Former DU Vice-Chancellor Arefin Siddique passes away
Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique passed away on Thursday night, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence and leadership. He was 72.
He breathed his last at 10:45 pm while undergoing treatment at the Neurosurgery Department of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital, his brother Saifullah Siddique told UNB over phone.
Dr Siddique's namaz-e-janaza will be held at Dhanmondi Idgah Mosque after the Jumma prayers on Friday. Later, he will be buried beside his parents at Azimpur Graveyard.
Dr Arefin Siddique’s condition “extremely critical”
Despite receiving intensive medical care, he could not recover after being placed on life support.
On 6 March, Prof Siddique withdrew cash from a bank booth before heading to Dhaka Club in Ramna.
While conversing with others, he suddenly collapsed. His family members reported that he was immediately taken to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital, where doctors placed him in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
As his condition deteriorated, he was put on life support.
Medical sources confirmed that he suffered a sudden brain stroke, which led to critical neurological failure.
Born on October 26, 1953, in Dhaka, Professor Siddique hailed from Raipura Upazila in Narsingdi district.
He obtained his master's degree from the department of Mass Communication and Journalism at DU in 1975 and did PhD on televised teaching from the University of Mysore of India in 1985.
He joined DU Mass Communication and Journalism department in 1980.
Dr Siddique also served as acting dean of Social Science Faculty and as senate and syndicate member.
He served as the Chairman of DU’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism before being appointed the 27th Vice-Chancellor in 2009, a position he held until 2017.
After completing his tenure, he returned to teaching at his department until his retirement in June 2020.
Beyond academia, Prof Siddique played an active role in various professional and cultural organisations.

He served as the President and General Secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association.
Besides, he was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and a trustee of the National Museum.

Former Minister Kamal Ibne Yusuf’s wife dies
Chowdhury Shaila Kamal, wife of the late BNP leader and former minister Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, passed away on Wednesday morning. She was 78.
Shaila Kamal breathed her last at 5:30 am while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, her daughter and Dhaka North city unit Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal convener Chowdhury Nayeba Yusuf told UNB.
Her first Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Gulshan Azad Mosque in Dhaka.
Apex Group chairman Manzur Elahi dies
Later, her body was taken to Faridpur, where her second Janaza was held at the local Kamalapur Moez Uddin High School High School ground. After the Janaza, she was laid to rest at her family graveyard.
He husband Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf passed away on December 10, 2020 at the age of 80 due to complications from coronavirus.
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep sorrow at her demise.
In a condolence message, he prayed for the salvation of departed soul and conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the grieving family.

Apex Group chairman Manzur Elahi dies
Syed Manzur Elahi, chairman of Apex Group and former adviser to a caretaker government, passed away on Wednesday morning. He was 83.
He breathed his last at 9:31am (Bangladesh time) in Singapore while undergoing treatment at a hospital, said family members.
The businessman had been suffering from various age-related ailments.
Elahi was one of the pioneers of Bangladesh’s leather export industry and played a key role in introducing locally produced leather footwear to the global market. His company, Apex, holds a significant position in both local and international footwear markets.
Elahi completed his B.A. from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, and later earned a master's degree in Economics from the University of Dhaka.
National Award-winning filmmaker Zahidur Rahim Anjan passes away
In 1962, he moved from Kolkata to Dhaka and in 1972, he resigned from his job and began working as an agent for a French leather importer.
After leaving his career in multinational corporations, he ventured into the leather business and became a successful entrepreneur.
In 1972, he established Manzur Industries and began selling leather on a commission basis.
Four years later, in 1976, he acquired state-owned Orient Tannery and founded Apex Tannery.

