Dr Mansur said the funding will come from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the International Infrastructure Development Bank. Issuing a caution against market syndicates, the Governor said Bangladesh Bank will actively monitor the foreign exchange market. He further noted that the central bank has kept a reserve of foreign currency to ensure market stability. Bangladesh’s economy holds glimmers of hope amid IMF-ADB’s lower growth forecasts: Experts Rejecting claims of an unusual spike in foreign exchange rates, Dr Mansur stated that banks and authorised exchange houses are required to submit exchange rate reports to the central bank twice a day. He reaffirmed that Bangladesh Bank will closely monitor the currency market and intervene by selling dollars when necessary to curb any abnormal rise in the dollar rate.  

The online GD (general diary) service in all police stations under Chattogram range and Chattagram Metropolitan Police (CMP) will start from Thursday. This initiative has been taken following a directive from the Chief Adviser to simplify and digitise police services, said a Police Headquarters statement issued on Wednesday. Earlier, only reports related to lost and found items could be filed online.  Police cannot be a killer force: IGP  Now all types of GDs can be submitted online in these areas, according to the statement. The online GD service was first introduced on a pilot basis at all police stations under Sylhet Metropolitan Police and Chandpur District Police on April 15, 2025. The service will be gradually expanded to other police ranges and metropolitan areas across the country, it said. To access the service, users have been requested to download the ‘Online GD’ app from the Google Play Store and complete a one-time registration. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday highlighted the critical need to develop the port city of Chattogram, saying that enhanced infrastructure, particularly road communications, would naturally follow if Chittagong Port is modernised and expanded. The Chief Adviser made the remarks when he was briefed about the traffic situation of Oxygen-Hathazari road leading to the Chittagong University campus. "The betterment of Chattogram means the betterment of the country. Without it, Bangladesh cannot move ahead. The development of Chattogram will inevitably improve road infrastructure in Chattogram city and district," said the Chief Adviser. Sayed Moinul Hasan, Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways, briefed the Chief Adviser on the current condition of the crucial 16-kilometre stretch of road. On average, he said, some 31,955 vehicles use the road every day and 76 percent of them were two-wheelers, slowing traffic movement. Prof Yunus seeks coordinated, effective steps to get rid of Ctg waterlogging Nine markets along the road also create traffic congestion, he said, suggesting their removals. Moinul Hasan said a separate road from Solosohar using railway land could also reduce the pressure on the road. The Roads and Highways Chief Engineer also suggested the construction of elevated highways to ease traffic congestion on Oxygen-Hathazari roads. The Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) has formed a 60-member special force to ensure quick response during major disasters like earthquakes in Dhaka, said its Director General Brigadier General Md Zahid Kamal. Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a two-day training workshop organised for the members of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB), he said special teams comprising 20 members are also being formed in each divisional city to strengthen disaster response capabilities. The DG said the newly formed special force comprising selected firefighters from across the country will be provided with necessary training and equipment at Purbachal in the capital. “This team will be ready to respond quickly during major fires or earthquakes,” he added. Considering the earthquake risks, the Fire Service’s operational division will be relocated to Mirpur, he said. Among others, CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal, General Secretary MM Badsha, Joint Secretary Niaz Ahmed Labu, Finance Secretary Aminul Islam, Organising Secretary Sajjad Mahmud Khan, Office Secretary Wasim Siddiqui, Training Secretary Jasim Uddin, FSCD Director (Training, Planning and Development) Lt Col MA Azad Anwar, and Senior Staff Officer of the media cell Md Shahjahan Shikder were present. Bangladesh sends fire service rescue team to Myanmar “We may also be affected during earthquakes, but we cannot let the operational rescue team be affected. Therefore, we are separating the commanding force and shifting the training and development directorate to Purbachal,” the DG said. He said the current manpower, equipment, and number of stations in Dhaka and Chattogram are not sufficient compared to the population. “We need to increase these to respond effectively during disasters.” The DG said proposals were sent to relevant ministries to include fire safety awareness in school textbooks though it could not be added this year. He said 8 to 10 fire stations in Dhaka could be damaged during a major earthquake.  “Fire Service is a service-oriented organization that works under risk to save lives and property.” Referring to Fire Service's participation in rescue efforts in Myanmar alongside the Bangladesh Army, he noted the appreciation and recognition they received for their professionalism. To ease healthcare facility in the region, two new hospitals will be set up in Hathazari and Karnaphuli upazilas of Chattogram district as a plan in this regard is underway, said Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum on Wednesday. Patients from Rangamati and Kaptai will be able to get service in Hathazari while those from Patiya, Satkania and Chandanaish will be served from Karnaphuli facility,” she said. The Chittagong University campus was awash with emotion and pride as graduates and teachers warmly welcomed Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus upon his arrival who attended its 5th Convocation as the chief guest on Wednesday. As he made his way towards the podium, a wave of cheers erupted from both sides. Graduates, their faces lit with excitement and pride, expressed heartfelt gratitude and admiration. A former faculty member of CU’s Economics Department and a Nobel Laureate, Prof Yunus' return to the campus was hailed as a historic moment. In recognition of his contributions, the Chittagong University conferred upon him an honorary Doctorate of Literature (D.Litt) degree. In an emotionally driven historic reunion, Chief Adviser Professor Yunus delivered his convocation speech revisiting his days in the University and shared how he began the journey of microcredit. "It's a historic reunion. A big chapter has ended while a new chapter begins," he told the graduates. Prof Yunus said it is a matter of great joy for him to return to this campus again after many years. "We have the capacity to build a new world that we want. We will be able to build the world the way we want to build." Recalling the background of the establishment of Grameen Bank, the Chief Adviser said the ongoing civilisation is a civilisation of a destructive economy. "The economy we established is an economy of business, not of people," he said, adding that the business-oriented civilisation is a suicidal one, which will not sustain. Prof Yunus said he is delighted to be here in Chittagong University after a long time, recalling that he joined the CU as a teacher in 1972. He highlighted the 1974 famine that hit the country and how Grameen Bank was formed to help the famine-hit people in Chattogram.

Police on Wednesday foiled a long march of Jagannath University(JnU) students heading towards the Chief Adviser’s official residence Jamuna in the capital’s Kakrail area, to press home their three-point demand. Witnesses said several hundred students started their scheduled ‘Long March’ towards Jamuna from the campus around 12:30 pm. The procession crossed Tatibazar intersection, Gulistan intersection, Zero point intersection and Matshya Bhaban in Kakrail. Police obstructed the demonstrators near Kakrail mosque , leading to a scuffle. As the protesters attempted to break through the police barricade the law enforcers charged batons, said witnesses. NBR staff announce 3-day work abstention protesting ‘secret’ split decision They dispersed the protesters after firing sound grenades, tear gas shells and used water cannons.Following the police action, the protesters moved towards the Matsya Bhaban intersection and then gathered at Shahbagh. Participants in the march claimed that at least 11 people including teachers were injured during the police action. A teacher identified as Nasir Uddin was also among the injured. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.Their demands are—to ensure 70 housing scholarships starting from the 2025-26 fiscal year, until proper housing facilities are implemented.The proposed full budget for Jagannath University for the 2025-26 fiscal year must be approved without any cuts.