Ambassador Mohiuddin Ahmed passes away at 88
Former ambassador and freedom fighter Mohiuddin Ahmed has passed away at the age of 88.
He breathed his last at a city hospital on Sunday due to multiple age-related complications, said his daughter Parveen Ahmed, a journalist and communication consultant.
His namaz-e-janaza was held on Sunday night at Masjid ut Taqwa in Dhanmondi, following which he was laid to rest in his mother's grave at Azimpur graveyard on Monday morning.
National Award-winning filmmaker Zahidur Rahim Anjan passes away
Mohiuddin Ahmed is survived by wife, Dr Hasina Ahmed; his daughters, Parveen and Nasmeen Ahmed; his son, Asif Ahmed; and two granddaughters.
Born in Raipura, Narsingdi, Mohiuddin pursued his higher education at Dhaka University, where he earned a degree in economics followed by a master's in international relations.
He joined the Foreign Service in 1963, embarking on an illustrious diplomatic career.
Over the years, he held key positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including acting foreign secretary, deputy chief of protocol, director of general administration, and additional foreign secretary.
He served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Nepal and Senegal (with concurrent accreditation to Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, and Guinea Conakry). His postings also included deputy high commissioner in London and assignments at Bangladesh missions in New Delhi and Jakarta.
A patriot at heart, Mohiuddin Ahmed defected in favour of Bangladesh while serving as trade commissioner at Pakistan’s Hong Kong mission during the Liberation War. He was also a veteran of the 1952 Language Movement.
Beyond his diplomatic service, Mohiuddin contributed significantly to the financial sector. He served as a director at Janata Bank and Bank Asia, as well as Nabil Bank in Nepal. He also held an advisory role at Rangs Group.
Before joining the Foreign Service, Mohiuddin was a writer and photographer, contributing to the British Information Service and local publications such as the daily Ittefaq and the weekly Begum magazine.

National Award-winning filmmaker Zahidur Rahim Anjan passes away
National Film Award-winning director Zahidur Rahim Anjan passed away on Monday night while undergoing treatment in Bengaluru, India. He was 60.
Anjan breathed his last at 8:30 pm, his younger brother Sazzadur Rahim told the media.
He had been in Bengaluru since January for a liver transplant, which was conducted on February 19.
He succumbed to post-operative complications, his brother said.
His family has been in contact with Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki regarding necessary formalities, which may take two to three days to complete, he informed.
Anjan had been suffering from liver complications for several years and was receiving treatment at Sparsh Hospital in Bengaluru.
Last week, doctors decided on a liver transplant, but his condition deteriorated after the surgery, and he was placed on life support before passing away.
He was the son of Language Movement veteran Mizanur Rahim and the husband of noted writer Shaheen Akhtar.
Anjan made his directorial debut with the film ‘Meghmallar’ (2014), based on eminent writer Akhtaruzzaman Elias’ short story ‘Raincoat’. The film earned him the National Film Award for Best Director and Best Dialogue Writer.
BNP Vice-Chairman Abdullah Al Noman passes away
His latest project, ‘Chander Amaboshya’, was completed with government funding. Although initially planned for release last year, it was postponed due to his health and the overall situation in the country; but he had recently released the film’s poster and was eager to bring it to audiences soon.
A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, Anjan was also a faculty member at Stamford University Bangladesh.
An active figure in Bangladesh's film movement, he served as the former president of the Short Film Forum and contributed significantly to the country's independent cinema scene.
His colleagues and admirers in the film industry took to social media to express their grief and share memories, following the news of his demise.

BNP Vice-Chairman Abdullah Al Noman passes away
BNP Vice-Chairman and former minister Abdullah Al Noman passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday morning. He was 82.
He breathed his last around 6 am at Square Hospitals Ltd in Dhaka, his personal assistant Nurul Azim Hiru told UNB.
Hiru said that freedom fighter Noman was taken to the hospital early in the morning as was feeling unwell. But physicians declared him dead upon arrival.
He is survived by a son, a daughter, grandsons-daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
In separate condolence messages, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock and sorrow at his passing.
They prayed for the salvation of his departed soul and conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family.
The news of his death has left BNP leaders and activists in Chattogram in shock.
His first Namaz-e-Janaza was held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament and the Namaz-e-Janaza was held in front of the Nayapaltan party office in the capital after Asr prayers.

Earlier in the first Namaz-e-Janaza, BNP standing committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, vice chairman Abdus Salam Pintu, joint secretary general Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie and Bikalpa Dhara Secretary General Major (Retd) Abdul Mannan were, among others, were present.
His body will be taken to Chattogram.
Noman was first elected as an MP from the Kotwali constituency of the port city in 1991.
He served as the Fisheries Minister after winning the 1991 national election and later as the Food Minister following his victory in 2001.
A native of Gohira village in Raozan upazila, Noman was scheduled to address a party programme in the city today (Tuesday).

Sara Mahmud, widow of martyred intellectual Altaf Mahmud, passes away
Sara Mahmud, the widow of martyred music composer and Language Movement icon and martyred freedom fighter Altaf Mahmud, passed away Sunday evening at the age of 75.
This was confirmed by her only daughter Shawan Mahmud, and other family sources, Sara Mahmud breathed her last at 6:25 pm.
According to her son-in-law and Obscure band frontman Sayed Hasan Tipu, Sara Mahmud had undergone surgery a few days prior after fracturing her hip joint. She was recovering well after the stitches were removed; however, she had been experiencing breathing difficulties for the past four days and was also suffering from kidney disease.
According to family sources, her namaz-e-janaza will be held after Zohr prayers on Monday at Noor Nagar Jame Masjid in Eskaton. She will then be buried at the capital’s Banani Graveyard.
Young actor Shahbaz Sunny dies
Sara Mahmud dedicated her life to preserving the legacy of her husband Altaf Mahmud, who was abducted by the Pakistan Army on August 30, 1971. Like his contemporary intellectuals Shahidullah Kaiser, Munier Chowdhury, and Zahir Raihan, he never returned.
Following Altaf Mahmud’s disappearance, Sara Mahmud fought a lifelong battle to raise their only daughter, Shawan Mahmud, while keeping her husband's memory and legacy alive.
She served at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) for 34 years, holding the position of Director of the Drama and Film Department in her esteemed career.
Her younger sister, Shimul Yousuf, and brother-in-law, Nasiruddin Yousuff, are eminent theatre personalities in the country.

Young actor Shahbaz Sunny has passed away.
Actor Ziaul Faruq Apurba confirmed Sunny’s death through a Facebook post on Monday morning.
Apurba wrote, "Actor Shahbaz Sunny is no longer with us. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un," expressing his condolences and seeking prayers for the departed actor.

Former CEC Abdur Rouf passes away
Former Justice and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Md Abdur Rouf has passed away while undergoing treatment at a city hospital. He was 95.
Rouf breathed his last at 10am on Sunday while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit at private Insaf Barakah Kidney and General Hospital Dhaka, said his personal assistant Md Tawhid.
As per the family's wish, Rouf will be laid to rest in his ancestral home in Mymensingh after official procedures in Dhaka, said Tawhid.
JusticeRouf played role as the 5th CEC after the fall of HM Ershad regime in the 1990s.
Following the formation of Bangladesh's first caretaker government, headed by Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, Justice Rouf was appointed as the CEC.
For the first time during the interim government's tenure, Bangladesh had a three-member Election Commission (EC). Justice Rouf joined as the CEC the day after Justice Sultan Hossain Khan’s resignation.
Under Justice Rouf ’s leadership, the 5th parliamentary elections were held on February 27, 1991, with BNP and Awami League 140 and 88 securing seats respectively.
The Rouf Commission, during the caretaker government’s tenure, made significant reforms to the electoral law and issued the Election Officer (Special Provision) Ordinance.
On April 18, 1995, Justice AbdurRouf resigned from the position of CEC and returned to his position as an HC judge.
He was appointed as a judge of the Appellate Division in June 1995 and retired on February 1, 1999.
After retirement, he served as Shariah adviser for Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company Ltd and Prime Islamic Life Insurance Company.
He also served as the central president of the national children and youth organisation, ‘Phulkuri Ashar.'
